QM: You are correct. By helping different factions and getting them to like you, it will be easier to deal with them. While factions like Imperial Navy don't have control over planets, Administratum does. So befriending Administratum (or hoarding Major Favours), you could maybe acquire a recruiting world.

Outside of owning a recruiting world there are options which I will highlight when they show up. Here is a short text about them.

Space Marine Chapters prefer to use genetically pure strong warriors for their recruits. Many Chapters see majority of the Imperiums population to be soft and not hardened by need of survival. They see that if they were to recruit from this population, the Chapter would turn soft too. While there are some truths in that believe, it is beneficial for Chapters to recruit from worlds having hardy population which is used to fight for their survival.
    Preferred worlds:
-Death Worlds, their deadly and harsh environment makes the few inhabitants strong and resilient. Their population are perfect candidates for martially inclined Chapters -Feral Worlds, while not as deadly, the population has managed to maintain primitive level of technology.
-Feudal Worlds, population maintains medieval level of technology, while usually less martial than populations of Feral or Death Worlds, their population is more numerous, allowing for larger number of recruits
-Hive Worlds, with a population of billions and majority of it living in harsh urban environment inside the Hive Spires, they can produce good recruits. It is not uncommon for the Chapter to capture whole gangs already used to fighting and test them for recruits.

These four world types are the most valuable for Space Marine Chapters. While Civilized Worlds or Industrial Worlds can produce recruits, they usually require hundreds or thousands of years of martial and militaristic background.

Some sources are seen nearly unrecruitable or unwanted completely. Those born in space stations or aboard ships, the so called Voidborn, have been living their whole lives in low gravity and under the watchful eyes of Ships security and armsmen. In rare cases Voidborn are recruited, but the number of potential recruits is very low.

There are few other options, but they are generally seen to skirt close to tech heresy so they aren’t talked about.

    Nice update

What I miss somewhat is some idea of the recruiting opportunities in this sector - which was a major chapter goal in previous updates ?

IF we improve our standing with the various factions we could potentially recruit here ? Or not ?

“So what you are suggesting that we scurry away in shame while the vile xenos and worshippers of Chaos rampage across the Imperium?” Veteran Sergeant Tigrus asked with anger in his voice. “Where is your faith DeChevalier.”

A final glance was given to Veteran Sergeant Tigrus before you ended the council.
Take a moment to informally talk with Tigrus outside of the council later.

"Worshippers of Chaos and Xenos appear to be few in this sector Tigrus, indeed the Admiral appears to be in denial in regard to their very existence - we have Orcs and Pirates, but I suggest we continue to collect intelligence on our surroundings untill we find an opportunity to apply our limited resources with maximum efficiency."

"In the meantime I suggest we build our reputation and keep an eye out for opportunities to grow our numbers."

    Gunboat Diplomacy
By travelling between the world, escorting merchant vessels and looking for pirates and other threats, you see a possibility to strengthen the Imperiums hold on the Sector. By showing Planetary Governors and traders that Angels of Death are here, actually patrolling and defending them, it would remind them that Imperium as a whole is united and not fractured or weak. Librarium has estimated that while fighting isn’t likely, it can still happen. They also see that this is a great chance to collect even more information on what is going on in the Sector.

QM: Favours should be used at start of a new turn. So I would say that you don't have time this turn. But you can discuss on what to use them or you could save them for later as Favours don't disappear. Plan a little.

    Aboard Strike Cruiser Magnificent
    In XA-511 system
    Turn 1 Part 4

    Decisions:
    -Choose the overall plan
-Through independence rest, through rest recovery!

-Choose what to do with Emerald Dream
-Escort the Emerald Dream to Imperial Navy for their safekeeping
-Leave the cargo alone and deliver it to Administratum

“We are not in a position to participate in the heaviest fighting nor in operations that have high possibility of casualties. Half a Company of Space Marines even if they are veterans, is not enough. We need to rebuild and recover for some time.” You said.

“So what you are suggesting that we scurry away in shame while the vile xenos and worshippers of Chaos rampage across the Imperium?” Veteran Sergeant Tigrus asked with anger in his voice. “Where is your faith DeChevalier.”

“My faith! Don’t talk about faith to me Tigrus. Faith or no faith, a stray shell kills you either way. You must realize our situation Tigrus, if we were to be decimated even further, we would have to wait even longer to rebuild. We have to choose our fights carefully and not throw ourselves into the fray without a reason.”

You give a stern glance to everyone across the room before continuing.

“Yes, we shall fight, but we shall do it in our terms on not on the terms of our enemies. We need to choose fights were we can make a difference with our limited resources. We need to extinguish the fires before they turn into raging infernos. This is the decision, we will scurry away in shame if it means that our Chapter will survive, but we will not allow enemies of the Imperium to live!”

A final glance was given to Veteran Sergeant Tigrus before you ended the council.

As Techmarines and maintenance crews repaired Emerald Dream, Master of Sanctity Capon lead roaming bands of priests blessing and purifying the vessel, Captain Valerian studied the pict-feeds from the boarding with Captain Grafft and Veteran Sergeant Fulk. While the boarding action was done by the numbers and Chapter Master DeChevalier had complimented the action, Valerian felt that there was room to improve. They had even a few times put the boarding teams together and redid the boarding to have practical training and to see how things really went. Both Captains agreed that there was still a lot to be done and even the veterans of the Chapter required more training.

It took the work crews several weeks to get Emerald Dream working. The main plasma engine had been sabotaged and fixing it required delicate and careful work. Thankfully the damage wasn’t bad and they got the engine back up and running.

And as you got Emerald Dream working it was time to depart the XA-511 system as it was called in the Emerald Dreams star maps. Same time you had made the decision to return her and the cargo back. While you could benefit from keeping them as it is your right, you felt that delivering them would help the Imperium more and would show you in a good light.

Warp Travel and Exiting Roll: 56

The first destination was a world named Karlean, a Civilized World in same Subsector as the Sector capital Vectus. There were some problems for the Emerald Dream to do the Warp Jump, but nothing major as all four ships exited safely into the system. The sudden arrival of a Adeptus Astartes Strike Cruiser caused some confusion in the Imperial Navy ratings and adepts responsible of communications, especially when the Strike Cruiser asked where to deliver some trade cargo.

It took several times for you to say it again before they understood, you really had cargo to deliver. The Administratum clerks responsible of receiving it first complained that the cargo was several months late, but they quickly realized what had happened and a Chapter Master of Space Marine Chapter personally delivering the cargo to them made an impression. They thanked for delivering the cargo and that they owed you one as Karlean heavy industry required it so that the planet can deliver their Tithe.

It took two weeks for the Administratum cargo haulers and dropships to unload the cargo aboard Emerald Dream. Meanwhile you stayed on board Magnificent as for some reason the Planetary Governor didn’t want to meet you and the Administratum Prefect was too busy to meet you more than once, the sudden intake of the Emerald Dreams cargo had made his schedule busy.

Warp Travel and Exiting Roll: 96

Leaving Karlean, you jumped to the Sector Capital. Arriving to the Vectus System you were greeted by a pair of Sword-class frigates of Imperial Navy who escorted you to the high orbit around Vectus where a pair of Lunar-class cruisers maintained a healthy distance from you. Suddenly you were hailed from one of them with identifying code belonging to Imperial Navy Admiral.

“This is Lord Admiral Therezan of Battlefleet Vectus speaking. What does the Butchers of Lehmann’s Grave do here? And yes your reputation has preceded you, we know your past Knights Twilight.”

The mention of the purging of Imperial Guard hundred years ago would have made lesser man flinch, but you are Adeptus Astartes, a Space Marine. A mere mention of a purge doesn’t cause you to react. Still it was still a bit uneasy, seems that the tales have travelled far and wide.

A tall, lanky man with a bald head had appeared on one of the screens. He had on his Admirals uniform enough medals to cause a weaker man buckle, but Lord Admiral Therezan stood with his back straight and pride in his eyes. For a moment you thought that he would fall on his back from the weight of the medals, but that sadly didn’t happen.

“I am Chapter Master DeChevalier of Knights Twilight. What we are doing here is to deliver cargo ship Emerald Dream to your care. We found it derelict after her crew had mutinied and turned worshipping the Ruinous Gods of Chaos.”

The mention of Chaos made the Lord Admiral to raise his eyebrow a bit before he put on his blank face, but for a moment he reacted and you saw it.

“We boarded the vessel and brought it under our control. At the moment a skeleton crew from our Strike Cruiser Magnificent is operating it. If you want to know more, we will send our investigations to you Lord Admiral.”

“We don’t need your reports Chapter Master, there hasn’t been a single case of Chaos piracy or renegades this close to the heart of the Sector since Vectus Crusade of M.38. So cease your accusations of heresy Chapter Master. I don’t have time for this farce.”

With that Lord Admiral Therezans screen turned to black and the transmission ended.

“I don’t think he likes us Chapter Master.” Said Chief Librarian Gotch with sarcasm in his voice as he had joined you on the bridge. “Dismissing the reports of Chaos that easily, he is a blind man.”

“Liking or not liking, we will send the report to him.” You murmured back.

It took a few minutes for a new face to appear on the screen. This one much younger and with a lot less medals on his chest.

“I am Captain Dober, Adjutant of Lord Admiral Therezan. I am sorry my Lord for my Lord Admirals behavior, he doesn’t take accusations of Chaos so close to Vectus easily.”

“Thank you Captain Dober, it is not a rare reaction. I have seen many deny what me and my brothers have witnessed before, be it a Planetary Governor or Admiral of Imperial Navy.” You say back to him.

“I take that we are even now. But you had a ship to deliver to us.” Captain Dober said to you.

“Yes. Emerald Dream, a cargo ship with a length of 1,5 kilometres. We deliver her cargo to Karlean and now we are giving the ship you as we denounce our right for the Prize.”

“I see, we shall take the vessel under our care and try to find her rightful owner then. Under the traditions of Battlefleet Vectus, we do not let things go unrewarded. If you need something to be done, please go ahead and contact us. Lord Admiral might not like you, but he is a man of honour and will respect any favours we are due. We will transfer our crew aboard the vessel and take her into her command. One more thing Chapter Master, I would suggest for you to leave after your men are back on your Strike Cruiser. Lord Admiral most likely doesn’t like you staying here for too long.”

Captain Dober did the sign of Aquila on his chest and bowed before the feed was cut.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

In only took them a day to find a crew for Emerald Dream and to ship them aboard her. Meanwhile you had used your authority as Chapter Master to ask for recent intelligence from Administratum and Imperial Navy regarding any threats within the Sector. While Navy didn’t give you much, it was enough when you combined it with the logs taken from Emerald Dream to give you a picture of the Sectors current situation.

Sector Vectus can be divided into three categories. The Inner Sector has the economic and political powerhouses of the Sector. The so called Triumvirate has total power here. Inner Sector is in relatively good shape, with only few threats in form of minor Ork populations. Pirates and renegades rarely or never venture this deep into the Sector, but the fate of Emerald Dream worries you.

Next comes Subsectors who are important at supporting the Triumvirate worlds. These Subsectors are relatively safe, but sometimes pirates and Orks manage to raid the relatively secure trade routes. The biggest threat in this region is the Tenaria system which has large Ork population. The Orks are kept in check and potential shipyards on the planets are bombarded from the orbit every few years. Outside source of Ork warships could cause a massive WAAAGH! which could be devastating for the Sector.

Finally outside these Subsectors there are a number of worlds, systems and regions of note. They include poor colonies, dangerous frontier worlds, places controlled by Orks and other xenos. It is a wilderness, a space without a proper control.

Deciding to keep the distance from Imperium proper and seeing that Lord Admiral Therezan doesn’t want you around, you looked at the worlds outside the Sector heart and checked the latest reports acquired from Imperial Navy. With the pirate and Ork raids having increased in numbers and the case of Emerald Dream, several options to act were there.

    Havia Ork Extermination
Civilized World of Havia has had a small Ork problem for hundreds of years. Every few years the local Planetary Defence Force and Imperial Guard Regiments have dealt with the Orks before they have grown in numbers. Lately Havia has been stripped off their experienced Imperial Guard Regiments and what remains isn’t enough to properly hunt down the Orks who have taken advantage of this and are approaching the critical mass for successful Warboss to take control and start a proper war against humans. By deploying Knights Twilight there, the local PDF would have considerable force multiplier on their side and the Orks could be beaten back and destroyed. Librarium considers this option to have heaviest fighting, but ending the threat before it starts would save up local forces and wouldn’t require shipping Regiments from off-world to save the situation.

    Hunting Pirates
Instead of just escorting merchant vessels and looking for threats, you are actively hunting for them. By jumping into systems known for having pirate attacks, going deep into the uncontrolled space to find them. By actively poking the hornets nest to get them to come at you, the plan is to destroy the threat directly. Librarium estimates that without proper information finding pirates will be hard, but from what is known from the attacks, Magnificent and her escorts are more than enough to beat the potential pirates.

    Ranging the Deep Space
Knowing that the regions outside of the Imperial control are relatively uncontrolled and that there are areas that are still unmapped. While Rogue Traders would protest that you are doing their job, you aren’t there to gather wealth, but to map and patrol the space beyond borders of Imperial space. Librarium sees this action having a lot of things they can’t predict. Ranging beyond Ulian system and Bastion Vonmeer into Veiled Nebula and elsewhere into Wilderness Space can be dangerous as you have no idea what there is, but with high risk comes high reward.

    Decisions:
    -Choose an action
    -Havia Ork Extermination
    -Gunboat Diplomacy
    -Hunting Pirates
    -Ranging the Deep Space

    Events:
    -Gained Minor Favour from Administratum
-Gained Minor Favour from Imperial Navy

QM: Finally we are nearly out of what I consider tutorial. Choose one as what to do. Each choice will have positive and negative effects on the Sector. I will update the Google Doc after this update or tomorrow. Biggest update is the important Sector worlds and some of the relationship stuff. Will have to explanation on what you can spend favours outside Adeptus Mechanicus.

Edit. All updates done. New things are Sector information, more stuff on favours and Imperial Navy Shipyard Prices.

The Brief History of Knights Twilight

The exact origin of Knights Twilight is shrouded in mystery as they first appeared in Imperial records in M.32 during a conflict against Orks near the galactic center. After the mysterious Space Marine fleet had arrived in the orbit, they quickly deployed their forces and in quick succession decapitated the Ork leadership and decimated their forces. Just as quickly they appeared, the mysterious Space Marines left after taking supplies and thousands of surviving civilians with them. After this more similar appearances have been found in the records.

Imperial scholars and adepts had studied the pattern of the sudden arrivals and managed to find out that they happened in approximately 20 year cycles. It was theorized that the mystery Space Marines whose insignia or colour scheme didn’t match any known pattern, required more supplies and recruits, and that they used these carefully planned appearances as a way to resupply and prevent their destruction. This caused Inquisition to have interest on them, but due to these mysterious Space Marines didn’t attack Imperial forces, not much was done to catch them.

It took till M.34 during so called Taberran Incident where the mysterious Space Marines were caught in a conflict against Death Guard traitors. This conflict lasted long enough for large Imperial Navy Battlefleet and dozen Imperial Guard regiments to arrive. The Space Marines not wanting to disengage from the fight, finished the Death Guard and then tried to leave. This was too late and a standoff between the Chapter Fleet and Imperial Navy Battlefleet happened. Not wanting to fire upon Imperial forces, the Space Marines for the first time declared who they are openly and named themselves Knights Twilight.

After Taberran Incident, Knights Twilight acted more openly and ended what they themselves called “Splendid Isolation”. Many times Knights Twilight came, destroyed their enemies and left with new recruits and supplies.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

For Knights Twilight their early history is a partial mystery too. They do not know who their Primarch is and when exactly the Chapter was founded. From the time of their founding only few tales have survived that are passed from generation to generation. With Knights Twilight having lost their flagship twice in their history and with the loss of Agathy recently, a large portion of the Librarium records have been lost as well.

Their first Chapter Master Garl Jarrah was said to be a Techmarine before he was elevated into the position. It is not known why he was chosen over others. The first Chapter Masters hailed from Techmarines and not until M.35 first Chapter Master that wasn’t a Techmarine was chosen. After Age of Apostasy the Chapter integrated with Imperium proper and acted like most fleet-based Chapters.

The Chapter would gain Agathy in M.38 as their Homeworld after successfully clearing the Sector from Xenos and Heretics. Due to the heavy casualties they took and seeing that the region should have permanent Adeptus Astartes presence, The High Lords of Terra decided to award the Agathy System to Knights Twilight. From Agathy the Chapter operated till the world was destroyed during the Downfall.

During more recent history, one of the most controversial actions of the Chapter was done. In 832.M41 they found out that Imperial Guard regiment had turned to Chaos, but didn’t yet show their true colours. Before allowing this to happen, Knights Twilight destroyed the regiment. From what remained they found out that several other regiments harboured heretics or were already completely turned to Chaos. Knights Twilight hunted down those regiments and destroyed them too. This incident nearly caused Inquisition to declare them Excommunicate Traitoris, but after showing the evidence of the heresy within Imperial Guard, they were allowed to go. But the damage to their reputation had been done, there are still Inquisitors who believe that Knights Twilights should be Excommunicated and Imperial Guard leadership don’t believe that such a high number of them could turn traitors without anyone noticing.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Knights Twilight when they still were fleet-based Chapter, was known for their planetary invasions and deploying directly into battle with drop-pods and Thunderhawks. The Chapter was also known for their large Chapter Fleet which allowed them to clear enemy vessels away before launching the invasion. After gaining Agathy the Chapter became more well rounded and started to follow Codex Astartes more closely.

Through the Chapters existence heavy emphasis has been put on personal fighting prowess. This has been accomplished by hard training and giving individual Space Marines tools they require to destroy their enemies. Due to that it is common to see Battle Brother carrying a chainsword and a bolt pistol on their belt as their sidearms to complement bolter. Many times has a squad fought till they have ran out of bolter ammunition, switching to bolt pistol which runs out of ammunition and finally relying on the chainsword till its teeth fall out.

    ++Thought of the Day++
The keenest blade is righteous hatred.

QM: Chapter history that I wrote before I even made the game, just edited a bit to have the more recent developments in it. Not really anything super important, but something that gives some light about the Chapters history.

I will start writing the update proper later this week, so it should come out on Sunday or early next week.

Edit. And I completely forgot to answer your first question Snowy. Vectus Prime is the capital world of the Sector. Emerald Dream was going to Karlean, a Civilized World within Subsector Vectus. Both locations are relatively near each other. When next update hits, I will have updated the Google Doc with important worlds within the Sector.

We have enough minor favors for a Hunter. We can also station Armsmen aboard Magnificent and transport them to a Hunter and send them on Boarding Torpedoes. It gives us a little flexibility.

QM: You sadly lack space for more Thunderhawks. Magnificents hangars are already 6/6. I will be going with 4 normal Thunderhawks and 2 Transporters are enough to transport single company and their equipment on the ground. In the lore exact number of Thunderhawks or their squadron sizes aren't discussed so this will do.

Crews will be automatically replenished when visiting friendly worlds. Of course a new colony might not have many willing to join, while hive world will be extremely good place to acquire crews if the nobles and governor allows it. New ships of course come with trained crews.

Magnificent has boarding torpedoes and the Thunderhawks can land on enemy vessels or fly into their hangars, but the Thunderhawks themselves lack equipment to breach the enemy ship to unload their cargo.

I haven't yet decided how to go with exchanging favours between factions. With Administratum, Imperial Navy and Adeptus Mechanicus are very independent and self-reliant organisations with wild rivalries between them, they might completely disagree on cashing in the favours.

While it is Administratum that handles the Tithes and controls the worlds through their bureaucracy, I can say that a single Minor Favour isn't enough for them to allow you to start permanently recruiting from single world. It requires a lot of paperwork, planning, reorganising to find new sources for the lost Tithe.

In the next big update I will give more information about the Sector and the worlds. Then you have more possible stuff to do.

Edit. Quick primer on the 3 Space Marine escorts due to writing is fun.

-Gladius is heavily armoured and very sturdy escort. It has set of light macro cannons as her armament. Chief advantages of Gladius over Imperial Navy equivalent vessel Sword-class frigate are increased speed and armour. Otherwise they are quite similar in their roles as gun-boats.

-Hunter just like Gladius is both more heavily armoured and faster than Imperial Navy equivalent vessel Cobra-class destroyer. Hunters are armed with two torpedo tubes and defensive array of light macro cannons. In gun fight they will lose to others easily, but when deployed as torpedo-boats they can inflict heavy damage when acting in squadrons. Hunter can use boarding torpedoes to send a platoon of armsmen into combat (Space Marines are usually too valuable to be stationed aboard escorts)

-Nova is the only lance bearing vessel in Space Marine fleets. Just like other ships, it is both faster and better armoured than equivalent Firestorm-class frigate. Lances are very accurate and can punch through armour easily. Novas are not liked by Imperial Navy or by Inquisition due to they encroach into the territory of the Navy. But they are very potent escorts and worth acquiring and using if fighting enemy warships is common.

It appears we can trade in the ship and cargo for two minor favors. With two minor favors we could get four Thunderhawk gunships and four ThunderHawk transports. The main problem I see in obtaining more ships is putting a crew on them. Our crew is already short handed. We did not have a way to transport boarding parties to the derelict. Would Thunderhawk Transports be able to board space vessels?

Or we can go with one Escort vessel for two minor favors? The Hunter carries torpedoes which we can use to board other vessels. A Gladius is faster than the Imperial Fleet equivalent.

We can also try to cash in one Minor Favor for four Thunderhawks and access to a world we could recruit from? This is not mentioned in the google docs, but if we don't use the favors we lose them.

I like this general strategy :

-Through independence rest, through rest recovery! Supporters of this plan suggest that by maintaining a healthy distance from heaviest fighting and Imperium as a whole allows the Chapter to rebuild their numbers before going back into the fray. This plan depends on fighting only if you can benefit from it or not take major losses. Conserving power while cultivating it. Captain Grafft and Veteran Sergeant Kastor are chief supporters of this plan.
Coupled with escorting the Emerald Dream to a Imperial Navy base for their safekeeping and delivering the cargo to Administratum.

The Adeptus Administratum, often referred to simply as the Administratum, is the administrative and bureaucratic division of the Adeptus Terra, the heart of the gigantic bureaucracy that controls the government of the Imperium of Man, consisting…....
This is also more likely to take us someplace which may turn out to be a good recruiting ground, and prop up our standing with the locals a bit, without immediately joining one faction or other.

Also it gives us the chance to scout our surroundings, so when we do commit ourselves, we don't do so blindly.

The Navigator told that five months ago suddenly the ship’s power was cut and when the captain had sent his loyal armsmen to see what caused this, they were quickly shot by the rest of the crew. A heresy had spread across the it and a mutiny had started.
we have managed to restore power and in few weeks we should be able to get the ship moving by transferring a skeleton crew from Magnificent. After that with the help of her Navigator, we can warp jump it to friendly system.
but now according to the ship’s charts you were currently in a Sector Vectus which was located north-east of Storm of the Emperor’s Wrath, deep in the galactic north.
As to our current situation, what we managed to find from Emerald Dream databanks, the Sector Vectus has been rather calm, but in recent years ships have been disappearing or getting attacked by pirates or renegades more often than before. Also it does seem that Orks have also spread here in large numbers. What the ship’s Navigator said, the Battlefleet Vectus has increased patrols, but they are woefully under equipped for large scale patrolling. Vectus still stands, but predictions and simulations have shown increased instability in the future if the threats aren’t taken care of.”
Complement Valerius on the boarding action which went down flawlessly.

Do I take it then there is a planet "Vectus" near our current location where the trade ship came from ?

Have we been able to determine its destination ?

Either place would be a logical next destination for us from here.

QM: Space Marines rarely if not ever dabble in trade. Especially as it would be heavily outside what Space Marines do. In addition it would be a huge step into the rights of Chartist Captains and Rogue Traders who do majority of the trade. Also I won't be going into trading in this game as it would be a hassle to keep track of. Selling the ship would also be outside the game.

Both of your questions are covered with the Favour system. Technically by the Prize law the ship and the cargo are yours, but if you were to return them to Imperial Navy or Administratum, you would gain Favours that can be used to acquire things.

So in this scenario you can acquire two Minor Favours, one earmarked from Imperial Navy and one from Administratum.

Check Forge World Ship Production Costs from the Google Doc to see common Favour costs when dealing with Adeptus Mechanicus.

Basically Favours come in 3 types. Minor Favours are earned by going beyond your standard duty or helping certain people a lot. Minor Favour could be gained by giving ships you have captured to Inperial Navy or by lending a squad of Space Marines for Planetary Governor.

Major Favours are big undertakings. For example capturing an Eldar capital ship and bringing it to Adeptus Mechanicus would be one. Major Favours are much rarer.

Blood and Honourbound Favours are extremely rare and often involve agreements and pacts from thousands of years ago.

I will give you options to earn favours during the game and it is possible to "farm" favours by doing them repeatedly. Of course you might not always get minor favour, especially if you have done same thing repeatedly, but even then people appreciate it.

To sum it up, I would like to find out how much we could get for selling the cargo, or selling the ship and cargo. How much would getting a transport or escort vessel would cost? How many favors and minor favors could we earn?

We also need access to a planet with people we can recruit.

QM: A long post of lore and your current situation where you are. These decisions presented will influence the possibilities of the Chapter heavily and how the rest of the Sector Vectus will react. All four overall plans have their positives and negatives. The idea is that they influence what events and which direction I will push the game. Even I as a QM need some redline to follow, because there is a story to be told. The decision isn’t a railroad, but more of a start of line of events. Even if you decide one, you can move away from it if you want. You can also combine aspects of the plans for one that you feel more suitable.

Emerald Dream in turn is a way to teach you about direct benefits and additions to the Chapter and long term benefits in terms of possible Favours gained. I can say that by keeping the ship opens future possibilities to use it or convert it to gain different bonuses. Giving her and the cargo back to Imperial Navy and Administratum will give you Minor Favour from both of them. They can be used for different things.

Depending on your choices I will update the Google docs later and we can continue Turn 1 as year still has about 11 months remaining.

    Aboard Strike Cruiser Magnificent
    In unknown system
    Turn 1 Part 3

    Decisions:
    -Investigate the ship
-Send boarding party (How many members, who leads them)
    -Captain Valerian
    -1st Company Champion The Penitent
    -Captain Grafft+Apothecary+8 Space Marines
    -Veteran Sergeant Fulk+9 Space Marines
The vox opened with a crack of static. The naval ratings aboard the bridge monitored the frequencies for anything and one of them signaled to you that everything was ready.

“This is Chapter Master DeChevalier of Knights Twilight Strike Cruiser Magnificent. Does anyone copy?”

You allowed a short pause as the ratings continued to monitor. You continued after one of them shook his head at you.

“I say again, do you copy? We are going to investigate your ship if you don’t answer.”

    Again the ratings signaled negative.

“My Lord, there is nothing that would indicate that the ship is transmitting anything. They might hear us if they are listening, but that is a big if.” Said the rating.

    You answered with a nod.

    “Prepare the boarding team.”

The prow torpedo room was bustling with activity as Captain Valerian was organizing the boarding to happen. Teleporting in would be too dangerous so boarding torpedo was chosen. It had been a while since he participated in one and while he was glad it wasn’t against Tyranids like last time, going into a derelict vessel is always dangerous. Watching the two squads boarding the torpedo, he had made sure that they were equipped with gear fitting for the mission.

The 1st Squad led by Captain Grafft of 10th Company was all given Combat Shields and the first set of five Errant Armour, while the 2nd Squad led by Veteran Sergeant Fulk had to go with the standard gear. Finally Master of the Forges Vero had given both squads few magazines of specialized ammunition just in case. Valerian was bit surprised when DeChevalier had chosen these two, but he presumed this was a test to see how well Grafft can act in an environment like this and most likely Astor had some plans for Fulk.

As everyone had boarded, Grafft send him a short message informing that everything was ready. With that Valerian nodded to The Penitent, who followed him just like his shadow, just a few feet behind him, and boarded the torpedo.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Magnificent is an old vessel. It is not known how old actually, but most educated guesses date it pre-Heresy. Recovered from a space hulk now long forgotten, it has been part of the Knights Twilight from at least M.33. Due to its unusual origin story, Magnificent is armed by a different set of weapons compared to normal Strike Cruisers. Magnificent has six Mars-pattern torpedo tubes on its prow, a set of bombardment cannons on its dorsal mounts and Lathe-pattern landing bay on both sides. Her Teleportarium is also capable of launching devastating Lighting Strikes, if the enemy Void Shields are down, by teleporting a team of elite troops inside the enemy vessel to cause damage and then teleporting them back to safety. Compared to a normal Strike Cruiser, Magnificent has a lot of ordnance in form of the torpedoes and Thunderhawks in the landing bays.

Operations like this are Magnificents forte. As the single boarding torpedo left its tube, a squadron of Thunderhawks appeared on its flanks and escorted it to the target. The distance launched was nearly extreme, which normally would be a problem due to the target moving in three-dimensions, but a derelict vessel sitting still was an easy target for the boarding torpedo to hit. Just as planned, it struck the cargo ship close to one of the shuttle bays and with a bright flash the melta charges burned through the hull of the ship like power sword through flesh. In an instant, the boarders inside rushed forward and entered the ship.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Captain Valerian had ordered Veteran Sergeant Fulk to take control of the shuttle bay and find a way to open its door to allow Thunderhawk extraction and to block any attempts for the enemy to try to flee the vessel. He himself had followed Captain Grafft as his squad slowly, but steadily advanced inside the ship towards the bridge.

It was eerily quiet, not a single soul, not a single sight of life. From what Valerian and Grafft saw, nothing had changed in a few months in the ship from the amount of dust on objects. Even the atmosphere had leaked slowly away, leaving the innards of the ship to the cold embrace of space.

Finally closer to the ships innards you got, you found something that you didn’t want to find. There was blood on the floor. Grafft quickly examined it and stood back up.

“How the blood has spread implies that someone was killed here. The strange thing is that the body is missing and it looks like it was tried to remove as much blood as possible. What blood remains has been here for several months” He said.

“With everyone missing it could be Dark Eldar Corsairs who had struck, but the blood? I don’t know. I haven’t seen anything like this before.” Valerian said back to Grafft. “Please lead on.”

As the party moved closer to the bridge there were more cases like this. One corridor was completely covered in blood splatters that were tried to remove. And finally just before the bridge was what they were waiting for. Marks of a brief gun fight, bullet holes in the walls, scorch marks on the floor, but yet again bodies and most of the blood removed.

As you had reached the bridge door, Veteran Sergeant Fulk messaged that he had reached the hangar. He didn’t have seen anyone, only several pools of dried blood without bodies. The few landing craft in the hangar were also there, the crews apparently having disappeared mid maintenance. He would try to get the hangar door open to allow Thunderhawk extraction.

The door was closed and thankfully the heavy blast doors were still open. Getting access to the bridge was much easier this way.

“Captain Grafft, please open the door.” Valerian ordered and Grafft acknowledged it with a nod.

With just a few hand waves from Grafft, his squad prepared for a breach on both sides of the door. Two of the Marines on signal started to push the door open, but it didn’t want to move, it was stuck. Pushing with all of their strength, finally the door started to open with a shriek. The way it opened didn’t exactly go as planned as left door opened too quickly and the Marine pushing it fell down on the bridge floor.

What you saw didn’t come as a surprise. The scene on the bridge continued with the theme that you saw earlier. Dried pools of blood that were tried to wash away, but no bodies.

“My auspex shows nothing.” Said the Marine carrying the portable auspex scanner.

Grafft quickly silenced him by raising his hand and gave orders for the squad to spread out. He signaled that someone was sitting on the Captains throne. Without further orders it was The Penitent who acted. With few mighty strides he had closed the distance between the chair and him. With final quick step he darted in front of the throne pointing his sword at the person on the throne. All of you were prepared to shoot the throne and whatever was on it to pieces, but how The Penitent relaxed his posture before stepping away made you to realise that the danger was over.

You approached the throne and saw what was on it. A long dead corpse of what seemed to be the ship's captain. What was worrying was that the head of the corpse was flayed and the eight-pointed star of Chaos was crudely carved on it.

“Now we know why there were no one here. The work of Chaos.” Valerian muttered. “Captain Grafft, inform Fulk and Magnificent of our findings. We still have to find what is still missing, our prey.”

The news of Chaos didn’t make Chapter Master or rest of the Chapter jump with joy, but it was a relief in one way. Now it was known why the ship was empty. Chief Librarian Gotch couldn’t immediately say what had happened, but they were going to go through the Librariums records for anything similar to this.

Soon Grafft found their prey. What Gotch had managed to find wasn’t anything dangerous, not a daemon or devious race of xenos, but just the ship’s Navigator who was scared of his life and had hid himself by using his own psychic powers. The Navigator had hid inside his sealed Sanctum and survived by eating emergency rations. The Navigator was from a rather poor and unfortunate family of Navigators. Horribly mutated and rightfully considered as freaks by everyone else, his family had for long decided that staying out of sight and just doing their jobs was best for them. This had inadvertently saved his life.

The Navigator told that five months ago suddenly the ship’s power was cut and when the captain had sent his loyal armsmen to see what caused this, they were quickly shot by the rest of the crew. A heresy had spread across the it and a mutiny had started. Quickly those loyal or resisting were killed and at that point the Navigator decided to hide thanks to his powers. Few days later, everyone just disappeared. The scariest part was the Navigator didn’t feel anything, no movement in warp that would indicate another ship. So when Magnificent and her escorts arrived, he hid again, not knowing who was coming. And now he was thankful for saving his life, his family would be eternally grateful for this.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

After several days of staying near the cargo ship as it was being investigated. Librarium had bad news. While they didn’t find anything like this from their records, a sudden disappearance of the crew could indicate that they used some dark ritual or a spell was done on them from afar that transported them elsewhere. With even a cargo ship holding easily ten thousand people and the passengers, there was now a large number of Imperial citizens at the hands of the heretics and they could be used for their own rituals as sacrifices or even turned to serve their dark gods.

As Librarium went through their records, Magnificents Techmarines and techpriests worked over to restore the power to the cargo ship. While the heretics had managed to sabotage the plasma engines, Master of the Forge Vero managed to restore them and with that they could start restoring life support and most importantly allowing access to the ships databanks.

The ship Emerald Dream from the cargo logs wasn’t carrying anything special or anything you could directly put to use, but it did have quite large cargo of plasteel and other important metals used in making weapons to modular housing. What surprised you was the date the ship’s cogitators had shut down and taking into account what the Navigator had said, only a month had passed since the Downfall and your emergency jump into the warp. While you spent eight months stranded in the warp, only month had gone elsewhere. Gotch wasn’t surprised about this, as time inside immaterium flows differently.

Final thing worth of note was the heaviest one. Your former homeworld of Agathy had located south of the Maelstorm near the center of the galaxy, but now according to the ship’s charts you were currently in a Sector Vectus which was located north-east of Storm of the Emperor’s Wrath, deep in the galactic north.

The effect of this revelation was tragic to the Battle Brothers as many hoped that where they end up wouldn’t be that far. It took them a few days to get used to the idea, but in the end even all accepted the situation. For a moment Chaplain Capon was worried and he privately expressed his feelings to you that heavier monitoring should be used for now on, at least for some time. Even a Space Marine who shouldn’t feel no fear can be mentally broken.

You had called the veterans of the Chapter for a council to help you decide what to do in the future. While democracy wasn’t a thing in Space Marine Chapters, it had been seen useful by your predecessors to seldom call forth a council to allow veterans to say their opinions and allow them to feel that they are listened to. In the end it was still your choice and your choice only.

“Librarium stands behind whatever you Chapter Master. We are ready to continue our service to the Emperor and the Imperium as a whole. Vectus still stands, but predictions and simulations have shown increased instability in the future if the threats aren’t taken care of.” Said Chief Librarian Gotch. It was Master of the Forges Vero who spoke next.

“Chapter Master, the Forges are currently working on Land Speeder Tornado and a single suit of Errant Armour. While our production capabilities are quite minimal, we can in the long run produce what is needed by the Chapter. But if our numbers were to grow, Magnificent Forge is too small. On the subject of Emerald Dream, we have managed to restore power and in few weeks we should be able to get the ship moving by transferring a skeleton crew from Magnificent. After that with the help of her Navigator, we can warp jump it to friendly system. Outside that, Forges are yours to command.” Master of the Forges Vero told everyone in the room.

“Apothecarion has started the implantation process and all 24 Gene-seed we had has been successfully implanted in the test-slaves carefully chosen from a number of volunteers from Magnificents crew and our Chapter Serfs. In five years 24 Gene-seed can be harvested and in ten years 24 more.” Chief Apothecary Karrack said.

“And it would be great if I could get some recruits in two to three years so that when they are ready Apothecarion could implanting the Gene-seed into them. We need the recruits for our future.” 10th Company Captain Grafft quickly told the room after what Karrack had said.

“So five years for the Gene-seed.” Mused 1st Company Captain Valerian. “If we were to be successful we need to have a long term plan what we should do and how we shall act. I know me and my brothers are conflicted on this, but here are what we have managed to think about.”

Captain Valerian had in advance to the council prepared possible scenarios and who supports them. First three had more or less equal support among the veterans, with the last one being in clear minority. He had also prepared a few other decisions.

-Reconcile with the Imperium to show our loyalty! It is better for the Chapter to show their face after devastation like this than act like nothing had happened. While everyone knows the stories of Chapters who had taken terrible casualties being disbanded, supporters of this plan believe that by openly stating the situation and then showing the loyalty by going into combat will avoid the disbanding of the Chapter that is possible. Captain Valerian is the chief supporter of this plan.

-Maintain our independence, but act in the Emperor’s name! Supporters of this plan believe that it is better to show the loyalty of the Chapter with deeds and not by words. Slaying the alien and the heretic benefits the Imperium more than words. By maintaining high operational tempo, plans supporters see this helping the Imperium and the Chapter most. Veteran Sergeants Tigrus and Inokus are the chief supporters of this plan.

-Through Crusade Salvation! This plan has the least support of the four plans. Supporters of this plan wants the Chapter to launch a Crusade to in which the target is their former homeworld Agathy and the opposition whatever is between the current location and the target. By showing loyalty of the Chapter through faith and action, the Chapter can and will recover. Veteran Sergeant Fulk is the chief supporter of this plan

In addition to these four plans, the fate of the Emerald Dream and her cargo is in your hands. The ancient Prize law says that whoever captures or salvages a derelict vessel is granted the ownership of it. Due to this Rogue Traders can make a fortune out of vessels like Emerald Dream, not necessarily by using it, but by either selling it or by returning it to the ships former owner.

You could keep the ship as it could be an important addition the Chapter Fleet and would allow transporting more supplies or it could be converted to some other auxiliary role. You could also escort it back friendly world and leave under the care the Imperial Navy. Same thing with her cargo. You could use it by yourself or you could deliver it for the Administratum.

    Decisions:
    -Choose the overall plan
-Reconcile with the Imperium to show our loyalty!
-Maintain our independence, but act in the Emperor’s name!
-Through independence rest, through rest recovery!
    -Through Crusade Salvation!
    -Other?

-Choose what to do with Emerald Dream
-Keep the Emerald Dream and add it to the Chapter Fleet
-Escort the Emerald Dream to Imperial Navy for their safekeeping
-Abandon the ship as it is not worth anything to you

-Keep the cargo for your own use (+100BP next turn)
-Leave the cargo alone and deliver it to Administratum
