I suspect most will become clear(er) as we go along, no I just cited two things that could be "common knowledge" but may not immediately be clear to anyone unfamiliar with the setting

For example - no amount of just "sailing around" local space, is likely to bring us into contact with heretics or anything related to "Chaos" - they seem to operate in a different "dimension" (apparently the same we use to travel faster than light, and probably also to "teleport" individuals) , or at least pose as "normal" humans.

Chaos Cults are the most dangerous of all those organisations that plot to overthrow the rule of the Imperium of Man from within. All planets and civilisations belonging to the Imperium can harbour Chaos-tainted organisations, which themselves are as diverse in practice and membership as is imaginable.
"I prepared to enter his realm, expecting to encounter guardians who would seek to tear into me with talons and fangs. At the least I assumed I would find bastions to bar my progress. I found none. The land before me was open and pristine. Its fields shimmered like gold and its forests bore fruits of sapphires and emeralds. I took a step into this place and instantly knew I was lost just as surely as if I had been impaled on a debtor’s spike."

      • QM: Correct. Warp is the realm of Chaos and the main way to travel FTL. It is a very strange and corrupting place where time doesn't always move linearly, that is why time only advanced by a month, while you were in Warp for 8 months. For Chaos Cults their goal is to infiltrate into the organizations and spread across the world before launching their invasion with a goal of capturing the world for their gods, with usually in the end the human cultists draw the shortest stick and end up dead after fighting Imperium or getting sacrificed to summon reinforcements from Warp.

Warp is same time the source of Imperiums greatest enemy and the reason why Imperium can exist. No other way to travel FTL is available for humanity.

And you can definitely end up finding cultists during the visits to the planet, Librarians are especially good at spotting them thanks to the taint can be felt by them. Luckily it does seem that if there are Chaos Cults in the worlds you have visited, they are well hidden or too small to properly act.

          Aboard Strike Cruiser Magnificent
          In Vectus Sector
          Turn 2 Part 3

          Chapter Decisions and considerations:

          -Choose an action
          -Continue with Gunboat Diplomacy

          -Librarium
-Investigate the disappearance of Emerald Dreams crew
-Form special investigation group to handle the investigation, lead by Veteran Sergeant Tigrus

          -Forges
          -Build Orders (50BP available)
          -Iron Halo (30BP), 2xPsychic Hood (20BP)

-Fill remaining empty positions in the Chapter with personnel
-Epistolary Feder Gracchus for 1st Company Yes
-Apothecary Lemian for 1st Company Yes
          Special Event Roll: 98

Before you left the unremarkable world you were visiting to continue your journey across the Sector, Chief Librarian Gotch who came with you to meet with the planetary governor felt something. He had checked the prison cells deep underneath the governors holding the captured psykers, but none of them were suitable for the Chapter to use.

But this felt something different and Gotch excused himself from the presence of the local nobles. What he felt was too faint for him to exactly pinpoint the location, but he could guide himself there.

By taking the Rhino reserved for potential land travel, Gotch closed his eyes and reached for that faint thing he felt. Asking the driver to drive randomly around the capital city, he tried to feel it again.

It took him several hours of concentration and the Rhino slowly going around the residential areas then next the manufactories, but finally when he reached the old industrial areas, he felt it again. This time he was ready and reached towards what he felt with his mind, whatever was there tried to block it, but couldn’t which lead to Gotch managing to find it.

Disembarking on foot it didn’t take long for him to make his way towards what he felt across the mostly abandoned industrial sites and warehouses. Gotch felt that he was watched by gangers and those inhabiting these rusted halls, but Gotch knew that the gangers knew that whatever resistance was futile and those who Gotch saw stepped aside and scurried back into the shadows.

Closer he got, a better picture Gotch parsed together. There were charred and smoking bodies scattered all around, clearly victims of a psychic attack. And finally Gotch found what he was looking for, a scared young teen whose psychic powers had attracted Gotch like a moth to a light.

“I am Chief Librarian Joshua Gotch of Knights Twilight, please come with me if you want to live.”

Sparks of lightning flew out of the teens hands towards Gotch as he took a step closer. With ease he deflected the lightning aside and with a snap of his fingers, the young teen fainted.

“Powerful, but so unrefined. He could make a fine Librarian if he were to survive the training.” Murmured Gotch to himself before calling the Rhino to collect the young psyker. Gotch didn’t remember when last time the Chapter had found a stray psyker with potential, but this was an opportunity that shouldn’t be missed.

The start of the year 944.M41 was really uneventful, to some it was even boring. When you were not meeting with planetary governors or generals of planetary defence forces, dining with wealthy traders as you are escorting their vessels from world to world, you were training just like everyone else. The mindset of rebuilding was finally accepted by the remaining stubborn veterans and even them joined you and Captain Valerian on training exercises aboard Magnificent.

But outside of this, things happened too. Chief Librarian Gotch had managed to find a young potential psyker and had recruited him to join the Chapter. Captain Grafft of 10th Company was bit surprised as he wasn’t expecting for the Chapter to recruit anyone yet, but he gladly began to work. Special care was needed due to the nature of the new Aspirant, but Graftt had the support of the Librarium to handle it.

Same time as Graftt started to work with the new Aspirant, you had called Veteran Sergeant Tigrus and explained to him what Chief Librarian Gotch had planned. While Tigrus didn’t first see why he would be required in this, your explanation of having someone reliable and someone with a lot of experience did convince him that this could be beneficial. This had two benefits, Tigrus got something to do and feel important and you got some of the workload off Gotch.

          Special Event Roll: 57

You wondered why your next location wasn’t included in the “Sector Information” given to you by Imperial Navy when you first arrived to the sector. You had already seen that the information was sometimes rather barebones and forced you to go to some systems nearly completely blind. Thankfully you had managed to gather more information last year so your picture of the Sector became better by every visit to a new system.

This system called Habornitus was located in the outskirts of the Sector at the border of the Wilderness Space. To your knowledge the system had two worlds in it, Habornitus Prime and Habornitus Secundus, Industrial world and a Mining world. Sadly that was where your information ended.

As you arrived into the system, you weren’t greeted by Imperial Navy flight control as usual, neither you were contacted by Adeptus Mechanicus. There was just silence. The communications officers in the Magnificents bridge did manage to find the usual vox transmissions that bounce around the world and escape into space, but outside of that nothing.

But you didn’t have to wonder about that for long before Ensign manning the Augur called out.

“Four frigate sized vessels on Habornitus Primes low orbit, they are not radiating much. Magnificent’s cogitators cannot recognize the design of those vessels as Imperial origin from this distance, we need to get closer.” Ensign said.

“They could be a local design we haven’t met yet or they are renegades and pirates.” Mused Captain Valerian

“You are correct Valerian.” You agreed with his musing. “Ensign, hail them and see if they respond.”

The Ensign tried to hail them several times with no success of them answering, but it did wake them up. The frigates clearly were preparing to leave the low orbit.

As you made closer to the world and the frigates, Magnificent’s cogitators finally managed to finish their analysis and recognized the frigates.

“Two ships of Iconoclast-class and two so called Havoc-class. One of the Havocs seems to be the leader.” Called out the Ensign

You knew the Iconoclast-class as it was common among the fleets of renegades, pirates and those who serve the Ruinous Gods of Chaos. It was comparable to your Sword-class frigates, but it had the advantage of higher speed and maneuverability, but wasn’t as durable. Havoc-class in turn exchanged some of the speed and armour for more room for cargo. Clearly they weren’t servants of Imperium and Rogue Traders would proclaim who they were when hailed.

The escape route of the four ships were plotted on the big screen and potential interception course for Magnificent was plausible. It seems that if you were to act now, you can catch the ships and engage them.

You had two real options, either let them go as you weren’t here to fight them or fight them and trust that Magnificent can destroy them with the bombardment cannons before they can cause severe damage to your escorts. The option of using Boarding Torpedoes did exist too, the small and nimble torpedoes carrying the 1st Company should manage to penetrate the escorts anti-ordnance and fighter turrets easily and allow you to bring the fight into the enemy vessel. If the boarding is successful, in best case the ship can be captured.

          Decisions:
          -Unknown Frigates, choose one
          -Let them go
          -Engage them
-Board one of them with Boarding Torpedoes, which one?

          Unknown Fleet
          -Havoc-class Raider (Leader)
          -Havoc-class Raider
          -Iconoclast-class Destroyer
          -Iconoclast-class Destroyer

          ++Thought of the Day++
He who lives for nothing is nothing. He who dies for the Emperor is a hero.

QM: First naval engagement of the game. Magnificent and three Sword-class frigates vs four frigates. As a general rule of naval engagements is that cruisers like Magnificent will sweep the floor with escorts, but a swarm of them can cause severe damage to the cruiser. Thankfully you have your own escorts making the numbers even.

If you have any questions or need clarification regarding ships, naval battles or boarding, please go ahead and ask.

              • QM: Yeah there was some wonky problems with ACG, I couldn't even log in.

Sword-class frigates have macrocannons as their primary armament and they don't have torpedoes. Magnificent has six torpedo tubes and in shorter engagements can usually only launch a single salvo as reloading takes time.

Boarding attempts with boarding torpedoes take all six tubes. This is so that the defensive gunners can't concentrate their fire on a single target to ensure maximum payload of Space Marines reach the enemy vessel safely.

For sake of not keeping track of everything, consider yourself having access to torpedoes always unless you stay away from supply lines for multiple years. Basically don't worry about it unless I make noise about it.

With the current battle being rather straightforward, the options of what to do are quite straightforward too. In bigger battles there are more options.

                  • I suggest engaging the enemy fleet, but holding off a boarding action at least untill only one of their ships remains, and we have some idea what can be expected onboard.
