QM: I will be enjoying Midsummer's Eve for the next few days so update will come next Sunday or early next week.

I'm happy to opt for 3 if we are actually invited across.

In the event of a hostile reply (or none), I don't feel we can risk our battlebrothers with any more risky an approach than we need to, and I like the idea of boarding away from the main hatches if we're unsure of our reception.

It would also allow us to board as close as possible to the bridge area, so our second squad is within reasonable supporting range of our first (if needed).

    So we have :

3)Announce our presence and identity, and politely ask permission to come aboard with 1 or more landing craft.

We'll see what the others think…

And I still think it would be a good idea the consult Valerius on the issue.

    Thanks for the replies

Then it appears - we face a choice of

1)Use the transporters and risk losing some of our away team.

2)Use the torpedoes and risk being attacked at a disadvantage, by a so far undetected threat, during our boarding action.

And I assume there's also a small chance of our attempt to talk to the sole survivor is successful, and we just send a shuttle or something to "dock" with the cargo ship IF he cooperates to "let us in" ?

Or do these space ships do not normally exchange personel between them ?

QM: Yeah especially with torpedoes being really strong. A full spread of six torpedoes can cripple a cruiser.

The Sword-class frigates that make up our escorts are one of the most common class of ships in Imperial Navy. They are very sturdy and well armoured for an escort, but they only have medium range laser weapon batteries. They are perfect escorts as they can go 1vs1 and win against most enemy escorts, but against anything heavier they will suffer. Space Marine Chapters have their own contemporary Gladius-class frigate which is bit faster, but due to Swords have such good reputation, they are often used instead due to being readily available.

Currently they are covering Magnificent just in case of anything.

Really the biggest drawback with boarding torpedoes is that the torpedo tubes aren't loaded with normal torpedoes to blow the enemy away. The holes boarding torpedoes make can be closed with rudimentary repairs.
I see - so while you prepare to board you sacrifice offensive power, which in case of an ambush (or attack during the operation) could be costly ?

    That makes sense.

What role play our escort frigates in all this ? Can they provide cover or are they capable of launching torpedoes themselves ?

QM: Boarding is usually done by boarding torpedoes due to they don't care if the enemy vessel has Void Shields. Another choice is to use Caestus Assault Rams, but at the moment you are lacking them. Both of them are capable of punching through the vessels armour and unloading the boarders. Using teleportarium is viable if the enemy Void Shields are down, but just as it was said teleportation has dangers so it is safer to board traditionally. Thunderhawks can be used to board, but they lack ability to go through the armour.

Imperial Navy uses both boarding torpedoes and Shark Assault Boats which are slightly bigger than Caestus Assault Rams.

Really the biggest drawback with boarding torpedoes is that the torpedo tubes aren't loaded with normal torpedoes to blow the enemy away. The holes boarding torpedoes make can be closed with rudimentary repairs.

In terms of this game I will handwave stuff like exact number of Thunderhawks or boarding craft due to even the lore is inconsistent about them.

    That's a good idea yes.

The only risk with teleportation is a small but non-zero chance that whoever we teleport will get lost or torn apart by the beasts of the warp (which is why generally but not always teleportation is limited to terminators only).
I see, so the standard method of boarding would be the torpedoes then ? What are the drawbacks there ?

Maybe we should let Valerian decide, or at least let him suggest a plan ?

Presumably he has some experience with similar actions and has a preference...

There's also the possibility hailing the single survivor results in us being invited in

Send a hail advising that the vessel appears derelict, and announce our intentions to board, and if the hail is not responded to, then the entity that we are aware of upon the ship will be considered hostile in nature.

If no response is received in an appropriate time-frame then use boarding torpedoes.

I'm happy with Grafft and Fulk leading the squads, while Valerian leads the operation as a whole. Suggest that one squad secures the area around the spacehead and is available as a close reserve if required while Valerian and the other squad head for the bridge to secure the unknown contact.

QM: Yeah attempt to hail the ship can be done.

Just a heads up. Midsummer's Eve is next weekend and if I don't push this update before Thursday, which is unlikely, it will go to early next week.

“So there is someone actually alive in the ship. Maybe the Navigator?” Asked Sergeant Kastor.

It could be the Navigator or someone completely else.” You answered. “Our scans didn’t show anything new. The ship is dead, no power, no shields, no nothing. Luckily Librarium managed to find something.” You said back.
Can we communicate with it ?

“So are we going to board?” Sergeant Tigrus asked.
Almost certainly, prepare the boarding parties and tell them locate suitable spots to teleport in.

In addition to Valerian then ? Don't know if we need all three of them to lead a 20 men boarding action...but why not.
