  • ARMA2-Addons

We finally sparked some interest beyond the usual trio

Having talked to Nokturnal trying to help me figuring out what's wrong with my ACE addon (or with me) I came to realize I don't know half of what's out there, when I played OFP I was still in school so I had time to know the community and its perks inside and out, these days I don't have so much time, I'm seldom at home and the different sites update so fast it's hard to keep track of what's a good addon/mod and what's... amateur....

I'm sure many people here can relate.

So this thread is to list what you think are good addons, what you play with or could recommend, what are important base addons (ACE? CAA1?) if you have a specific "set" for playing in an "atmosphere" (for example playing a modern Afghanistan/Iraq themed game- what Island, friendly units, opfor, etc.)

If you found a good new addon, editing tips, well you get the idea...

    Pour it here!

Waiting for operation Northstar and for another talented modder to put together an Afghan campaign for me and my Canadian bretheren. Next stop, Khandahar.

        -Units-
        Infantry

ADF SAS - C'mon, you didn't expect me to post another nation's army first did you? This mod adds the Australian SAS units.
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=7531

US Army '09 - Title pretty much sums it up. Just check the pics for quality as there are various US based units out there you may prefer.
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=7165

Desert Mercs & Black Ops - Contains an assortment of units including winter spec ops, navy seals, desert special forces, pilots and insurgents.
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=6471

SAS pack - This pack includes SAS units (in desert and woodland camo), SBS and also SFSG. The author also created an ACE reliant mod for those who want to use the ACE weapons with the units.
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=9031

GRU Spetsnaz - Features 5 groups of Spetsnaz units, each with different camo. Note that this mod also contains a second option of using the units alongside Vilas' weapon pack. (featuring alot more eastern weapons)
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=9396

Extra Units/Vehicles - Adds alot of extra units to each side, no new nation just adding on to existing USMC/CDF/Cheadki etc...
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=6421

I won't bother posting the links, but incase people are curious here are a few nation based units you can find:
        African
        British (many various unit types)
        Chinese
        Danish
        Dutch/Netherlands
        France
        German
        Irish
        Italian
        Polish
        Norwegian
        Spanish
        Swiss
        Turkish
        US (many, many various types)
Star Wars (yes, Star Wars..It's a nation isn't it?)

        Tracked Vehicles

BMD-1&2 packs - Two separate addons, but created by the same folk so i thought i'd put them together in one. Various camo types and they've also got an interesting feature which allows the driver to raise/lower suspension.
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=8704
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=9767

2S6M1 Tunguska - Improved version of the current Tunguska, adding SAM capabilities (able to target out to 10km!)
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=8130

Challenger 2 - Not much to say really, nicely made addon and it's good to see the Brits getting some heavy armour.
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=7748

Vilas' Soviet Vehicle Pack - Adds T55, T62, T64, some T80s and a few more.
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=8784

There are a couple other tracked vehicles, but most were made redundant by better quality ACE versions that come with the ACEX mod.

        Wheeled Vehicles

I'm not sure if many are worth mentioning, alot seem to be made for fun rather than to add to the Arma universe of military vehicles. (Skylines, 350z, Ladas, Golfs etc..)
But one i did like was the SCUD (with mobile launcher) which allows you to send a missile from one side of an island to the other, complete with devastating explosion and radiation effects following.
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=8495

Sadly nobody has made (or i haven't found) a mission using that mod..

        Sea/Navy units

Submarine Pack - I've not tested this but if you do, keep in mind it's still in beta so not everything will work perfectly. But it does have working torpedoes so it's a start. (but if you want naval combat, there are numerous sub/navy games out there)
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=8360

Fast Sea Frame - Based on a combat ship under development by the US Navy. Also still in beta.
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=9765

Kuznetsov CV - Basically just a aircraft carrier for the Russian side. Once again, still in beta. I've also just realised these all are made by the one person...No wonder they're all still in beta, he's got too much on his plate.
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=8254

        Planes/Choppers

A-10 Camo Pack - Allows you to choose between 9 different camo schemes.
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=6341

F-16 Fighting Falcon - Adds the F-16 to your arsenal, with automatic flare countermeasures (note, this doesn't make it invincible..)
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=5900

The FEW - A pack containing various WWII planes (spitfire, hurricane, JU-87). I'm not sure but this might also be included in the 31st Normandy Mod. (WWII Mod, see end of post)
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=9261

RAF Chinook - Adds the Chinook to your chopper choices, with it's own "real life" samples of sounds and a useable ramp.
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=6232

Little Birds - Ported over from Arma1, unfortunately this mod gets ignored lately as ACE also have their own little bird choppers. Still a good mod if you want the choppers without ACE.
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=5952

        -Weapons-
***To be continued another night...This list took longer than i thought.
        In the meantime, check here:
        http://www.armaholic.com/list.php?c=a2_addons_weapon

        -Game Tweaks-
        Audio
As Mackie stated in the other ArmA thread, it's probably best to go here and select your own sound mod - It really depends on your own tastes.
        http://www.armaholic.com/list.php?c=a2_addon_sound
However, keep in mind that you can create your own sound mod folder by combining your favourite sounds from each sound mod. (they're usually split up into things such as vehicle sound, weapon sound, environment sounds etc..)

Graphics/Visual - Note that some of these may not appeal to all players, take a look at the provided vids/screens to decide if it's for you.
WarFX - I'll admit this is more for 'wow factor' rather than adding realism/immersion - But have a look at the vids and decide yourself.
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=8182

LandTex - Makes the ground textures alot more pleasant to look at when flying (or just high up). I believe it's only for Chernarus though.
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=6050

JTD Fire & Smoke - Again this could be considered more for show rather than realism, but personally i found it to be a great addition to my "default" mods.
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=6152

JTD Clear Horizon - This mod replaces the painted on mountain look with a clearer horizon.
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=9202

JTD Fat Rain - Yep JTD again, noticing a pattern?...This team is very good when it comes to visual tweaks. As it says in the title, this mod will make rain "fatter" and more visible.
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=9353

JTD Flies - Well atleast this time it's slightly realistic . This mod will add flies to dead bodies after a couple of minutes, and increases in density after longer periods. You might actually be able to play CSI with this mod!
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=9520

PaleGUI - This mod removes the green user interface and replaces it with a pale colour. Obviously this will appeal to only certain people
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=8305

        -Islands-
Razoreniya - A small (5x5km i believe) jungle island, it's very dense in some areas so FPS may become an issue. Looks great though.
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=9810

Panthera - 10x10km island though it certainly feels bigger. There is a desert section, but the majority of the island is covered in mountains and forests.
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=7467

Quesh-Kibrul - So far the only decent attempt at making a desert map. 3 islands, connected by road. Quite a few built up areas for QCB too.
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=8698

Everon - For the old A1 fans, (well everyone else too) a remake of the old Everon map.
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=7913

Celle - A rather big island, 100x100km. Much flatter than other islands, but a large number of towns (35). The author also states "Steelbeasts fans are going to love this one".
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=9448

Isla Duala - An African style island, well rather two chunks of the island separated to creat a bit of "north vs south" conflict possibilities for mission makers. (they also released two separate armies for the island, search armaholic for Molation and Afrene units if you want them)
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=9150

Namalsk - The first island i found and still one of my favourites. Snow capped mountains, very detailed towns. The only drawback is the airstrip is still just grass, but the author is still working on it. (though claims the airstrip isn't one of his concerns )
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=7781
You might also need the patch (only 11mb)
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=8042

Thirsk - A (fictional) Finland setting, set on a 5x5km island. This mod actually comes with two islands, one standard and one in the winter season. It also includes a couple of extra weather types (snowing/snow storm) to be used when creating missions.
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=9861

        -Modules-

CBA - Alot of mods/missions require this mod to run, it's a tool for the addon and mission designers. To be perfectly honest, i'm not entirely sure what it does, but it's widely used so you'll end up getting it eventually.
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=6231

ACE - I'm sure everyone has heard about this by now so i won't bother explaining it.
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=8602

ACEX - This mod contains all the new units/weapons the ACE team have provided, and of course it requires ACE to run.
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=8603

PLA - Adds various units for the Chinese army, new weapons/vehicles etc.. There is an ACE dependant version too.
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=8906

31st Normandy Mod - This mod essentially tries to bring the WWII world to Arma2. They've not gone for realism, so you will see a few vehicles or units that didn't see battle, or were still in the design stage.
With many contributors and a hell of alot of content, it's shaping up to be a great mod. They've even thrown in an island roughly 150x150km for us to play on.
Currently still in beta, with 3 patches so far, but hopefully once it's done we can see some great missions making use of it.
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=9729
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=9755 - Patch 1
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=9824 - Patch 2
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=9873 - Patch 3

CAA1 Project - Essentially this module makes Arma1 addons (old islands, units etc..) work in Arma2. I've not tried to do alot with it, so i'm not sure of the limitations but it's worth a look for those who want to play with the old Arma1 addons.
        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=7006

        --------------------------------------------------------

I'd better end it here, there are plenty other mods for all these categories. Believe it or not, this is only a small selection of what's available.
A quick trip to armaholic's download section (and maybe sorting to view by 'most hits' to find the more popular/quality mods) will result in even more great content to keep you occupied.
        http://www.armaholic.com/list.php?c=arma2_addons

Also, please keep in mind i may of missed a few instances where one of these mods requires another mod to work - However this will be stated on the armaholic page, so just make sure to take a look when downloading.

Thanks for getting the ball rolling-

          31st Normandy-
I played around with it for a while, it certainly is row, some of its addons are amazing (mainly those of "the few") some are...nice tries...I didn't like the map much, at first I was excited since it was suppose to be Normandy and it looked very promising, but once "in it" you realize everything looks the same and it all a HUGE plain without so much as small hills and ravines.

I wonder how Invasion1944 are doing?
This was my ultimate favorite mod for OFP, I spent countless hours on it (and I owe many of my low grades for it), made some fantastic missions with it.

As for weapons addons- I never got the grips of how to use them, I mean if it comes complete with a unit- fine, but if it's just the weapon how do I use it?
(In a way that I don't have to pick it from an ammo box but my player and the rest of my unit start with it)

Good idea for a thread Golani.

Did you get your ACE issues sorted out? I tried the 3 Para soldiers and they worked fine for me. If you don't want to use SIX Updater there is another (easier) one called Yoma Addon Synch.

For those who don't want to use ACE for any reason (for me, their armour system is incompatible with other tank addons that don't make use of their system) you should look at GL3 and MMA.

            GL4

            http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=92269

Good mod that adds AI enhancements and effects, not a big download.

            Mando Missile ArmA

            http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=89912

Great addon that adds more realistic systems for aircraft like CCIP bombing, flares, RWR etc. and makes the AA launchers and Javelin more realistic. The only issue is that I don't know how to bind keys for the flares and missiles to my Joystick. I also find air combat really difficult.

Not sorted out yet (still not home) I think I'll just re-install and hope for best.

That reminds me- another issue I have with ACE is that I can't seem to be able to get the FLIR working.

Nice addition Mackie, i had forgotten about Mando Missile. GL4 is great too but doesn't it have it's own special FX? The only reason i've not played around with that much is because i'm too addicted to the WarFX mod.
But the AI improvements are deffinately worth a look.

I'd have to agree, it's a bit underwhelming especially considering how hyped it was. But it's still a huge mod with alot of content which will (hopefully) be improved over time. I'm just glad to be able to play with some WWII equipment without having to download the old (though better quality) A1 mods.
As you said some of the units seem to be leagues ahead of the others in terms of quality, which i'd say is because they've got multiple addon makers (and some authors simply give them permission to include their addon such as "the few") so perhaps not every maker is as skilled as the last.
I also get the impression it was released earlier than intended due to all the talk about it and people wanting to play something/anything WWII related.

I've been watching this one too, i would of posted it but they've not released anything yet.
They've got a few pics of their progress posted within the thread, but if you don't want to search through there just take a look at their site:
                http://invasion1944.info/

Personally i think this will be a better WWII mod, but i guess only time will tell.

I'm not entirely sure how to add a weapon to a unit either - I believe this is "easily" done for those who know their way around editing A2, something to do with adding it to an .init script?
We can play missions using the new weapons if a mission designer has done this, but as you say the only way for us to play around with them ourselves are to use the ammo boxes..
There are a few weapon packs that have replacement mods, such as RH's AK pack or RH's M4 pack..Or RH's pistol pack. Sadly, the replacement mod doesn't seem to include the brilliant sounds Robert Hammer used, but if you want a nicer looking set of default weapons, these packs come in handy.
(I'll update the weapon section of my earlier post and include the replacement links)

The wiki page on keybinding http://ace.wikkii.com/wiki/Keybindings_for_ACE2 - Says it's activated by hitting "T", or "Shift+T" to change to black.
But i'm not entirely sure as i've not actually tried myself. (i'm waiting for Arrowhead so i can see a much better quality FLIR)

It seems they limited the use to only tank gunners I tried all the air units that came with ACE but no luck.
I only tested the one tank, the M1A1 Tusk, so i'm not sure on the others but it worked here, just hit T (yeah it still brings up the team switch..why didn't they pick another letter?..) and adjust the sensitivity with page up/down.

                    Here's a couple of pics.

Yep that's what i keep telling everyone. Did ya get it working? I still think it'll be much better in OA.

It appears i cannot edit my older post containing all the other addons, so this post will be for weapons and later on in the week i might compose a list of enjoyable missions.
Thing about missions is, it depends on what the player likes doing. Many of my favourite missions might not be of any interest to others...

                        -Weapons-

Robert Hammer's Weapon Packs - These first few mods are mostly modifciations of weapons that already exist in the game, but RH has remodelled them and also given them new sounds. In my opinion these weapons are of much better quality than the original BIS models/sounds.

RH M4/M16 pack - This pack contains new models/sounds for the M4 & M16 family and also a couple of machine guns i believe. Someone has also created a replacement mod which will replace all the standard weapons with these mdoels - Sadly the creator of the replacement mod hasn't included the sounds from RH, but it's on the 'to do' list for the next release.

                        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=8084 - Replacement mod

RH AK pack - Again, much better quality models and the sounds in this pack are just oustanding. Another person has also made a replacement mod for this, but once again the sounds are not included.

                        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=9044 - Replacement mod

RH pistol pack - This time, RH focuses on pistols and small arms (uzi, tec9 and many pistol variations) and, once again there is a replacement mod. But considering there are very few pistols in A2, it only replaces 3 pistols.

                        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=7687 - Replacement mod

RH Hk416 - Final one from RH, the quality is still here and he's also included the CTAR-21.
                        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=8573

MOD FFAA Weapons - This contains a number of new weapons, many of which don't seem to be created by any other modders either. I'm not too sure on the quality, if memory serves they weren't exactly RH quality, but i believe this was ported from A1 so maybe some textures just don't look as sharp and flashy. Still worth a look for the variety.

Cheytac - Adds the Cheytac Intervention M200 bolt action sniper to the game. One silenced, one...loud . The author has also created units that can be placed in the editor pre-loaded with the cheytac. Only dissapointing factor is the colour, which would stand out anywhere but the desert.

UKF Weapons Pack - There are two packs here, the first one was ported straight from A1 and has been labelled "bugged" but contains many more weapons:
                        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=7118
The other has been improved, with SUSAT optical sights included, and a few weapons removed. But a 'must have' for anyone who enjoys playing as the UK forces.
                        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=7718

Galil - This one is for you Golani Unfortunately this is just another simple port from A1, as a result the quality isn't perfect, but it's much better than the pics will lead you to believe. As you can see the modder has his settings turned way down in those few pics. If memory serves, it's got a nice sound.
                        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=5975

FAMAS pack - Contains different variations for both the F1 and G2 versions of the rifle. Funnily enough, RH actually helped with the sounds here.
                        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=8867

Australians At War weapon pack - Another heap of new weapons added, as you can see from the pic, mostly variations of the AuSteyr (or F88) but also a few MG/AT weapons included. They have enabled the user to deploy/hide the handgrips and bipods of the F88 and LMGs, however for the other fancy addition, tactical flashlights, you will need to be running it with the ACE core mod.
                        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=9355
                        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=9356 - No ACE
While it doesn't require ACE, it does require the INKO disposable AT launcher mod which allows a spent tube such as the M136 to be dropped instead of slung over the shoulder again.

Steyr pack - For those who don't want the whole AAW pack, this contains 4 variations of the Steyr. (Note, this is not in any way associated with the AAW weapon pack and is infact the original Steyr)
                        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=7548

Vilas' Russian and East Europe pack - Way too many weapons to list, but it seems to also contain many older weapons that no longer see service. Vilas has developed his own 'night vision scopes' for certain weapons, just make sure not to use them during the day...
                        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=9218

Swiss Army weapons - There are some 50+ weapons available here, from pistols to AT launchers.
                        http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=8894

Once again, this is just the tip of the iceberg. There are many other various weapons such as the G3, FN Fal, SMG packs, additional pistols etc.
I'll leave the rest of the searching up to you.

But before i end this post..
One excellent way to test all these weapons is with this mission:
                        http://armaholic.com/page.php?id=6504
It's a moveable target range placed on the Utes airstrip. You can select any weapon within the game, including new mods and those you haven't unlocked in the armory yet.
The targets consist of 1 living soldier, one metal target as is standard, a black board and one of the mock (wooden?) tanks used for AT practice. You move the targets 50m at a time, back or forth and can take them out to about 1km (maybe further).

It's a great way to get used to the distances your weapons are capable of firing out to, and also comes with a feature that lets you switch on/off a bullet tracking cam (also adjust speed of the cam). Not to mention it saves a hell of alot of time by not having to go from crate to crate switching weapons.
"My God, I wish we had the 9th Australian Division with us this morning."

I'm putting this in my "to try" folder

Everytime i get a new set of weapons (if it's more than just one or two) i'll try them out with this mission. One day i plan to load all my weapon mods and play this mission just to see how many different weapons are in the list .

A new mod has been produced by the ShackTac Fireteam (a well known group who play online together) which enables the player to see where everyone in his squad is in relation to himself, up to 45m.
The pics on the d/l page would do a better job explaining it than i can. It seems to be made primarily for MP but i've already had a go with the AI and it's still useful as a quick way to check if they're in formation, or where they are when the bullets start flying. Plus it just looks fancy.

Sure beats what I used to do until you brought this along-
Just place random enemies without ammo and try to shoot them before they flee out of sight...

                              how about this one:
After years of works, we proudly presents a BETA release of SOME addons of the Campaña de Malvinas Mod. We decided to release these addons separated for now, until we finish the mod, for public test.
This beta include the following addons:
                              - MLV Weapons - Light & personal Weapons
                              - MLV Units - Infantry Units
                              - MLV Support - Heavy and support weapons
                              - MLV Wheels - Wheeled vehicles
                              - MLV Objects - Objects used in the Island and other stuff
                              - MLV PtoArgentino - First Map of the mod Puerto Argentino/Port Stanely zone
                              - MLV Extras - Icon, XML for editors, pdf. with explanation about everything (only in spanish, sorry) etc.
                              - MLV Missions - Some basic multiplayer/singleplayer missions for testing the addons
Anyone heard of it or tried it out?
