  • Well, tnx for the offers guys, but I suspect there's a post with actual contracts for next season still to come ?

This is more like a 'news report' between turns it seems....

I'll see what my current employers are planning first.

Aegeus sends missives to these Greek cities which find themselves with Epirote soldiers marooned from home and having no leader yet worthy to lead them in battle. His missives note in detail how Aegeus is a veteran of long service to Alexander the Great, and how Aegeus led the small force that destroyed a quarter of a Roman legion two years ago and how he led the Army that raided the Roman sphere through Campania, netting large sums of loot and defeating a full Roman legion in battle including killing their Consul, the highest office in Rome, in personal combat. Aegeus offers the recruitment plus 5 years of payment, 1.5 talents, up front to veteran Macedonian or Epirote Soldiers of the Phalanx, Peltasts, or Cavalry who wish to join in his endeavor. He promises hard campaigning with plenty of adventure, victory, and loot to be had by all.
102 veteran Epirote soldiers make themselves available for hire.

Once I finish answering everyone’s questions and prod them into filling out their sheets, I’ll post a new round of contracts.

80 KIA, 60 WIA Sons of Mars
10 KIA, 20 WIA Medium Cavalry
          15 KIA, 10 WIA Velites

          Sons of Mars

          95 carried over.

          391 added

Recruit 80 green sword men and kit them in medium gear - 200 talents

recruit 10 green med cav and kit them. - 75

          recruit 15 veteran velites - 22 and a half

          upkeep 55

          winter in Lilybaeum

but a question before I give the final balance (and this is a draft) when I recruit do I need to kit out the troops? It seems odd that some guys could roll up and say hey I want to join your cavalry but I’m going to need a horse, weapons and armour. I’ve put it as that in my tally sheet, but common sense says that mercenaries would at least bring the equipment that the position required, and kitting them out is if I wanted to upgrade them. Thanks in advance and all that

That rubric is for hiring soldiers without weapons/armor. There will be opportunities to hire on actual mercenaries who already possess their own weapons and armor elsewhere. Generally hotspots for mercenaries include Greece, Crete, Iberia, and Gaul. If you wish to cast about specifically for available and already kitted mercs in your area or the area where you’ll winter, let me know and I’ll see what’s available.

But keep in mind without extenuating circumstances, such mercenaries are generally more expensive than recruiting your own men. Many will have already formed joined other companies, so you mostly get a mismatched set of people with non uniform arms, armor, and languages.

No problems. Just wanted clarification. Note I’ve changed to veterans from green. Also I’d like to look around for 50-100 spearmen. Green is fine but veteran is better

You can raise green or veterans. I suspect that there are a couple of levels above that but that's something only attainable in combat or if you get a special recruitment event.

Wintering in lilybaeum might reduce your chances there. Wintering in gaul would probably give you an opportunity to pick up spearmen with experience. Or even closer to Libya where the locals would typically fight with spears.

                        • I was thinking there would be a stage between Green and Veteran. There are also Gauls available in the Po River Valley and Cisalpine Gaul. Two such are Mistophorai Keltohellenikoi and Celtic Spearmen.

Hmm, for relatively inexpensive Greek spearmen, you might look at Ekdromoi. Those are going to be the lightest hoplites possible. Typically minimal or no armor, they're good for being heavy enough to throw back skirmishers and fast enough to engage them. But they'd also be pretty decent at fending off cavalry.
