Recently finished, John Follain's "Jackal: The Complete Story of the Legendary Terrorist, Carlos the Jackal" and found it to be interesting and informative. The author's bibliography lists three pages of French and Foreign Official and Other Documents which supplemented with interviews of officials and players. His books appears to cover most of the secondary works and memoirs. A well done effort that gives insight to behind the headlines that followed Carlos the Jackal.

Always wanted to read that myself.

                  The search begins.

I found it by accident in some Finnish used books shop, no idea what it was but bought it, as I recall, since it was the only one in English.

                        • The Gulag Archipelago is on iTunes as an e-book for $7.99. Not sure whether or not it's abridged though. That seems awful cheap considering the length of the book.

                            Probably Vol 1.

                              • I remember when it first came out in English a volume at a time. I read it by the time I got to the end of volume 2 the misery was so relentless I felt depressed and very nearly didn't get volume 3.

BTW did you know its about 5% more pages in the German translation than the English one?. Does this say some thing about the relative conciseness of English over German?
