  • Rallying the Panzers

In pre mech wars throughout history, it would often happen that troops who suffered losses, whether on the attack or the defense, would break and head for the rear to escape the fighting. Often battles turned on such phenomenon.

And, too, one of the jobs of the officer corps was to rally the troops and lead them back to the fighting.

But how does breaking and rallying work in a mechanized battle (WWII to modern)? In 1973, Syrians who had had enough would sometimes abandon their tanks and walk home. In Kuwait, the Iraqis simply waited for the Americans to surrender to them.

Are there modern examples of rallying the troops? How does it work? How might it be modeled in a wargame?
