  • Looking for a book on WW 2 Pacific Theatre

    Hi,

just thought about reading someting about the pacific theatre. Does anybody have recommendations? I would like to have something that covers the entire war in this theatre, maybe with emphasis on the land campaign.

    Cheers

Thanks so far. The rising sun book was a little bit too specific in scope, but "War in the Pacific" looks really nice. Thanks for you suggestions.

If you can find it, Airwar by Edward Jablonski covers the PTO quite well. Although its focus is the air war, it covers the Naval and Amphibious operations quite well. Since it covers the whole air war of WWII from the rise of the Luftwaffe to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it is a great general WWII reference as well.

Airwar consists four volumes in 2-4 books, depending on the publication.

By Jerome Hagen, can't remember the title for certain, but think it is "World War Two - Pacific Theater", it is a two volume set.

I got one for you. Try "Victory at Sea" by James Dunnigan and Albert Nofi. I own all the books by both authors I can find. LOTS of information, and you can skip around reading.

We have a very good bookshop in Sydney that covers all war I think but specializes in the Pacific to a good degree. You can look through their catalogue on line and maybe spot a few titles on the Pacific campaigns. They give a description of each book and so on.

"MacArthur and Defeat in the Phillipines" by Richard Connaughton is currently on my shelf waiting to be read. Looks interesting and does not appear to pull any punches in its criticism of MacArthur's handling of the campaign.

                              D-ploy,

If you wanted to read Air War (Pilots, Squadron, Air War History, etc) over South Pacific, then I recommended read these books:

Baa Baa Black Sheep: The True Story of the "Bad Boy" Hero of the Pacific Theatre and his famous Black Sheep Squadron
                              Author: Gregory "Pappy" Boyington

Fire in the Sky: The Air War In the South Pacific
                              Author: Eric M. Bergerud

The Jolly Rogers: The Story of Tom Blackbrun and Navy Fighting Squadron VF-17
                              Author: Tom Blackburn

                              Samurai!
Author Saburo Sakai with Martian Caidin

and there is alot books that you could find in Amazon.com.

                              Regards
