  • I am still carrying out the last set of orders:

-France - Push hard in France, make use of amphib and para forces to break lines at Calais/Dunkirk.

    - Austria - continue advance north to Vienna and then Germany and Czechoslovakia if possible.

Question for SHAEF - Should additional landings in Belgium, Holland and Germany be entertained? If so,... how deep an outflank does SHAEf want ot risk?

    Likely landing areas are:

    Antwerp
    Roterdam/Amsterdam
    Wilhelmshaven/Bremen

    • Great! I say (depending on weather in the North Sea AND how much we push the Germans back in this turn) I would vote for:

      1. Wilhelmshaven/Bremen
      2. Roterdam/Amsterdam
      3. Antwerp

Of course it depends on the strength of our force vs. what they might encounter. We don't want to foolishly waste good men. I think it would also depend on how long they would have to be isolated until a link up.

      • Well, the farther away from the ground forces the greater the risk.

        • OK, we'll wait for the update and then go from there.

          • Spring has arrived and with it the firm ground and calm seas.

            Update - France and Belgium

US 9th Army is concentrated on the coast near Dunkirk and Calais poised to take over the left wing of 25th Army Group and begin the drive into Holland. First US and 3rd Turkish Armies need to finsih reducing the pockets of the Flanders and Cambrai Pockets before joining the drive into northwest Germany. In the centre, 57th AG (5th and 7th US and 1st French Armies) will strike in the Ardennes aimed the central Rhine. In the south 31st AG (3rd US and 1st Italian Armies) will launch holding attacks into the Saar to pin German forces along the Rhine.

Elements of 15th US Army are in England and can be used as outflanking forces for landings in Belgium, Holland and Germany, SHAEF to decide. The 1st Allied Airborne Army (2 US and 2 Brit parachute divisions) will be committed to support the offensives in Belgium.

<<Map 1 - The Allies in NW Europe are poised to to lau ch the heaviest offensive yet against the German army in western Europe.>>

            Update - Austria and Hungary

Eleventh Army Group (1st and 2nd Turkish, the Greek Army) continue to pin the German forces in western Austria. Tenth AG (8th and 9th British Armies) will begin an offensive aimed at Linz and then turning northwest tpwards Salzburg and Regensburg. At the the eastern end of the line, 12th AG (2nd British, 1st Canadian Armies) will attack north towards Vienna and then exploiting towards Prague.

<<Map 2 - United Nations forces ready themselves to invade Germany and liberate Czechoslovakia from the south>>

            Update - Eastern Hungary

In the Soviet area of operation in Hungary the Germans appear to have launched a massive offensive led by what appears to be extremely large mechanised forces. The attack has begun east of Lake Balaton and is driving south. Should the Red Army front be driven back this will expose the right flank of the Canadian and Polish forces to the west. A close eye will need to be kept on this sector. SHAEF to advise what action to be taken in the event of a Soviet retreat.

              Strategic Air War:

No serious bomber losses in the last months operation but the interceptors have paid the price in protecting their charges. The LW interceptors again scored against 3 Allied strategic escorts for the loss of 3 Interceptors.

Targeting has been changed to transportation infrastructure but manufacturing and resource centres continue to be struck. Continued bombing of the transportation net will be carried out to block German movement by rail.

              Update - Western Front

The US 9th Army exploited its breach of the German lines in Belgium and Holland and together with 1st Army attacks has all but destroyed the German 7th and 15th Armies. The ports in Holland have been damaged and 9th Army must pause for a few weeks to allow supplies to catch up. In the meantime the US 15 Army has begun deploying in Holland and will support the drive into Germany. US 5th Army and the French 1st Army have struck east of Brussels and have broken the fortified line and will soon be over the Ourthe River with the Ruhr as their targets. US 7th Army has the role of protecting the drive eastward. The Italian 1st Army and US 3rd Army have paused to reorganise and rest after crossing into the Saar but will soon resume their offensive on Ludwigshaven with Nuremburg as their objective.

                • Good question. It appear the German army is (finally) on the brink of collapsing. When that happens it will literally be a race to see who can out race the other. The biggest problem will be dealing with the pockets *and* maintaining a drive for the capital.

                  • Do we have reserves still(in France and in Austria)?
Can we use paratroopers in this race?

                    • The paras are about to leave Holland to refit and be ready for the final dash. However, care must be taken not to drop them too far in advance of the ground forces. The only reserves left are four British divisions in England.

                      • We should push as hard as we can, but if there is any chance of building up an armored reserve in case there is an opening, then I would vote for that. However, if this hinders advance then it is not a choice.
