I found a copy of Hasting's "Overlord" on my shelf (forgot I had it) and am putting it in the reading line up. I seem to recall hearing negative things about his views and this book in particular. Amazon reviews are favorable but I am sure I remember doubts cast on this work. Does anyone know how this book is viewed as a historical work?

I read it and found it to be one of the more balanced books on the topic. It does a very good job telling the story from several points of view including the Germans. I would recommend it.

Biggest criticism I've seen is his belief that the German army was inherently better than the allies. The point is arguable, but the underpinning comes from Dupuy's work on the Italian Campaign where the data is dubious.
