  • Battlefield: Bad Company 2

To avoid spamming the Screenshots topic i decided to make a thread for this game.
Now other people can post screens and/or discuss the game here. Or the older Battlefield games too i guess, it still seems to use the same recipe for making a great game.

The pics from the screenshots thread:

Yes they are both pretty arcadey, health re-gen, invincible friendly AI, almost never ending supply of bullets etc.. However the most notable difference (to me anyway) is the lack of the "enemies keep coming until you advance" script which just turned CoD games into a reflex test and forced you to use the ol' spray n pray tactic.
I never really liked that about CoD, i guess after playing games like Arma my FPS pace has slowed down...

The story is also leagues ahead of MW2 in my eyes, making much more sense and just generally being more enjoyable to play through rather than feeling like a chore towards the end.
I wasn't a fan of how MW2 seemed to kill off characters for shock value every couple of levels. It made the story feel messy.
With BC2 they instead create characters (or rather use the same ones from BC1) and give you reason to want to keep them alive. Each has a unique personality, they all make jokes and poke fun at eachother, sometimes even dish out a cheeky reference to MW2, which are quite amusing.

    What's the destructible environment percentage?
It seems that pretty much every building or obstacle can be destroyed, aside from perhaps key structures for objectives and the sort.
An underbarrel grenade launcher (or just a grenade) does a nice job removing or widening a window an enemy is attacking from, allowing you to target them with ease (if they survived..). However firing an RPG or using a well placed c4 charge might remove an entire wall or make the building collapse. Some buildings which are properly made might withstand a bit more punishment, while a wooden shack could be levelled much easier.
It makes for some hectic battles when you run into a shack for cover but before you get inside it's been torn apart by an explosion and you are greeted with a hail of bullets.
Cover is never cover for long...

I've not got into the MP side of things, i know this is the strength of all Battlefield games - But going back to the reflex test comment, i don't think i'm designed for online play against real people these days.
That being said, it's still got a great SP campaign so it's worth a look if you like a good FPS. Unfortunately co-op isn't an option but if you can get together with some mates i'm sure a LAN against AI on one of the many maps and various modes, would be great fun.

Anyone else given this game a look yet?
    Opinions?

I'm picking it up this week... looking forward to it, but I'm in it for the multi-player.

    Thanks for the screenshots.
Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated... again...

No worries mate, if you've got a good team to work with you're sure to have alot of fun.
The destructible environments make for an ever changing battlefield, so even players who've seen the same level 50 times won't know where to hide because it could all be changed the next time. Makes it easy to replay without getting bored.

There is also Battlefield 1943 coming to PC this year - Another title that started life on the console but is being brought to the PC just as Bad Company 2.
We've also got Battlefield 3 coming eventually.

Seems like the franchise is being revived.

Now all we need is a new BF Vietnam and we're set. (lets just forget 2142...)

Scared me too, that's why i felt it necessary to destroy the building...Those crickets are dangerous. (or is cricket a term for the device i was using and i'm just slow? )

I've finished the SP now, still don't think i'll bother with the MP but i could see myself replaying the SP to have a bit more fun. Also to destroy alot more buildings...
The scenery is great, the more i played the more it looked like a variation of Crysis rather than just being average as most Battlefield games look.

One slight annoyance i had was the use of the XM8 as your default weapon (for you and your squad) - Even if you ditch it at the start as i did (for the awesome Russian AN-94) it's still seen in all the cut scenes and your men never seem to change their gun.
I'm happy to be corrected if i'm wrong, but my understanding was this gun never even passed the development stage...I know the game isn't meant to be overly realistic, but you'd think they could atleast get the equipment right?

I understand that it's just a funky looking weapon and it seems many games like throwing it in there just for fun (even Arma2 has it within the armory) but i've never before seen it used as the gun your unit was issued.

However, pointless complaint/rant aside it's still a great game with lots of enjoyable moments.

I think we're mixed up here.

Is the gun you're holding in the quoted pic. a very small handgun?

It awfully reminded me of "the Cricket" from "Men In Black"

Hahah didn't think of that - Yeah it does look similar, and would create a similar explosion too i'd say.
But nah, it was just the trigger for the c4....Would of been more interesting if it were the Cricket i think.

Looks like an epic game just from the screenies! What platforms is it for again?

Yep, not nearly as interesting as the Cricket is it? Maybe someone will create a mod for Arma2 allowing us to play with the M.I.B arsenal.

Well i guess it depends what you're more comfortable playing an FPS on. Some say it's easier on a controller, some say a controller will always be slower than mouse/keyboard - But in the end it's a pointless argument as you'll only be playing people who are on the same platform. (though i guess people can have a controller hooked up to a PC these days...)
As for the graphics i'm not sure if there is much of a difference, but if you've got a weak comp it may be better to get it on the Xbox as you won't have to worry about your capabilities.
In terms of gameplay they should be identical but as for online play, i've heard there are a few complaints about the server limitations for PC.

It turns out they weren't expecting such a massive response from the PC gamers, apparently it was "400% more activity than expected" which causes their servers to be full almost constantly, however i'm sure they are in the process of addressing this issue. My mates say they have had maintenance every night for the last few days.
I still haven't bothered with the online aspect so i wouldn't take my word for it - Perhaps take a look at their forums and look for complaints and then choose the other platform?

I've played every BF game ever made, even beta-tested most, and BC2 is, by far, the worst game ever produced.

First of all, they couldn't even get the MP system working right from jump! I KNEW it was going to be a problem in the beta!

Second, if you do not play with a well-coordinated squad using voice communication, don't even bother playing online - complete waste of time.

Third, there are people who have ranked-up to level 40 already, in about 2.5 weeks! This is complete insanity, IMHO. I also notice hacks being used, for example, there is a guy on the leaderboards with only 33 hours of playing time, and he has over 20,000 kills and about 300 deaths...yeah, right. It's just incredible what's already been happening.

Seriously...DICE completely screwed-up the franchise. I'm uninstalling it soon if today's update doesn't fix some crap...

The only was that people could get that amount of kills is most likely power leveling, one guy shoots another character time and time again.
