Hey guys I need some advice in looking for a new game. As a kid I thoroughly enjoyed Escape Velocity Override. Escape Velocity Nova wasn't bad but I wish they went further with it and its unclear if they are ever going to continue the series. What attracts me to the game is the openness of being able to do what you want, exploring, the action, and rpg element of working your way up from a tiny shuttle to a powerful capital ship.

I tired the trial for EVE a while ago but it didn't really appeal to me. The lack of direct control of the ship as well as the ability to lose many months of work easily doesn't appeal to me. I just stumbled on Freelancer and it looks really good, although as I understand it you need some mods (which there seems to be an abundance of) to be able to fly capital ships.

I took a look at vendetta online but it looks as though you can only fly fighters. So can you guys give me any suggestions?

Freelancer is pretty good.It has some amazing space environment graffics. It gets kind of repetitive though. There is a strong mod community.

You might want to check out X3: Terran Conflict. It currently reigns supreme for the single player space experience (check out this thread and this thread for more). The only caveat I have is that it is a very tough and unforgiving game, probably the toughest I have ever played. With that in mind, it says something that I keep returning to it despite being frustrated time and again!

      You can learn more here.

Here's one of the many excellent fan films showing off the game's graphics and combat:

        Just a follow up:

Steam has the game for $20:

        http://store.steampowered.com/app/2820/

Even though the game is a bit old (2008) and Egosoft is starting to move towards their new space sim series, they are still releasing patches/new content:

We'd like to let all X-Fans know that Update 2.6 is coming very soon. An important part of that Update is the introduction of STEAM achievements for X3: Terran Conflict. In order to ensure their smooth introduction, the achievements may become visible in Steam prior to the release of the Update in order to facilitate final testing of the achievement system.

It is important to note that the achievements are not unlockable with the current version of the game.

Also we'd like to inform owners of the DVD version of X3: Terran Conflict that they will soon be able to register their existing key with STEAM to be able to download X3: Terran Conflict and start enjoying STEAM achievements once 2.6 is released.

We hope you enjoy Update 2.6 when it arrives!

@ Wargamer Scott - is there a boxed version you can get? Why have I not heard of this game. It looks great.

I know you can get a boxed copy through Amazon.com if you want to do that (currently $10). What is more, Egosoft is planning on releasing a "super box" finale for the series, which seems to be pretty ambitious:

            Hello X-Space-pilots!

As you may have noticed EGOSOFT is planning to release a Superbox containing all the X-series titles along with lots of content made by fans of the series. Before I start listing all the content we'd like to see in this box, let me describe the purpose of the box and why we thought it was a good idea to publish it.

First of all I should explain that "Superbox" is more of a working title for this unofficial project than a fixed name. We haven't decided yet what name we will give it; as soon as we have made a decision you will be the first to know!

As you probably know, the 10-year story of the X-series came to a conclusion with X3: Terran Conflict. Over the years many fans of the series have come to these forums and many are still here in the community. They are sure to remember the humble beginnings of this story with Kyle William Brennan and his ship, the X-perimental. In X-Beyond the Frontier he lost contact with Earth as a result of a terrible accident involving his jumpdrive and had to fight against massive threats. In X-Tension he recovered a lost prototype ship belonging to the Paranid. In X2: The Threat and X3: Reunion his son, Julian Brennan, followed his footsteps and fought against more dangerous threats than his father could have ever done. In doing so he rescued millions of people in Omicron Lyrae and even made it possible to reconnect the X-Universe with the Sol system. In X3: Terran Conflict you had to maintain peace while the Kha'ak and the Xenon, the descendants of the Terraformers, continued to threaten not only the people of the X-Universe, but also the humans of the Sol system and of course you! This was the only way to grant both sides a peaceful future together.

All the games mentioned above will be in this special box, that much is for sure! But the games of the X-series also motivated many people to create expansions, write scripts, fan-fiction and many other things. To make this superbox worthy of the name, we are calling upon our trusted community to make suggestions of possible fan-made content to go into the box. The potential variety of the content is huge, so don't be hesitant when making your suggestions. This box shouldn't just be something from EGOSOFT for fans, but by fans for fans. You wrote many useful guides, tutorials and HowTo's that we'd also like to add to the content of the superbox. Tell us what you want to see in this box and we'll do our best to add it.

To keep an overview of the collected content we've decided to separate this request into five threads. The content we want is so huge that it would be easy to lose track if we collected it all in one thread.

So, we are separating the subject areas into the following categories:

            * X-Universe

Here we are going to collect:

            Tutorials, Guides, Tips, Tricks, HowTo's
            Sector maps
Savegames (Follow this link for instructions)
            Screenshots (i.e. as loadscreens)
We will look through all of this content and decide which to put into the box. We ask you to always post a link to the content you want us to include so that we don't have to spend too much time searching for it.

Just thought I'd post the "Think" vid that gives an overview of the story, missions and the game (again, this is all actual in-game graphics):

                One more thing:

There is another game coming on the horizon. It isn't an open sandbox world like X3, but is more like a multiplayer Counter-Strike game. It is called Naumachia and will allow you to command everything from a single fighter, up to capital vessels. It sounds like it is going to be a lot of fun.

Here is a beta build video:

Okay, just keep a few things in mind:

                    1) X3 is not X-Wing or Wing Commander. You will not be just diving into combat and tearing the enemy apart. It will take many, many hours just to get enough money for a decent craft and weaponry. And, of course, it will take many more hours just to learn how to trade profitably so you make the money for the new ship/weapons. Take part A, add part B, and you realize that it will take many, many, many hours before you are in a position to purchase a fleet and your own factories/space stations.

                    2) People say that EvE has a steep learning curve. Well, in that case I would say X3 has a hostile learning curve. EvE is a walk in the park compared to the difficulty of X3. Part of the reason is that this game seems to enjoy withholding valuable information from the player, forcing you to learn by sheer trial and error and by frequent trips to the official forums.

                    3) Speaking of the official forums, you might as well go create an account over there now because you will be spending a lot of time asking questions.

                    4) Get PSCO1's Cockpit mod ASAP! Vanilla X3 is like EvE in that you sort of hover outside of your ship. This mod gives you a proper cockpit for most vessels. They look great, too:

                    5) This game will devour hundreds of hours, so say goodbye to your life. You know how some people like to play Silent Hunter in real time? Well, I know people who play this game in real time, even to the point of running the game for days at a time so their factories can run without interruption! Yes...X3 can be that addictive.

And one more fan vid :

I just found and re-installed my Freespace 2 cds.I forgot how good that game is.And,considering that the game is 11 years old,the graphics aren't that bad.
