  • Star Trek Online

For Valentines Day I bought my wife a new laptop.

For Valentines Day my wife bought me a copy of Star Trek Online and a four month subscription.

Wonder who loves the other more.....heh.

So far, of coures, I have only been able to play for a few hours, but I can't help but be impressed. As a Federation player you begin the game in the middle of a battle with the Borg. The bridge crew is killed, and suddenly as the ranking officer on board, you find yourself in command.

The game switches back from ship board or ground based operations to ship to ship battles in space, and of course the early missions are designed to teach you the mechanics of the game. But after my experiences with Warhammer Online I can see the potential for future interactions with other players. Future battles against foes such as the Klingons, Romulans, the Dominion, or the Borg when going up against live players must be intense.

So, is anyone else playing this? If so, I would be interested in knowing what you think of the game.

I did play in the Beta. Did not buy it...

The space part is nicely done, a bit slow in the leveling departement though, it takes forever and a day to get the 10 levels needed to buy a new ship. My main problem was the ground missions. They are long empty buildings with clusters of enemies thrown in and something to reach at the very end of the always linear path you have to take.

I think you'll have fun for the most part of your four month (depending on how often you game) but I dont see you buying more months unless you have very different views on what is fun than me or are a big star trek buff.

      Thanks Kimi.

I always have been a big Star Trek fan, so from that perspective I do enjoy the small aspects of the game such as meeting the great-grandson of Hykaru Sulu or the daughter of Tom Paris. But I already see your point about the linier aspect of the game.

I will stick with it for a bit. Last night I did have a lot of fun fighting the Klingons in deep space battles. Being able to build a taskforce of federation ships and invading a system was kind of cool.

      Live long and prosper.

For anyone who may be considering purchasing this game, I have been playing it for a few days now, and it is quite enjoyable.

For the true Star Trek fan such as myself, the thing is a scream. It picks up the time line from the original universe before Spock loused everything up, and makes great use of the story lines established over the course of Star Trek television and movie history. It has all the sounds associated with the series, and many of the characters or their offspring can be found running around the cosmos.

The ship progression system is kind of standard fare for an MMO game, and as yet there is no real PvP play, although that is in the works. But you can spend your game time blasting Klingon or Federation ships, chasing down members of the Orion Syndicate, fighting the Gorn in hand to hand combat, or scanning for materials for your ship and crew.

The bottom line is that, even though some of the missions can be linier, as Kimi said, it is fun. But especially for Star Trek fans.

Yeah I'm playing it. I played the Beta, and found it enjoyable, to the extent I coughed up for a Lifetime sub. There are some appalling missions though The walk/fly about and scan stuff ones.

However there's some great ones. I'm no fan of Star trek. In fact I think anything pre-Enterprise (the Series) as being ghastly. Even so there's a few items that I've spotted. The Guardian of Forever and the Doomsday Device (the ice cream cone of doom) make appearance's. As does the original Enterprise (yes you meet Kirk)

As a life-long Star Trek fan, I really enjoy those aspects of the game. I did the Guardian of Forever mission and thought it was great fun. The Doomsday Ice Cream Cone of Doom Machine mission was OK, but again fun because of the ties to the original series.

I also like what they did with Sela, who appeared in episodes of Star Trek The Next Generation, making her the leader of the Romulan empire. And the Tom Paris offspring as some form of religious icon for the Klingon empire is kind of cool as well. I also flew out to Deep Space Nine, just to see the place. I was disapointed that Quark wasn't there, only his bar. But then, as stated, I am a fan. While there I did buy a bottle of Picard wine. Heh.

Spock's voice was in the Guardian mission, but I have yet to meet Kirk. What mission is that?

Agreed, some of the missions are quite linier and can tend to drag, but if you want to get advancement points, you have to do them.

Quark's is there, just you have to be able to find it.
The guardian of forever is hte one where you technically meet kirk (although he might show up in a later one).
Apparently Q is making an appearance in the high level stuff.
That Paris lass is bloody useless, She keeps getting kidnapped!

Now I'm off to work on my Tribble breading program

Oh and the Terran Federation* (Those alternate universe types) shows up, as does the Crystalline entity.

*And they're damn hard, Even at commander level I was just about able to take out a Runabout, and was having trouble with Miranda's

I'm playing, made Rear Admiral about ten days ago, I played the Open Beta and was in on the Headstart.

                  Let's fleet up!

I'd like to develop my Klingon character too.

Well if we can get 5, we can go get murdered in that new Task force mission...

I made RA on Monday, and have been getting some Escort time in before they nerf them. I know where I can lay my hands on another two bodies. Who should be getting close to RA by now.

This morning I arrived at the Fleet FARP in Gamma Orionis. I'm scared to warp to sector, as I suspect I'll get jumped on by a Borg fleet.

I'm only in a little Squishy Escort!

I know how you feel, and I'm in a Cruiser. It wasn't that bad after the first time I was chased by a Borg Cube (I was looking at him and he was looking at ME and it was brown trousers time).

We should shoot some stuff together.
