  • I have found THE MOST incompentant tactician in programmer history!

While browsing the overpriced used games market I came upon a copy of Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat for PS1. I have come across a level that demonstrates why wargames should only be made by WARGAMERS.

The basic rule of this game is that when ambushed you cannot take time to pre-position your troops on the battlefield. This part makes sense however when escorting a convoy your troops will be positioned in certain tactical areas. The basic rule of priority is Flank/Van/Rear.

In one level, however, this is not the case. Some idiotic game designer decided the ideal setup was to put all of your troops in the left rear. BTW, guess where the ambushes come from? You guessed it, the front right! The end result, the caravans bottle up your forces so that by the time you can get your troops around the wagons, the merchants have been slaughtered.

The proper disposition for my five unit force would have been one unit on vanguard and two units on each flank. That way, the nearest ones can react while the other move into position to assist.

Whoever designed this level is so tactically incompetent that I would not trust him in command of any game more complex than Chutes & Ladders. And even with C & L, I would give him an advisor, just to be sure.

Hey, don't blame the programmer, it's the scenario designer!!

And if it was properly deployed it wouldn't have been a challenge!

Besides, I hear that was a crappy game to begin with.

Moreover it was a PS1 game?

I am but a poor scholar, and cannot afford the newest systems of pixel slaughter. Maybe after PS3 catces on I will get PS2.

It was a PC game too I believe though.

I have nothing against PS1 playstation and its games, though i am skeptic of wargames in console(with exception of Daisenryaku series)~~~

Yeah, command interface is hard to have with d-pad. A mouse and keypad work so much better. I would say that realtime strategy suffers in console but turn-based remains respectable. Romance of the Three Kingdoms is a great one that's on console. Being turn based, you can think your way through the game instead of having to have quick thumbs.

Wow this is a blast from the past.

Is this the mission after protecting the village where you escort 3 wagons and get attacked by goblins in the woods at night?I think it is the second or third mission, depending on how you take them,in the game.

This is a tough game.I don't think i ever beat the whole thing.Have you got to the part where you have to fight your way through the siege into the Dwarven stronghold? The battles around and in it have to be some of the toughest in the game.

Yeah, that's the level I'm talking about.

Nope, never made it far in the game without cheating. Used a code that gave you all of the troops working for free. Still a pain in the ass because no matter how you cut it, you're always out numbered by A LOT. Even with cheating I found myself outnumbered by 2 to 1 and at times 3 to 1.

Finally traded the game in. The battles became mundane as the scenario designer, rather than thinking of new and unique challenges, simply resorted to throwing more and more troops into the mix. Next month I'm gonna try to get either Allied General or Romance of the Three Kingdoms. ROTK is also highly difficult, but the difficulty is in the depth and not the numbers. Your computer adversaries do acts of skullduggery including sabotage, buying off your officers, spreading gossip, spreading arson, and other unique and interesting stuff, much more detailed than launching banzai charges with overwhelming forces (although that can happen too ).

Oh you got rid of the game. You probably missed some of the best fights, some of which could be quite fun.

Well i used to play it alot.I formed the opinion that there were battles in it you were not supposed to win, which could lead to alot of frustration. There was also the fact that you may have to go through 3 or 4 really tough fights, then finally get to a place where you could hire new recruits..only to find out there were less than a dozen men to fill your ranks.I would have liked to have tried the PC version to have seen if there was a difference in some aspects of play.

I quit playing the game because i came to the realization, with the above mentioned shortage of recruits, that it was next to impossible to continue on due to having 3 and 4 man regiments fighting hundreds of enemies.Though i never tried any cheats.

I had that game for the PC.

I really enjoyed it but it was one tough game!

I usually won the battles but the cost in troops lost meant eventually your Army was down to nothing and to proceed a hopeless cause.

Wouldn't mind if a new up to date version with a bit easier Combat was brought out.

There was a sequel to the game,Dark Omen.In that one though the combat was almost too easy, though they did allow you to buy new troops and armor upgrades between battles as long as you had the money.

I wouldn't mind seeing these games remade myself, but i doubt if that will happen.

To only be able to bring my Grudgebringers into battle one more time against impossible odds!

Speaking of console wargames....Lord of the Rings Battle for Middle Earth 2 for 360 should be out soon. The guys over at IGN say that during their playtest the game ran smoothly and closely resembled the PC version in control schemes. Perhaps the curse it broken......?
