Thankfully none of the commanders advocated this from the start ....

Wouldn't be a very difficult exercise had we been fully equipped with Panzer IIIs and Sd.Kfz. 251s, now would it?

My point is we can't be mobile unless we have the tools to do it. If we want to conduct the kind of mobile warfare that would have resulted in this victory being even more decisive, we need better equipment. However that would make the exercise all too easy. I agree that we should try to be as mobile as possible, but we can't move the infantry around like that given the circumstances of the mission. So we should spend less time talking about what we should have and more time talking about what we do have and what we can do with it.

          • I agree. There are 2 things that are non-negotiable, if panzer divisions are to be truly useful.

            1) Increased firepower. We need to be able to take out other Panzers with Panzers. The ability to direct-fire HE is also important.

            2) Infantry Transport. Infantry must be able to advance at the speed of a Panzer. Therefore we need to improve our transports, doctrine, or both so that infantry can advance under MG fire with the Panzers without taking excessive casualties. That means armored transports that are all-terrain capable.

              FROM: Oberleutnant Reinhard Sturm
              2. Zuge/Krzn. Aufklaerungskompanie

SUBJECT: Addendum to Oberst Heinzel's AAR

              I. In the new era of armoured warfare the use of motorcycles as screens for advancing forces have shown a value far less than anticipated. This can be attributed to the following reasons.

1A. Cross-country mobility of the motorcycles have been less than hoped for.
1B. A lack of radios makes keeping in contact with follow on forces difficult to maintain.
1C. Lack of armour except for helmets mean entire crews can be killed on contact with the enemy.

While this should not to be interpreted to mean that motorcycles lack any value for the Heer; the value is limited to the FeldJaeger (MPs) and as convoy escorts or as mounts for Schnelle Infanterie. What is needed for the Aufklaerungs forces is an armoured vehicle with good cross country mobility, fire power to suppress enemy forces till relieved or fight their way out of a kill zone and each vehicle be equipped with radios (transmitters and receivers).

We're definitely going to have to make due with trucks though. We won't be able to be equipped exclusively with 251s. So we'll have to choose where we employ them carefully. The 251s should be used only when the Infantry will definitely need armored protection.

                • The trucks can be used in the early phases of a battle to get troops into positions, and can be used in areas where the enemy is suppressed or eliminated. Armored vehicles should be used when operating under enemy fire. You can also use these as 'battle taxis' dropping off infantry in positions, and going back for more.

Example: If we had had 2 251s in the last engagement, they could have continually brought our reserve infantry into Genshagen, redeployed infantry to face the new threat, and participated in the final assault on the hill by driving infantry directly TO the trenches.

                    I think we'll have more than 2. We'll likely get 6 or 9, that's enough for 2 Platoons or 1 Company.

                    • It was just an example.

I don't believe in using halftracks for attacking enemy positions unless you don't need them to transport infantry into position, or you desperately need that MG. Now scout cars...........those make great inf. support platforms.

                      • Sorry people, there's rather more information to prep than I'd expected - part of the problem of trying to cross-reference 17 tabs in my browser and three hard-copy texts

As I have work early tomorrow I doubt I'll get everything finished to post tonight - but with any luck I'll get enough done that I can complete the rest tomorrow after I get home.

Thoroughly looking forward to this map - and the OOB has fun for all, though I suspect we'll frustrate poor Hans Muller

God damn it! I assume that means no 251s, Panzer IIIs and Panzer IVs, or at least not in the numbers I was hoping for....
