  • Mercenaries: Swordsworn

Welcome to the Batikshal Empire, a powerful and ancient polity reminiscent of the Holy Roman Empire. After the civil wars that ended three centuries ago the Baticene Reformation strictly forbade the use of noble vassal levies in any offensive war, as an act of treason. The loophole in the Reformation allowed the hire of trained professionals as a proxy, directly leading to the rebirth of widespread mercenary companies. Over the years the Empire’s second great city in the north - Saetal - becomes the unofficial home of these companies, where increasing numbers of noblemen and merchants sent their agents and a council of five senior mercenary captains assist in arbitrating disputes between independent companies and code violations.

The mercenary code is a loose collection of principles ascribed to by most of the more honourable independent companies, namely:
    1. No combat between mercenary companies outside the contract area.
    2. No combat between mercenary companies within 3 days’ march of Saetal.
    3. Mercenaries who surrender are held and treated well until they can be ransomed by their parent company.
    4. Mercenaries who surrender to other mercenaries and give their parole must honour it until their ransom is paid.
    5. Mercenaries do not betray their paymasters for the duration of the contract, and must make at least a “good faith” effort to fulfil the contract if feasible.

The code is a good faith enterprise in itself - there is no enforcement arm to force compliance in most cases, only the damage to the company’s reputation and the possible risk that other groups may not feel the code applies to you or may favour hiring companies they feel they can trust.

Young men and women of different races come from all over the Empire to Saetal to make their fortunes. You are one of these, come to the City of Coin at the head of a number of enthusiastic followers ready to follow you to fame and glory.

It is 323 PR in the 17th year of the reign of Emperor Karloman Batikshal, and your first campaign season is about to begin.

May the Lady of Hawks watch over you!

      Raising Companies

      Name: Unit Name

Race: Which race does your company recruit? Options include:
Mixed (No racial bonus, highest manpower available for recruitment)

      Elven (Wood, High, City, Dark)

Animalkin Clans (Wolf, Bear, Cat, Horse)

      Dwarven

      Stonekin

      Flora

      Orcish

Racial Bonus: GM to advise based on your choices above.

Background: Where did you and your soldiers come from before your first muster this season?
      Ex-Militia

      Huntsmen

      Peasantry

      Traders

Terms of Employment: Sign-on bonus, if any? Seasonal pay per man? Shares of loot from battlefield vs sack? Equipment supplied for all new recruits? Anything else we should know?

Preferred Doctrine: What is your company “known” to be? Medium shock infantry? Skirmishers? A mixture of spearmen and support formations of archers?

Equipment Choices: Each formation should be equipped consistently - so 50 people with the same equipment, or 30 people with a preset ratio of 1:2 mixed gear. See next post for equipment list.

Home Region: Depends on your race - in some cases this is preset (only option), while in others I can offer you multiple (or all) to choose from.

        Gear & Equipment List

Base price list for new: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing

This can be used for initial setup, and as a rule of thumb for buy requests moving forward.
        • Good quality items can be bought for 130% of the price listed for this average item.
        • Poor quality items will accrue a discount of between 20-50% of the average price.
        • In some cases items are noted with a region or race name. Players in these regions or of these races can consistently secure a reduced price for these items (eg, Dwarven Kite Shield or Chimallin Leaved Aventail).
        • Mounts with names in italics are considered suitable for combat.

          What Next?

Post your company information using the Raising Companies template (above). You will need GM feedback for Racial bonus and Home region options.

Your starting capital is 50 000 crowns and you can ignore any sign-on bonus your company offers.

I will examine the options and get back later today. We should be able to hire Horse Archers and Heavy Cavalry?

I imagine you could have a centaur/horseperson unit!

Horse clan animalkin are Centaurs, yes - the others are shifters of one stripe or another.

Definitely you could construct heavy cavalry and horse archer elements from the options available. The equipment is unlikely to be cheap, but that mostly means you’ll have a smaller company but a harder one.

Senorankka: Sounds good! Are you planning to equip the same dwarves with great axe and crossbows, or some formations with each?
