  • The Polar Bear Expedition Americas invasion of Russia 1919

    Author...James Carl Nelson

Polar Bear Expedition is the forgotten story of the 339 Infantry Regiment sent to Russia at the end of WW1 along with other nations ,to protect the rail system and anti revolution

(1917) governments.......Over 200 Dough Boys paid the price and were forgotten and buried in Russia until decades later before being returned to US soil.

Great story of another forgotten war and army....

Part of a larger Allied Intervention . The main railway protection work was in Siberia. The North Russia Expedition which involved British, Canadian and French forces as well as American and had the Polar Bear flash was mainly involved in keeping hold of Murmansk. British tanks were involved, one of which remained on display in Murmansk and IIRC has now been restored

The whole thing was sometimes referred to as Winston's Crusade as Churchill was a moving force behind it.

The story has been told periodically:

Intervention at Archangel, Leonid Strakhovsky, 1944
      The Ignorant Armies, E.M. Halliday 1958, 1960 & 1990
Quartered in Hell: American North Russian Expeditionary Force, Dennis Gordon, 1982
Russian Sideshow: America's Undeclared War, Robert Willet, 2003

The big question is whether Nelson brings in new Soviet or American/British sources, or is his book a reinterpretation of existing sources.
Leadership is the ability to rise above conventional wisdom.

Over a hundred dying of the Spanish Flu which broke out amongst American and Italian troops on the ship taking them to Russia. Indeed it has been alleged that it was brought to Russia by them, although I suspect that it would have reached there by other means in any case.

Indeed. Two Victoria Crosses were awarded to Australians while serving in the North Russia Relief Force: Cpl Arthur Percy Sullivan VC and Sgt Samuel George Pearse VC MM
