  • As his men grow restless waiting for orders while encamped with a contingent of Mamertines, a message is received from another mercenary commander inviting us to winter in Rhodes. Having never been and tired of this dead-end contract, Artorious decides to leave for Rhodes. Before doing so though, he uses the loot captured by himself and Rojik to hire 25 experienced Sarmatian spearmen to replace his fallen and pays his men. The rest of the loot is held for our ally if and when they request it. We prefer this wasn't how this contract ended, but life will continue.

    Hires and Buys
25 Medium Sarmatian Spearmen 2t = 75t (kit and recruitment cost?)
    Upkeep: 47.5t
    Expenses this turn: 122.5t

Chest: 227.5t loot (held for Rojik)

    • Excellent. So it looks like everyone has their stuff taken care of.

Tac I know has his commitment to fight in Italy, Pruitt and Frt will pursue the Rhodian contract, and Snowy would you like me to draw up a list of contracts or are you teaming up with someone? I’m fine with either, I just don’t want to write up seven full contracts if it isn’t necessary.

          • Historical Updates-

OOC: Here is where our game departs dramatically from the historical record and becomes entirely alternative history. I’ve used historical information and likelihood as well as random die rolls to determine these events.

Leonnatus’ complete victory over the Greeks without the assistance of either Antipater or Krateros is the beginning of the end for the Greek coalition. With their field army destroyed, many of the members of the coalition sued for peace, but who were they to make peace with? Before such a surrender could happen, who would lead the Macedonians? Before long it became apparent that negotiations rather than open warfare would decide this issue so that the Greeks had no chance to intervene. Leonnatus married Cleopatra of Macedon, Alexander the Great’s sister, in a massive and grand ceremony with both Krateros and Antipater as well as the rest of the army attending. This marriage cemented Leonnatus in a position of power and with his victory over the Greeks adding to his prestige as well, Krateros and Antipater peacefully bowed to the inevitable and became his lieutenants, with Leonnatus declaring himself the true regent of the Argead Empire. Perdiccas, hearing of these developments, has mobilized the rest of the empire for war to challenge Leonnatus’ claim to the regency and as Diadochi choose sides, it is clear that the first Diadochi war is near at hand.

            Rhodian Anti-Piracy Operations-

The merchants of Rhodes and Kyrene were quite impressed with Pruitt’s defeat of the pirates that had attacked the convoy and have decided to give him the right of first refusal for another contract regarding combating piracy. The messenger relays the details of the proposed contract, namely the destruction of the main pirate base on the east coast of Crete. The merchants are uncertain of where the pirate base is, but are quite certain it is somewhere along the eastern part of Crete due to the location of the pirate attacks on Rhodian shipping. As an escort, three outfitted triremes are offered as an escort for Pruitt and his men along with around 60 marines between the three ships. The contract is offered on an objective based pay system. Each small pirate haven destroyed will be worth 150 talents and the main base will be worth 400 talents with all loot going to the mercenaries. The Rhodian ships accompanying you will be the witnesses to the system.

            Neapolitan Independence-

Despite being busy fighting in the wars of the Diadochi in Greece, Aegeus and his informants have been keeping tabs on events in Italy to monitor Neapolis, the object of his pledge to his Agema. Some of these agents report that the Samnites and Romans have continued their war, but clashes have led to a stalemate as the weakened Roman army has failed to make inroads into Samnite territory. Neapolis, though not on the frontlines, is protected by a stout Roman garrison approaching 2,000 soldiers behind formidable walls. However, the population is held to be more than willing to return to Greek rule outside of a core of Roman supporters and colonists that have profited from Roman involvement in the city’s affairs. Leonnatus has graciously offered his new vassal free transport back to Italy, all that is left is for the Macedonian to plot the liberation of his new demesne.

            • Aegeus would speak to Bolgios and tell him that he would be honored to have the Celts march to Italy. The Romans have cavalry, but nothing of this quality, though they are tough fighters who will keep coming even when it's probably no longer wise to do so. As for payment, Bolgios would have his pick of the loot, and Aegeus is certain that a retaken Heraclea under Aegeus leadership would have space in the coffers to well compensate the Celts for their efforts.

              • Can I add a few Missile Troops to the Triemes? I usually assume Marines are similar to Peltasts with armor.

The marines are hoplites. Your own men will be on transports.

Well there are Celts in Italy too - it's not likely that Bolgios will march his men and horse from Greece to Italy, if such a "strategic" move were to be done it would be a small party of nobles, their family and retinue travelling by ship, then recruit locally.

But more than likely the upcoming war among the Greeks will provide all the opportunities we need, that's the reason I set up in Athens in the first place 3 seasons ago.

Italy is a backwater in this timeframe, Brennus plundered Rome at the start of the century and that is the last we will hear from those upstarts - Greece is the center of the world

Snowy is correct. Greece and Asia are where the superpowers are about to come to blows, Italy is currently a backwater, though an eventful one at that.

However, with the events that have happened. The Lamian War is over. Leonnatus has taken over Macedonia and Greece, but the First Diadochi War is just about to begin.

Snowy, I’ll generate a list of contracts for you to take a look at.

                          • Non Exclusive Contracts-

                            The First Diadochi War-

With the lines of the first war among the Diadochi being drawn, mercenaries were in great demand in the East. Leonnatus issued a call for any mercenaries looking for work to attend him in his capital in Pella and Perdiccas also sent word to various mercenaries that any who wished to work could find a new paymaster in his capital in Babylon. Another major player, Ptolemy, also uses his massive resources to attract mercenaries to Egypt.

Leonnatus- Leonnatus is looking to hire mercenaries for a variety of purposes. He’s seeking warriors willing to guard his borders against Thracians in the North as well as other mercenaries to help with the Greek surrender in the South. Lastly, he’s sending a force to secure new territories in Asia Minor.

Pay- 500 talents to fight in the North, 300 to go to Asia Minor, and 250 to police the Greeks.

Perdiccas- Perdiccas is building an invasion army and is willing to use some of the massive fortune Alexander acquired in his Eastern campaigns. Word of the mountains of silver and gold being offered in exchange for military service draws thousands to Babylon to assemble into a grand army.

                            Pay-650 talents

Ptolemy- Ptolemy is seeking a group of mercenaries for an, interesting secret project and he is willing to pay handsomely for it. His agents are extremely secretive about the mission and few are offered the contract.

                            Pay- 750 talents

                            Colchian Retribution-

Colchis, angered by the mercenaries’ attack on her borders at the behest of Sinope, seeks to hire a force to exact revenge against the high handed Greek merchants. A company is sought that is able and willing to lay waste to Sinope’s merchant marine and territories.

                            Pay- 400 talents

                            Intervention in Iberia-

The Punic city of Gades in Iberia has recently been beset by numerous attacks upon her people and possessions in the countryside. The usually peaceful peoples surrounding the city’s territory have disappeared and have been replaced by a hostile entity that leaves little room for the people of Gades to make their living. The elders of the city seek a company willing to investigate the matter and restore peace and balance to their territories.
