    Your requested combination of coverage of both West Africa (Mali and Ghana) and Ethiopia might be a bit difficult to find in one book.

    My knee jerk reflex would be to recommend one of Martin Meredith's books for optimum result. Which one depends on your focus in history: last 50 years (State of Africa) or last 5,000 years (Fortunes of Africa)
