The Gene-seed farming by using test-slaves is accepted process when creating a new Chapter or if the Chapter has suffered very bad losses and requires rebuilding. It is not ideal solution, but it can be done.

Also the Primaris appear first in 999.41 so it is still 56 years to them. And you don't even know that they exist. Gotch suggestion is noted and he along with Librarium should get to work when you finally get out of the blasted warp (and the Turn 0 ends)

While true, this is typically done by Chapters only once given sanction to do so, or as you mention by the Adeptus Mechanicus who have ongoing sanction to do so as required, and as we know all Foundings are controlled and permitted only by the High Lords of Terra.

My apologies. I did not realize the time discrepancy. I assumed we were "current" in the timeframe.

I think I can safely agree that we have "suffered very bad losses and require rebuilding", but I feel that if we simply accepted no new Marines between now and the end of our regeneration program the only responsible course would be to withdraw from open engagement for that time, which is not an option I can in good conscience favour.

And if we happen to inherit a number of larger, faster Space Marines born of our primarch's geneseed in 56 years or so, well.. the Emperor Protects his own.

                Turn 1 Part 1

                Decisions
                -Appoint new Chief Apothecary
                -Apothecary Karrack

“In these dire times, we need stability and purity of our thoughts. And I have had time to think about these things. Meditate on the subject. I know your reputation Maximilian, I know your experience on experimental things and I trust you to only work for the benefit of the Chapter. But now these times aren’t for experiments, purity of our Gene-seed needs to be ensured even if it will take longer for us to recover” You said to the two Apothecaries.

“You chose Karrack, didn’t you?” Asked Falkyr and continued after a pause. “Your reasoning is good Chapter Master.”

For Karrack this was a surprise and he didn’t know what to say for a moment before he recollected his composure.

“I will take this position with honour and will serve the Chapter with all of my capability. We will ensure that our Chapter will survive, the Apothecarion will be ready.” Karrack said. “From Dusk We Come.”

“To Twilight We Go.” You answered back.

                ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

There was renewed vigor in the Chapter. Everyone had a purpose to survive and to rebuild. This was seen especially after the ceremony where new Captains were named officially along other personnel.

In the great hall of Magnificent thousands had come to witness the ceremony. It had always been tradition that if someone is promoted, a ceremony was to be held. Company Captains would do promotions to Sergeants or presenting awards or mentions of valour, but when a new Captain is chosen it was the duty of the Chapter Master. And now it was your duty.

With ancient power sword Dawnblade from the early years of the Chapter being lost in the fighting and turmoil of the Downfall, you opted to use just a standard humble power sword from the armoury. It wasn’t made by master artificiers or Techmarines of past times, but instead it was made by nameless techpriest in forge world thousands of light years away. A munitions blade, made in thousands to arm Emperor's armies. It was a nice blade albeit bland looking and simple, but you felt it was balanced and potent weapon. It would be fine weapon for the ceremony.

The usual regality and atmosphere was gone as it was replaced by somber reminder of the Chapters current situation. Even with Magnificent being only built to house a single Company of Space Marines and the great hall wasn’t made that big, the room still had plenty of space for Chapter Serfs and Ship Crew to join the ceremony.

The new Master of Sanctity Isaiah Capon started it with prayers and hymns. While he was young, you could see that if he would temper his fiery heart, he would become a great figure in the Chapters history.

And then came your part of the ceremony. One by one new promotions of the Ship's Crew and Chapter Serfs were announced and dozens upon dozens men walked in front of you and knelt while saying the sacred vows of their station. By slightly tapping everyone of them on their right and left shoulder with your sword, you gave them your blessing and instilled the idea that even the Chapter Master relies on their actions. This was your idea to do, the Chapter needed every single fiber of strength and without the Crew or the Serfs you couldn’t do it.

Several Battle Brothers were awarded with medals or purity seals for their actions during the Downfall. While not all Chapters bother with “trinkets” as service to Emperor is the greatest gift a man can receive, Knights Twilight have always seen it as important to honour great deeds and achievements.

Finally it was time to promote people into their new positions. Both Chief Apothecary Karrack and Master of Forges Gregorius Vero quickly did their sacred vows and returned to their positions as did The Penitent who caused bit of a murr murr among the crowd. Chief Librarian Joshua Gotch took his time as did 10th Company Captain Valien Grafft. With 1st Company Captain Angus Valerian taking the longest as he wanted to address the whole Chapter.

His speech was sort and to the point, he understood that there was no need for long well worded speeches, just a message that we are going to forge the future of our Chapter together. And with that the ceremony was nearly over, just your speech remained.

“Battle Brothers, Chapter Serfs and the Crew of Magnificent. Our Chapter lies in ruins and it pains my heart to see so few of us remaining. But as Adeptus Astartes it our duty to sacrifice ourselves for the Imperium of Man and our Emperor who sits on the Golden Throne. It is our purpose to fight and die to ensure the future of mankind, so we shall not remain in gloom and sorrow. It ends today. Those who have died will be remembered as heroes of the Chapter, their sacrifice to ensure our survival was their paramount achievement, because as few as we are we still exist.

Battle Brothers! Today our rebuilding starts, today what was in the past will be put aside and replaced with single task. Knights Twilight will not vanish into the books of history, but we shall reborn and continue our duty. We are the Emperor’s wrath made manifest, we are His sword that defeats His enemies, We are the Angels of Death! And We Shall Know No Fear! From Dusk We Come!”

“TO TWILIGHT WE GO!” Came the answer from everyone in the great hall.

                ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

What you had heard and witnessed was that more or less everyone was happy with the choices you had made. Few older veterans of the Chapter felt that they should have been chosen as 1st Company Captain, but all agreed that Angus Valerian had the accomplishments and ability to lead the Company with valour.

The Penitent in turn was avoided even more than before. He didn’t mind it, neither did Captain Valerian as his Champion followed him everywhere. Having taken the power sword and combat shield as his weapons, Penitent was ready to do his duty to protect Valerian in combat or die trying.

Captain Valien Grafft in turn was rather alone in his company. With no recruits available, he turned towards making necessary plans available and helping Captain Valerian with the administration and training.

The Forges weren’t silent either. The Techmarines spent their time cataloguing the equipment, getting everything running and ready and starting to produce new gear. From the spare pieces, bits and making few new parts, The Forges produced five new suits of Mk-VIII ‘Errant’ Power Armor. This new addition to your armoury is new to the Imperium as whole. While providing improved protection against enemy weapons, the non-standard parts makes repairing the suits bit more difficult, but that is the price to pay when providing better protection. The Forges do have a plan to produce single suit more as they have the material on standby.

Apothecarion is also fully functional and is waiting for future orders. Only few minor injuries happened during the sparring and training so they had plenty of time to prepare for the future.

Finally after spending eight months in warp according to the cogitators of Magnificent, it was Madam Quillan who saw the light of Astronomicon. Members of Librarium were exhausted after months of trying to help Madam Quillan and protecting the ship and Her crew from the perils of warp. Due to this Chief Librarian Gotch didn’t have time or energy to spare to do much else.

This announcement filled Magnificent and Her escorts with joy, finally the Chapter could exit the Warp. Everyone readied themselves, prayers were spoken, candles and purity seals were placed on machinery. And with Madam Quillan and Librarium ready, the Magnificent lurched out of the Warp.

Warp Travel and Exiting Roll: 76

A hole in realspace opened as Magnificent and Her escorts entered back to the reality. The emergency warp jump had been dangerous as was the exiting of from the warp, but it seemed that nothing major had happened. All ships had survived, albeit they had some major wear and tear in their systems thanks to the long period in Warp. A lot of purifying and praying would have to be done to be certain that no lingering effects remain.

You were especially happy as Madam Quillan had managed to steer the fleet into a system instead of cold empty space. From the edge of the system Magnificents Augur and the Librarium went to work. You were on combat footing if anything would happen.

                Augur and Librarium Roll: 56
                Special Event Roll: 89

At first the Augur didn’t show anything extraordinary, the system was empty with only three lifeless balls of rock circling the small star. This system wouldn’t support life, but it wouldn’t stop pirates, orks or worse to build their nests there and launch invasions and raids. Then something was spotted.

“Single object spotted, seems to be a cargo ship.” Ensign on the Augur said

“Take us slowly closer, keep the scans up. If there is anything in the system they must have seen our approach. There is no need to hide.” You ordered as Magnificent slowly started to move towards the cargo ship.

Closer you got, the Augur readings didn’t change. It was one of the tens of thousands of cargo ships that ply their trade. 1,5 kilometres in length it floated in the system lifelessly. All attempts to hail it failed as did the scans, finally the confirmation came from Librarium. They had projected their consciousness across the space and found no sources of life. It was as if the ship was empty.

Approaching it closer, the Augur scans were projected into big screens. All of you in the bridge could see that the ship looked intact from outside. No battle damage was seen, just normal adhoc repairs that were common with cargo ships. But no signs of life at all, which made you and rest of the leadership worry. Something had to be done.

                Decisions:
                -Investigate the ship
-Send boarding party (How many members, who leads them)
-Start heavy Augur and Librarium scans and don’t approach any closer
                -Bombard the ship into pieces
                -Other

Veteran Sergeant Tigrus suggests that a boarding party should be sent to investigate the ship. Deployment with boarding torpedo and armed with weapons suitable for fighting inside a ship. Master of the Forge Vero and Apothecary Falkyr warns that while our Augurs or Librarium doesn’t see any signals of life, there are few xenos races that can cloak themselves and remain hidden. Deathwatch veterans of your Chapter agree on this, caution should be taken just in case.

                Chapter Decisions and considerations:
                -Apothecarion
-Implant test-slaves with Gene-seed (How many?)
-Try to find suitable candidates from existing Battle Brothers to become Apothecaries

With the lack of Aspirants or Neophytes to implant, Apothecarion is just on standby for medical emergencies

                -Forges
                -Build Orders (50BP available)
-Try to find suitable candidates from existing Battle Brothers to become Techmarines

Master of the Forges Gregorius Vero reminds you that he still has the orders to produce single Mk-VIII ‘Errant’ Power Armor (10BP). If that is done, you have 40(BP) remaining. Vero also suggests that while Chapters armoury is rather well stocked, more power and special weapons should be acquired.

                -Reclusiam
-Give Relics to named characters to use (which and to whom)
-Try to find suitable candidates from existing Battle Brothers to become Chaplains

Master of Sanctity Capon informs you that while more Chapter members have visited the Chapel to pray there, he hasn’t seen nothing too worrisome. While the new leadership is going to make things bit calmer for some time, he suggest that Chapter should find an enemy to fight to direct the pent up anger and frustration at them.

-Fill remaining empty positions in the Chapter with personnel
                -Other?

It is not in my mind to ask questions that cannot be answered. That is the soul standing upon the crossroad of vacillation. You search for wisdom, but achieve only a stasis of will.

QM: The turn 0 was “free turn” in terms of choices and production and now we are in the game proper. At the start of the Turn, I will ask you to make some decisions regarding the Chapter management. As the turn goes into further parts, these decisions disappear until the next turn starts. You don’t have to do all decisions I give at you, some of them are just reminders of what could be done, but something like not using your Build Points would be foolish. Now for example with the cargo ship, what I listed are just some options and you can think outside the box and give more detailed plans (but micromanaging everything due to that would make my writing take even longer.) I have also updated the Google document with these changes.

I say investigate the ship. Send over a Boarding Party armed with suitable weaponry. We could find cargo we can use. The ship itself may prove worth keeping. After inspection we can then inspect the planetoids for usable resources. Build a Mark VIII Battle Armor suit. Check out how many Test Slaves do we have to use for implantation? Any other ideas?

QM: You have 24 gene-seed available and finding that few test-slaves will not be a problem. The 40k lore doesn't say how big are Strike Cruiser crews and Magnificent is quite old ship so a lot of mundane crew is needed to man her. Finding 24 suitable volunteers amongst the crew of tens of thousands is doable.

What are the odds of encountering a derelict vessel immediately after exiting the Empyrean? I strongly suggest caution and suggest using Heavy Scans to gather more information before sending a boarding party. The only thing this costs us is time, and could forestall any unwanted surprises.

I'd also suggest searching the vessel in the archives to see what her history is? Is she missing? has she been so for some time? Where was her last port of call logged? and when?

Prep a boarding party and move the ship to an active alert status. Be prepared to respond as necessary .

QM: Seems like there is a consensus on what to do. I will write the update later this week so if you have anything to add, you have time.

I would like to ask you how do you want to use your Build Points. Pruitt wants to finish the 6th suit of Errant Armour (10BP) leaving 40BP remaining. The Build Points should be spent early in the Turn, hopefully during the Part 1 of it due to it makes meta gaming harder (not being able to just replace potential losses suffered earlier in the turn) and because start of the Turn represents start of a new year. Generally decisions that are done over time or take time to have an effect should be done early in the Turn.
