  • Author of Das Boot dies

A masterpiece of Nazi submarine warfare, the thrilling tale of a new captain on the cold Altantic Ocean, hunting transports and convoys in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse.

The author has died, at age 89.

    You gotta love that eye-patch.

    Very sorry to hear that.

Das Boot is a brilliant film - I think I must have watched 5 or six times!

Must say I liked his photo journalist work The U-boat War more than his novel.

That sucks. Das Boot is one of my favorite movies.
If you can't set a good example, be a glaring warning.

I read the book way back in '83, when I was on a long bus ride to Chicago, to go to the MEPS station when I signed up for the Navy. I was riveted by that book and read the whole thing before I got home. The book is so much better than the movie...the movie left a lot of stuff out. (Don't get me wrong, I did like the movie. I like to watch it in the original German.Makes it seem so realistic!)

RIP Another piece of history is committed to the ages.......

              I really fits him.
              Buccaneer comes to mind.

I've only seen the film so far, but I think it would be fitting to go out and read the book now...
