      Update - Baltic Front

The enemy's Army Group Vistula has withdrawn again to the west as the Baltic front improved its positions a bit for the spring. Artillery assets were transferred to the West Front to assist with the crossing of the Vistula near Warsaw but can now be transferred back in time for the spring offensive. Baltic Front will continue to harass the enemy's front line where possible.

<< The Baltic Front slowly clears the German forces from the forests of the Polish Corridor>>

      West and 1st Ukraine Front

West Front was heavily reinforced by artillery and armour for the first time since mid-1942 and struck the Fascists position up and downstream of Warsaw, inflicting numerous casualties and crossing the river in strength. Unfortunately the enemy has managed to eascape from the Warsaw salient with most if forces but the attack will be pressed to try and close a wider pincer in the centre.

First Ukraine managed only some supporting attacks on the left of West Front as most of its artillery and armour/mech formation have been tranferred elsewhere. First Ukraine Front will likely be squeezed out as the front lines move farther west.

<<West Front crosses the Vistula and prepares to drive into western Poland>>

      Southwest Front

It took most of the month to establish the supply lines over the Carpathians into Hungary and to transfer the army and artillery assets into this sector. The offensive aimed at Budapest and the Prague will commence in mid 2/44 as previously ordered. Prisoners captured have reported that the British in Austria appear to be breaking through the German lines SW of Vienna so the previously ordered drive north to cut them off will also be carried out.

Update - Baltic and West Front

The Baltic Front was fairly quiet as most of the action took place against the enemy's Army Group Centre. Baltic Front is slowly rebuilding it tank strength in preparation for the summer campaign. Meanwhile, West Front, heavily reinforced with the bulk of the tank and artillery assets struck hard along the Warsaw-Breaslau axis. This attracted heavy enemy armoured reserves and the fighting was heavy with a satisfactory amount of terrain taken. The Baltic and Western Fronts will wind up operations and the end of the month to rest the troops, absorb replacements and to redeploy for the main strike in May.

Update - Ukraine and Southwest Front

Little action took place on the Ukraine Front but a small offensive to test the defence failed to make progress and was called off. Southwest Front has begun it drive on Budapest and has also reached the shores of Lake Balaton. The spring will force a halt to operations soon but until then every advantage shall be pressed.

              • 4 and 5/44 Update

                Overview

The Red Army fell back on its artillery assets to help punish the Fascists forces in central Poland and they yielded before the heavy barrages. In Hungary the heroic Soviet forces launched a narrow front assault on both sides of Budapest and the city is about fall into the hands of the Red Army.

Update - Poland and North Germany

The main assault fell on the German Army Group Centre over the past five weeks. Almost all available artillery was concentrated on this sector in order to vastly increase the odds and limit Red Army losses. The strategy worked and the Red Army drove the enemy back through western Poland to the German frontier with little loss. Unfortunately the weather will force a halt to operations but this time will be used to rebuild forces and deploy for the main assault on Germany itself in the spring.

                <<Map 1 - The drive through Poland was successful.>>

                Update - Slovakia and Hungary

The main action in the south was focused on a short, sharp offensive against the German forces defending the Hungarian capital and its approaches. Supported by artillery the Red Army battered a total of six German divisions and the remnants of two of these will soon be destroyed when the city falls. The weather will also force a halt to operation but the newly named "Hungarian Front will prepare for a drive north into Czechoslovakia when the dry weather returns.

                  • Update -Baltic and West Front

                    Partial report as promised.

In the north the ground is hard enough to commence operations but there is still a chance of late rains mucking things up. The armies need a week to get set and then the atack can go in. If rain return the attack will be delayed. They army has concentrated its main strength between Krakow and the Baltic and the offensives will be planned to shatter the front and race west into Germany and Czechoslovakia

                    <<Map 1 - The Red Army's concentrations are nearly complete>>

                    Update - Hungary and Slovakia

The Germans have begun a very heavy assault with large armoured formation and there are more apparent behind the lines. This could be an attempt to disrupt the coming offensive in the north and to retake Budapest.
                    Options are as follows :

                    1) Hold the line and defend the gains. AT brigades are near by which would permit the heavy armour to withdraw into reserve. The artillery will move back to support any counterattacks

                    2) Counterattack with the available forces. The forces available are mainly rifle corps and a few Guards Rifle corps supported by numerous tank and mechanised brigades. There are to Mobile Groups of heavy armour available along with their supporting artillery.

                    3) Fighting retreat. The front could slowly retreat back over the Danube and go over to the defensive. The armour and artillery could be pulled out of the line to create a strong reserve to hold the river.

In southern Poland the armies will also prepare for the attack next week and will not divert southward unless ordered to by STAVKA. Their target is Prague. Perhaps the STAVKA could request the western Allies to drive north Vienna, Linz and into Moravia to cut the Fascist supply line coming from the wsouth of Germany.

                    • The Fascist Line Breaks - 4/44 - 5/44

                      Overview

The Offensive has been engaged all along the front from the Baltic Sea to Carpathian Mountains. Only in Hungary, where the Fascist have thrown in the majority of their armoured forces, is the Red Army on the defensive. The Central has broken the enemy front near Krakow and is exploiting westward, aimed at liberating Czechoslovakia. The Baltic and West Fronts are also advancing as the triumphant forces of the Soviet Union close on the homeland of the invaders.

                      • As ordered the offensive has continued and as of the first week of 6/44 the breach in the south has expanded and Western Front looks ready to break through to the Oder. Pockets may be forming soon and these will need to be dealt with before exploiting too far west (they'll block follow up if too large). If the Germans collaspe suddenly it will be a race for Berlin.
