TOY SOLDIER NEWS LETTER APRIL 2007
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Greetings Fellow Toy Soldier Collectors and Enthusiasts;
It's been a while since I sent out any information via Sarges Board. I hope everyones
    collecting experience is going well.

Theres so much out there in the toy soldier world to collect today, its almost
overwhelming. There are many plastic manufactures, and companies that produce metal
figures. It's hard to decide what one may really want in their collection.

But whats awesome about todays figures, is the fact that competition has made figure
manufacturers pay more attention to detail, both from a physical perspective and a
    historical perspective.

Some of my favorite figures are those of famous individuals who were connected to various
military campaigns and battles. Im my collection, I have figures such as a pewter figure
of Robert E Lee, that I bought when I visietd Lee's tomb at Washington Lee College in
Virginia and Nataniel Lyon, who was the first Union General killed in the American Civil
War at the Battle of Wilsons Creek Missouri. I picked up General Lyon when I participated
in the 130 anniversary reenactmen of this famous battle. Some other figures that I have
are; Rommel, Bull Halsey, Teddy Roosevelt, US Grant, Chief Black Hawk and Patton.

Some campaign figures and sets that I have relate to many time periods and battles from
ancient times to the present day. And more new figures and sets are coming out all the
    time.

    PAINTING FIGURES
    by Gene Stevens
    ---------------------------------------------------------------

If your new to toy soldier collecting, you may wonder what it takes to paint and detail
your figures. Well heres some things I've learned along the way, that could help you along
    the way too.

    * First and foremost, I've learned to be patient. Turning out a good figure take a little
while. Especially for those of us who are artistically challenged. Take your time,
consider your figure painting, an ongoing work in progress. If you plan to sell you
figures and perhaps time is important to sales. You might consider searching out a
painting service which will do your figures for you.

    * Do your research; One of the more important aspects of todays collecting activities, is
the historic accuracy of military figures. Theres tons of research material and books
available today, most of which is lavishly illustrated.

    * Dont be afraid to experiment; I used to say that I would never chop up a figure or alter
it signicantly. That all changed one day, when I did my first conversion. Theres many
things you can do from a creative stand point to make a figure very ointeresting and/or of
historic value, or one of a kind in it's class. You can channge heads, heat up plastic
figures and change their poses. Create a diorams using many of these techniques. So don't
be afraid to try something new.

    * Prime before painting; I found that a figure whether it's plastic or metal, just turns
out better when you give the figure a good coat of primer. The primer also makes your
piece kinda like a blank canvas to work from, on which you can correctly lay the colors
    from your pallet.

    HAPPY TOY SOLDIERING!
