  • Bloodbath - 4/44 and 5/44

    Overview

The late winter and spring of 1944 proved to be perhaps the bloodiest seven weeks of the war. The German front in the west has been badly damaged but is holding on. In the east the Red Army has struck very hard, especially near Krakow in southern Poland, tearing a hole in the AG South. In the south the British are poised to take Linz while heavy German armoured attacks batter the Russians in Hungary.

    Strategic Warfare

U-Boat War: Normal; 3 U-Boats lost, no new U-Boat points received. The U-Boats can still score delays but production has long ceased.

    Strategic Air War:

Currently there are 36 interceptors concentrated in defence of the western industrial targets. Allied bombers have switched their attacks to railway targets and only bombed one manufacturing centre.

After bombing and repairs there are numerous rail centres and hubs that are bombed out as well as heavy damage to the resource industry. While manufacturing centres are largely functioning the lack of resources is crippling industry.

The LW interceptors again scored against 3 Allied strategic escorts for the loss of 3 Interceptors.

    Losses

    German: 2 x 1-5-1 Static reduced, 3 x 5-5 Mtn reduced, 25 x 6-5 infantry reduced, 4 x 6-10 reduced, 1 x 8-8 reduced, 2 x 1-5-1 Static destroyed, 13 x 6-5 destroyed, 3 Intcptr AP destroyed, 3 U-Boat Pts lost

    Allies: 7 x 2-5-1 Turk reduced, 1 x CW 8-10 reduced, 3 x US 8-10 reduced, 2 x CW 9-8 reduced, 1 x US 9-8 reduced, 1 x CW 3-8 destroyed, 3 Str Escort lost

    Red Army: 7 x 4-4 reduced, 9 x 5-5 reduced, 3 x 8-6 reduced, 1 x 2-5 destroyed, 1 x 3-5 destroyed

    New Production: 4 x 3-10 motor bde, 1 x 13-8 (rebuild), 7 IRP, 2 MRP, 1 Fort, 7 AP

Infantry and armour replacements are becoming scarce and the breaking point may soon come. It will soon be necessary to begin combining kampfgruppes into divisions (3 KG = 1 div) instead of waiting for replacements to rebuild individual divisions or to send them back into the production chain for rebuilding. This will lower the number of divisions but permit some to continue in front line service.

    Update - OB West

Despite the relatively poor weather the US landed amphibious forces in Flanders, the Scheldt and the west coast of Holland over the past seven weeks. Combined with heavy assaults from ground forces and assisted by as many as four parachute divisions these attacks have breached the West Wall defences along the Meuse and Escaut Rivers, capture Antwerp, Rotterdam and Amsterdam and finally have crossed the Rhine at Arnhem. Both Belgium and Holland have also experienced large scale partisan uprisings but these forces have not greatly added to the difficulties faced by OB West. It is expected that the US forces must pause to both rest after many weeks of constant action and to wait for the major ports behind their advance to be repaired. As things stand they cannot advance much further due to supply constraints.

The 15th Army has all but been destroyed in the fighting in Flanders, Belgium and Holland but is being reconstituted along the Dutch-German border. Nevertheless, the front there is thin and the troops could not be expected to hold for long. To the south and west part of 7th Army remains trapped in the Cambrai Pocket while the remainder of the army has retreated into the Belgian Ardennes. Fifth Pz Army has side stepped to the right and now hold the Brussels area and the southern face of the Allied salient into Holland.

Finally, Army Group H (1st and 9th Armies) hold the remainder of the front from Luxembourg to the Swiss border. These armies are being pressed by the French 1st as well as the US 3rd and 7th Armies and the 1st Italian Army. Reserves are few but there are three pz gr divisions resting behind the front.

Included is a map of northern Germany showing the current state of the coastal defences and areas reserves. there are two static divisions in Denmark.

    Update - OB Sud

Army Group Med has just about been split apart from the 17th Army of Army Group G. The fall of Linz will mark this break and it is intended to have the 10th Army bend it left back to the upper Danube River and form a line running from Innsbruck-Salzburg-Regensburg. This will protect the rear of the western front and AG H along the upper Rhine. The 17th Army will continue to protect the right flank of the four panzer armies of the army group currently battering at the gates of Budapest and giving the Russians a heavy fight in Hungary.

    Update - Hungary

The Balaton Offensive has been underway for two weeks and the four pz armies (1st, 2nd, 3rd plu sthe 6th SS Pz) have brought the Red Army attacks to an abrupt halt and thrown back their lead elemenst with significant losses. While some of the lead pz units have been pulled back to rest, fresh formation have moved forward and the attack will continue to the west of Budapest in order to envelop the city from the west while other pz formations strike east around the northern outskirts. Infantry from the 8th Army is supporting.

The fly in the ointment is to the north in Slovakia. Here the 12th Army's left flank was driven in by a very heavy Red Army attack that has ripped a hole in the front between Army Group South and AG F. Local counterattacks failed to seal the breach but more reserves are en route. Army Group South is in some difficulty as its reserve forces are few and badly battered. If permissible the 3rd SS Pz Corps (3rd and 5th SS Pz, 4th SS Pz Gr) will be detached from 6th SS PZ Army and sent north to AG South. Twelfth Army will also swing its right flank back to shorten its front. Massive enemy air interdiction (Allied and Russian) is making movements extremely difficult.

    Update - Poland

In Poland, as expected, Army Group Centre has received the heaviest blow as the Red Army has struck towards Breslau and the Oder River crossings in that area. Fourth Pz Army along with 9th , 4th and 2d Armies are fighting hard but the pressure is heavy. There are adequate reserve available for the moment but a fighting retreat to the Oder is recommended. The right wing of 1st Parachute Army is already in place along the middle order as a back up to AG Centre.

To the north the two armies of AG Vistula (16th and 18th) received a less heavy blow but were compelled to retreat when the coastal flank was penetrated. This sector of the front is backed up by the remainder of the 1st Parachute Army and additional army infantry formation along the lower Oder, Berlon and Stettin. There are currently no available pz or pz gr divisons in this sector but the Russians do not seem very intent on developing their drive on Berlin at at the moment. The may be intending to cross the Oder further south and then strike at Berlin from two directions.

The OTL counter offensives in that region didn't achieve much did they?
A wild liberal appears! Conservative uses logical reasoning and empirical evidence! It's super effective! Wild liberal faints.

        • Nope, not much at all.
But this is the German Army that failed to take Greece, and I knew that.

The Joker from the latest Batman movie has something to say about this sort of thing, can you Kibitzers guess what it was?

              • Abandon Hungary?

                Mini Upadate

Front commanders must advise that the situation in Czechoslovakia compels the abandonment of the offensive in Hungary and the immediate withdrawal of the heavy panzer forces to the north to escape the forming salient. It may already be too late to ensure the escape of all forces involved and this threathens the entire southern front with collapse.

                • Yes, run for it. Leave the Arty Divs as speed bumps , Infantry too if they can't make it.

As sole remaining German commander, I am ordering, demanding that EVERY German unit of any kind in Northern Germany is to be sent to close the gaps in our southern front.
I don't care if they are engaged in combat or not.
I don't care about anything but getting them to that front.
My HQ is using every measure to get every German unit to that southern area possible, every hook, crook, whatever.
Up to and including the point where I am arrested for treason, if they can catch me.

                  See post 366.

Yes, I'm keeping the Russians out of Berlin the best way I know how.
