This is where the chosen reserve Zuge from the 2nd Kompanie will go. I will stay with these Zuges until I find it necessary to go out into the field. We will be in squares V and W 13-14.

Last few notes, I would like Hauptmann von Loewe and Hauptmann Muller to direct their respective Zuges in the quest to obtain the enemy. Also, all commanders of each Zuge and Kompanie are left to make decisions based on their discretion but keeping in mind my previously released mission/goal for the unit. I do not want to have to reprimand ANYONE that would violate those orders.

I hope that these orders meet your standards gentlemen! Contact me if there are any questions or concerns ASAP! Thank you and good night!

Orders heard and understood, Mein Major! We shall be ready to exploit any weakness in the enemies defenses!

    • Hans Ludwig got back from the officers mess to his small group of men. looking around comically, he noticed that the gung-ho motorcycle detcahment he had been attached to was already zooming off into the distance, before he could consult with the Oberleutnant.

Hans turns to his men and shouts "Schnell! Schnell! get in your Panzers! bewegen sich schnell bewegen!" the scramble into the hatchways, not wanting their new battalion to be put to shame, and set off.

Hans crawls into his command panzer, and radios to the rest of his unit, he is in Sea Rose 1, his troops in Sea Rose 2-5. "Sea Rose 2,3 and 4 are to follow those blutig radioless motorcyles and find out where they are headed, Sea Rose 5, accompany Sea Rose 1 as we head for sector F-5 to scout for the Battalion, Seig Heil!"

Hans Sighed, today was going to be a long day ...

      • Note for the general fun that will doubtless follow: in 1935, only command tanks have transmitters as well as the receivers all tanks have.

        Signal flags all 'round, gents?

          • Helmut Gaussen smiled as he returned to his Kompanie from the command meeting.

Moving to stand before his men he shook his head slightly as he pulled a Sonder-Mischung from it's packet and light it with his father's old trench-lighter.

"All-right my birdies, it seems command has figured out how to use us after all."

He watched as the platoons became more alert focusing on the fact that they were actually going to be doing something. A fact that made Gaussen happy indeed as he knew only too well how dangerous bored soldiers could be.

"Saxwell, you're taking your Zuge and support's MG-34 and joining up with Hauptfeldwebel Erwin Heinz's Panzers, it seems the 'turtles' need some infantry to assist in the Village."

            Saxwell saluted smartly

            "Jawohl, bestimmt mein Hauptmann!"

As the First Platoon gathered their gear and began making for the Laagers the Hauptmann continued.

"Now ladies, this just leaves us sorry dogs to do what needs doing and doing right. We're most likely going to be performing a frontal assault on a prepared A.T. gun position. We'll most likely be going in together. With smoke if the gods favour us. Without if we must, but we're going in nonetheless!"

Gaussen paced in a small circle once before continuing:

"If there's anyone here who does not want to do this let them raise their hands now... No! Drop your hands you treacherous bas****s!" This as the entire remainder of the kompanie began raising their hands, their young faces painted in grins knowing what the Hauptmann would say.

Shaking his mead in mock dismay Gaussen continued.

" I swear I should have my head checked for volunteering to lead such a sorry mass of dogs as the likes of you. Ah well the gods **** on me! it was either this or the Kreigsmarine! Seriously though boys, we'll only have one MG-34 and one MG-13 along with our Mortar. So we need to work together and keep our heads... Let's be about our business"

            • "Only 2?" Hauptfeldwebel Heinz asked as Saxwell came up with his Zuge.

"You're lucky we could spare that many MGs."

"Oh, very well. Schmitz, you'll be redirecting, I want you to help the legs out with suppressing the OpFor dug in on the ridge. Ok, everyone Mount Up!"

Some of the infantry look at the Panzers with not-quite mock horror and more than a little bemusement as they see the crewmen untying pieces of lumber on the sides of their tanks, only to realize that those are footboards, and that they're going to be expected to RIDE on the panzers, with only grab loops to hold onto.

"Saxwell, you can lash your MGs to the back decks of the panzers, then get your men onboard. These are Ausf Bs, so they ride better than the older models."

"Lutz, start her up, let's get the Zuge moving."

Heinz then turns to his PCs and says: "I want a staggered column going down the road. We're keeping to a good clip, but watch for rough patches. I don't want to injure the infantry right off. Once in the town the infantry dismounts and escorts the panzers through, alert to any opfor that might be there. Schmitz and the infantry then go to the North with the MGs and suppress the opfor on the ridge....keep them from coming down. The rest of us will take up positions in the East part of the town and suppress the hill. We'll be advancing out of those positions when the regiment comes in, so be alert to my signal.

              • Hans tuned in his radio, he was being hailed by his Kompanie commander.

"Hans" Haptmann Von Loewe wheezed into the headset, "I don't think i can handle the pressures of handling troops anymore, my doctor says my heart is failing, if the Major is willing i would like you to replace me as the Haptmann, i hear the major has another hotshot to replace you". Hans stared at the radio wordlessly, this was the promotion he had been waiting for, as a lowly Zuge commander his Guderian-esque dreams of Blitzkrieg were fantasy, but as a Kompanie commander, well, that was where all the bigshots started. "Haptmann, i would be glad to take your place, if the Major allows".

he attempted to lean back in his seat, getting a nasty jolt when the Panzer rolled over a mole-hill. "Hmmm" he refelcted inwardly "Haptmann Ludwig .... thats if old Iron Fist lets me on".

the thought brought an ironic smile to his face.

Major von Ravenstein aka "old Iron Fist" here:

Although I'm disappointed that my strict rules have resulted in some ridicule on my account, I would like to promote Hauptfeldwebel Hans Ludwig to Haptmann and in command of 2. Kompanie as soon as possible. I hope that you don't suffer from a failing heart, aka loss of passion and dedication to our unit, as your predecessor.

In Hauptfeldwebel Hans Ludwig's place would be Sir [Scipio Nasica]. I hope you bring in hard work and dedication we always need for a unit such as this! Welcome!

not having a complete grasp on the Kompanies postition and actions, Hans radioed his panzers "Sea rose Two Three and Four, iv'e just been promoted so im leaving you fine fellows so instead of chasing those Motorcycles go and assist the Kuge securing the town and await orders from your new commandant, Sea Rose Five, assist them, Number one, we are going to the Haptmann's command post, where you will get your new commander and i will get my new Kompanie."

he then changed the bandwith so he was in direct contact with Von Loewe "Haptmann Von Loewe, can I please get a transcript of your orders to date?" Hans was going to need those orders if he was to succesfully take contol of the Kompanie.

Hans slipped a hand down his shirt and retireved one of his prized Havana cigars. "I know i shouldn't" he said to himself as he lit the end of the handrolled tobacco "but this is a special occasion."

FYI: There is only ONE other crewmember on a Panzer I. Commander and Driver was all there was.

                        • 0.2 1035 - 1130, 18 October 1935 (Zossen-Genshagen area)

1035 - Major von Ravenstein's aide returns at speed from the Genshagen direction, delivering his message.

1036 - Oberleutnant Sturm and the 2. Zug/Krzn. Aufklaerungskompanie arrive at speed and Major von Ravenstein begins his briefing.

1040 - Briefing concluded, Oberleutnant Sturm divides his command and his outriders set off at speed. Oblt. Heinz seems more preoccupied with rope, for reasons not immediately clear.

1042 - Oblt. Sturm and the 2. Zug/K. Auf. tear off toward the enemy positions on the hill, scouts peering through field glasses at the slope. Oblt. Ludwig returns to his unit and begins the briefing.

1045 - 3/2 Panzer-Zug's advance checked by command confusion - Leutnant Fritz assumes command as Oblt. Ludwig's vehicle moves to Kompanie Command at Abteilung HQ. 1/C Infanterie-Zug arrives at Oblt. Heinz's position, loading commences.

1046 - Having assumed Linie formation, 1/2 Panzer-Zug and 2/1 Panzer-Zug begin their advance on the central hill. Interestingly Oberleutnant Exorcist chose to take the lead position in his Zug formation, while his counterpart Von Nudel took the slightly more cautious option of second-left.

                          1050 - 2. Zug/K. Auf. outriders dismount near R17.

1051 - Kampfgruppe Heinz begins moving west toward the road into Genshagen.

1054 - 2. Zug/K. Auf. outriders near Genshagen flash green pennons and move to bypass it to the east. Oberleutnant Sturm and the main body at Q10 continue to inspect enemy positions on the hilltop, flashing red pennons at the landser of the 1/2 Panzer-Zug as they come up on their flank. 2/1 Panzer-Zug promptly comes to a halt as well, and Oberleutnants Sturm, von Nudel and Exorcist convene for a brief tactical discussion. With 14 Panzers and 8 motorcycles arrayed before them, some movement can be seen from the enemy's prepared position.

1101 - 2. Zug/K. Auf. outriders mount up near R17, twirling green pennons before proceeding northwards. The outriders near Genshagen appear to have disappeared from view northwards.

1104 - Kampfgruppe Heinz is halted just south of Genshagen by an officious Obersturmführer demanding they disarm before entering the secured zone. After a brief and heated argument, Oblt. Heinz orders his Panzers to drive on - forcing the Obersturmführer to leap out of the way or be crushed.

1108 - Kampfgruppe Heinz begins taking up positions in Genshagen, closely watched by SS troops and carefully keeping their fields of fire well clear of the dignitaries on the stand - who seem to be taking this unexpected addition to the town positively.

1110 - Oberleutnant Ludwig and Hauptmann Müller arrive at the held-up attack, breaking up the impromptu tactical discussion with a blistering reprimand on the importance of seizing the initiative in the face of the enemy.

1111 - There is a short crash of massed fire from the enemy positions observable north of Genshagen - the enemy is believed to be in in at least Kompanie strength there. No sign of the outriders in that direction. The massed Lignie opens fire on the enemy positions at 1km with low accuracy, though with some apparent success in keeping their heads down as the probe advances.

1113 - The sharp reports of long-range rifle fire spang harmlessly off the armour of the PzKpfw Is making the attack on the hill, the occasional heavier thud betraying the presence of simulated steel-cored anti-armour rounds... without much notable effect. Then one Panzer from 3/2 Zug shudders, and swiftly the word comes over the wireless: 'Sea Rose 3, you are destroyed. Shut down your engine and await the end of the exercise.' Through raw instinct as much as anything else, the freshly raised Leutnant Fritz raises himself out of the tank's hatch warily, ducking as each round snapped past him but snapping out a swift message with his pennons before ducking back in to safety.

The three-tank Zug grinds to a halt, throwing off the aim of the PAK round that merely glances off Sea Rose 5 - and immediately pivot their turrets to direct machine-gun fire across the enemy position... suppressing the PaK 36 for now. On the other side of the line, Oblt. Exorcist directs his Zug's counter-fire against a second enemy PaK well, managing to shoot up its crew though some men can be seen trying to wheel it to shield against the approaching Panzer-wave even now.

The biggest threat turns out to be an MG-34 that suddenly opens in fire, sending a flickering stream of fire towards Oblt. Sturm's Krzn. Auf. Zug which dodges, and weaves... but finally intersects the tracer fire - as the formation scatters to seek cover behind the better-armoured Panzers, no less than three motorcycles are tagged as being out of action - including the Feldwebel's!

1115 - 1/2 Panzer-Zug continues forward, Oblt. Vosburgh's men keeping their hatches firmly down as rifle-fire spangs off their armor - their gunners traversing their MGs across the enemy trenchline. A flicker of the white-helmeted umpires can be seen... and then a whole section of the enemy line ceases fire. Sturm's detachment follows the Panzers up into the enemy positions... only for the advance to stall as one of the PaK 36s opens up again. From their current position the two Zuege can actually direct fire down the axis of some of the trench-lines... but the recon team is actually pinned behind the Panzers by the weight of fire directed their way - and two of the Panzers are down! One from the PaK... and one from the point-blank MG fire, to its crew's vociferous objection.

A dozen men break from the enemy line - thoroughly intimidated by the seemingly-impervious Panzers - and start to flee before a burst of Panzer-fire (and a crimson-faced Umpire) remove them all from the equation.

1118 - A full Aufklaerung of Infanterie can be observed forming up against Genshagen, carefully staying a full km away and only exchanging long-range PaK fire with Kampfgruppe Heinz - with minimal effect.

1120 - There is the distant crash of PaK fire from around C20, and the lead elements of Ackermann's Abteilung can be seen stalling at the bridge crossing. Infantry and around 40 Panzers can be seen in the area, but it's hard to make out any detail from Genshagen... and trees occlude the area from the rest of von Ravenstein's Abteilung.

1122 - A mixed force of motorcycles and scout cars comes tearing out of the road from the trees at K18, wheeling immediately to the north.

1123 - 3/1 Panzer-Kompanie emerges from the trees at K18, doing around 50 kph - and immediately wheels north in the wake of the recon company.

1125 - A third Panzer is knocked out from Oblt. Vosburgh's Zug as the three Zuege continue suppressing fire onto the enemy positions... but the with the current doctrine of fire-or-move, the attack has clearly stalled. Infantry starts moving up on the flanks to add their fire against the enemy trenches - and to ready themselves to take the enemy position the old-fashioned way.

With grenades, and the point of the bayonet.

1128 - B Infanterie-Kompanie emerges from the trees at K18 and starts heading northwards - then halts.

1130 - The Infanterie-Abteilung facing Genshagen finishes forming up as the last Kompanie arrives from Regimental reserves. The PaKs continue firing, but have yet to hit a tank given the Panzers' well-protected positions.

As von Ravenstein eyes the situation from 2. Abteilung HQ, he considers what must now be done to secure the victory for the nascent Panzer Regiment with the eyes of Grossdeutschland watching...

                            • Okay, I have some important questions for Khryses,

First, you did a great job of writing down the update! So, my question is what if somebody (like me) did not give tactical orders or thoughts in this thread, does that mean he's automatically out of the game?

This leads to the next question, since this is only a tactical exercise, not a live fire scenario, how does it work out when a character is killed in the battle? How can that player come back in the game? By adding a new unit or character?

I'm pretty sure as we start the journey through World War Two, some of characters will be killed off in battles. Just want to know what's the rule on coming back in the game.

As it stands now, I'm out of game until the end of tactical exercise.

                              Thanks for answering my questions.

What are yellow spots on the battle map?
