      Mercenary Sign Up Sheet

      Unit Name- Tous Kókkinous Psýllous

      Race- Thracian

Type of Force- A mixed company of Peltasts with light armor (leather + metal stud), shield (wood + wicker), helmet (metal in the Greek style but open faced), javelins, light sword and Hypaspistai with medium armor (metal breastplate, greaves, gauntlets) large metal shield, long thrusting spear (but shorter than a Hoplite's in a phalanx).
The Peltasts are skirmishers to protect the Hypastii while the Hypaspistai fight in closed ranks but are more agile than a phalanx on the field.
Strength roughly 3 - 400 total with a mix that is close to 50 - 50 of the above.

Preferred Employment- Hire out mostly to larger armies as flank support troops to the main body. Some independent scouting and light secondary operations usually with other units in smaller battles.

Mixing- Hire out to who's paying the best and on the hiring party's reputation. Cautious about hiring to enemies of Thrace.

Were the prices for kitting out soldiers for new recruits, or upgrading existing ones? Also can we spend all the talents on upgrades/recruits/upkeep or do we need to split them with the men?

Kit prices are for new recruits, if soldiers offer to work for you and have their own kit you only pay the hiring cost for each man. Same goes for cavalry. Already having horses dramatically reduces the cost. Then instead of paying cavalry costs your pay recruitment and instead pay the infantry cost.

Also, if you want to upgrade your men’s existing kit let me know what you want to do and I’ll quote a price.

No the men get the upkeep for their meals and pay, everything else can be spent how you like.

In the event of a country raid, the company is to engage after the raid is carried out and the Scythians are burdened with their spoils.
                The Scythians Ride!

With the immediate discovery of the Scythian horsemen the scouts report the arrival of 2,000 mounted raiders. Strangely, the orders the men receive are to wait and observe rather than intervene while the Scythians ravage the countryside. The Scythian horsemen quickly get to work with their pillaging, arson, and destruction. After a few hours of looting, they ready themselves to leave the area with their loot. However, the Romans decide this was an opportune time to attack the enemy. Trying to be stealthy, they dart forward in an attempt to reach the enemy before they’re discovered. However, several Scythian horsearchers spot them and shout and before long showers of arrows meet the Romans and their mounted scouts. The scouts, armored too lightly to resist the arrows fall in droves and several Roman infantrymen also drop. The Romans continue trying to advance forward, but accurate arrow fire from the mass of horsearchers propels them backwards. While their armor and shields protect some of them from injury, other arrows dodge their protection and fell many a Roman. The Romans were too stubborn to stop despite their losses and with their spears preventing a Scythian charge, they march forward and force the Scythians to leave behind their heavier loot that wouldn’t fit on their horses. A few volleys of javelins from the Romans also fells a couple of Scythians and the Scythian chieftain decides to take what loot he can and leave before reinforcements from the city can reach the Romans. With the Scythians gone, the beaten and battered Romans could finally rest. The representatives of the satrap Phillip were less than happy. The Scythians had raided the countryside with impunity and only been forced to leave behind the larger objects of loot. And despite the combat only a few had been felled in battle. With this in mind, the representative pays half of the contract fee to the Romans since they failed to protect the countryside or destroy the Scythian force.

                Casualties-

                30 light cavalry KIA
                15 light cavalry WIA

                40 Roman infantry KIA
                50 Roman infantry WIA

                Reward- half of contract fee

Side Note- Attempting to fight a people who mostly use cavalry and horsearchers with an infantry force is not the best plan. You might choose a contract that better suits your company’s strengths next time.

Aegeus spends the winter among the Samnites, taking advantage of their generosity (half upkeep). He also accepts the services of the 52 Samnites wishing to join him with their own gear, and sets some of his veteran Agema to work ensuring their training and discipline are to his exacting standards. Aegeus will not accept uncontrollable warriors into his company, he expects every man to do his job and every man to do it well. Aegeus also hires an additional 52 men, each able to show himself a veteran of a previous campaign, outfitting them in the Peltast fashion with local flavor such as the larger ovoid shield favored by the Samnites and medium armor such as a hamata shirt and helm. Aegeus makes some effort to impress upon the local master smiths the need for uniformity in the shields and helms to make men easily identifiable on the battlefield. These veterans also train with Aegeus veteran Agema to improve their skills and discipline.

                    Loot: 180 split, 90.
                    Payment 150 minus 50, 100.
                    Bonus 25

                    215 balance.

                    Minus 7, half upkeep. 208
Minus 52 pay for local volunteers. 156
Minus 52 pay for veteran recruits. 104
                    Minus 52 Medium Kit. 0

                    Total Force:

130 Elite Hypaspist Agema, Macedonian, Heavy Armor, Aspis, Xiphos, Javelins, Sarissa
52 Samnite Hero Swordsmen, Medium Armor, Scutum, Xiphos (or similar), Javelins

All you would need to do is pay the cost of a medium infantry kit per light cav you want to convert to medium. Since you already have the horses you just needs arms and armor.

                        • In a tavern in Lilybaeum Rojik drinks with his officers.

’You have made me proud. You have brought us all riches, and stamped the deeds of the men of Mars forever on the history of this isle. For a thousand years mothers will use us to frighten children into behaving’
The officers thump the tables in agreement.
‘Now we have wealth I say we use it to gain more so that one day we will own villas like the ones we plundered. That we have slaves to wait on us and woman to pleasure us. That we will one day be will be kings - Basileus all of us!’
The men cheer again and thump the tables.
’The Greeks of Sicily have been kind to us. They have generously donated enough money to us that we can buy better armour and weapons for our horsemen. Never again will we have to leave loot behind. From now on if they want our gold they can pay for it with their blood.’
The men cheer again. Moral is high and these men would ride into Hades if so ordered.
                          Rojik raises his goblet.
                          ‘Murder, arson and plunder!’
The answer comes back with a roar: ‘Men of Mars!’
‘Tonight is yours. You earned it. Tonight everything is permitted, but tomorrow we will lunch and discuss our next move’

                          finances - 350
