    Chapter Two --- Carlisle

The journey to Carlisle was exhausting. Union-class dropships are not made to be enjoyable for long journeys in space and due to that most of you spend as much time as possible aboard the jumpships. When you finally arrived to your destination it took your employer two days to send you a message. Yet again it was a short one, just a string of coordinates to land to. From the coordinates you realize that you are landing on continent called Worrsetgard and away from any major cities.

Slowing down and carefully landing at the designated spot that happened to be a dropship landing pad and seeing what was around you. The landing pad was surrounded by number of large warehouse looking structures with forests covering the hills that circled the place. You could see a lot of personnel hurrying about with soldiers taking positions around the dropship and escorting trio of Griffins. Finally you got the order to disembark your BattleMechs and move out prepared for combat. This made Captain Harding to look even more steely and calm, it was like he anticipated something like this to happen.

Having disembarked and formed a neat line outside your dropship one of the Griffins stepped forth. He spoke and then waits for you to speak.

“Good morning MechWarriors. I am deeply sorry for the secrecy, but nowadays you don’t know who to trust. My name is Eric von Angedorf, the second heir to Graf von Angedorf and you are here make sure that I inherit that title.”

Welcome to the second chapter of BattleTech Wargame RPG called “Carlisle”.

    Thread Theme

OOC: Second chapter starts with a bang. I wanted this thread out today as I have my body and mind fresh after a weekend of very nice camping and before the daily slog that is work strips me of my writing inspiration. I will try to put out the updated roster and inventory sheet out in few days so let us start with some light roleplaying. Also I think embedding youtube videos doesn't work, if anyone knows how to do it in new ACG, please tell me.

Chief McSwain looks over at Captain Harding and gives him a knowing nod. "Not the first time this has come up before. Well, let's see what we have to work with, keep our boys alive, and keep the breakage low".

Turning to the would-be Graf, Scopes introduces himself, drawing to something halfway approximating "at ease" and "parade rest" with his hands lightly resting on his gunbelt. "Chief Warrant Officer McSwain, callsign Scopes. Currently of Rainbow, retired from the Dark Horse. And you are most certainly right, trust and secrecy are stock in both our trades, be they politics or the business of warfare. As mine is the latter, I'm ready to get down to business. What intel do you have on our opposition, mechs, pilots, numbers, supporting arms? And what forces are you bringing onboard?"

“Immediately asking the right questions, I like you MechWarrior. The answer is not enough and they know it. This requires more of a subtle approach for us to succeed. We shall talk about this subject when we have moved to more private place.” Eric von Angedorf says.

“Anything else you have in mind?”

Legs eyes up the Graf and his Griffins

"Well, this should be fun, I've always preferred a subtle approach, especially given the type of stuff I'm usually given to pilot."

Subtle approach, eh? Dragon chuckles at such a silly notion. "Of course, just point us at something and we'll kill it....discreetly! The way you say in making sure you inherit the title sounds like someone is going to die a painful death at some point."

“I hope that no one has to die because of this all, but it is certain possibility that your more direct approach might happen. But now please follow me to my manor with your BattleMechs, I would say that assassination is a real threat. Rest of your crew can stay here to wait further orders.”

Mounting your BattleMechs, it took you half an hour of walking to reach his manor. What you saw was typical manor for Lyran nobles. Four large structures were built into a square of which each have their own purpose. First there was the manor itself, then the house for the servants and the workers, stables for the animals and garages for the fast cars and finally a structure containing several mechbays.

Dismounting your BattleMechs and changing to more formal uniforms, you followed Eric von Angedorf inside. Going through hallways which walls were covered in paintings, you finally arrived to his command center where few uniformed men sre working. There on a table, you saw the map of the local area with red blibs, which you presume being rest of his family, outnumbering his blue blibs.

“This is my command center and this place has all information that is available to you. To cut the long story short, my father Graf von Angedorf is slowly dying to cancer and he has said to me and shown me his will. The will says that I inherit his properties, wealth and titles over my big brother and little brother. The moment my father is dead and the will becomes public, they either back down and allow me to inherit or they aggressively hound me to get me to denounce the will or in worst case, they will kill me and destroy my forces.

What we need is a proof that they are aggressive and don't care for the laws of Lyran Commonwealth. And we are going to have a perfect chance soon. You see we run annual wargames on nearby fields with our BattleMechs in simulator settings. While this is more or less safe, accidents might happen. I fear that I or one of my MechWarriors will become a target for one accident they create to happen and I need you to be the witnesses for it and to ensure the safety of me and my men. Officially you are here to train my forces which you are going to do before the wargames start and between the “matches” that happen. You have experience for it so you have a good alibi. I think my little brother has a small mercenary crew training his men too.

I bet you have the questions regarding the pay you will receive. Officially you will receive the pay through ComStar as usual, but due to the secrecy I will pay you a extra hazard pay out of my cash funds or alternatively through other means.”

Eric von Angedorf finally stops and looks at you. You can see the stress of the situation on his face.

“Any questions? And remember, all this is confidential and shall not leave this room. Most likely there are spies within my household and forces. ”

OOC: I lied, decided to write the update now. You now know the situation. More questions to Eric von Angedorf regarding the situation or ideas how to make him look better compared to his brothers or prepare him for the worst case scenario.

Maybe ask him to replace his mechanics with ours, that will cut down on the chance of sabotage.

We need to check out his younger brother's mercenary crew and what Mechs they're riding in.

Chief McSwain smooths his mustache as he ponders a moment. "Well, first and foremost you should quietly work on outing any disloyalty in your own forces. Not something I'm adept at, but I'm familiar enough to know it needs to be done. Not necessarily elimination, but identify and monitor, and make sure they're not placed where they can do fatal damage to you if possible."

Pondering further he says "I like that you're the legal heir. That makes it a bit simpler, as it's less likely outsiders will jump in on their sides, but that doesn't mean anyone's going to volunteer to help us either. If this starts, once it starts, we will need to move swiftly and decisively. I doubt that your brothers will care enough about their men that they'll back down even after losing a bunch of them. We need to have up to date locations of your brothers and their principal lieutenants. Isolate the former, decapitate the latter. If there's no middle leadership then the battle falls apart before it stops and your brothers will have to personally lead if they won't back down. I'm presuming that if your brothers will go away then you don't necessarily want them dead, at least not right now. As for a way to make them show their hand, I would suggest that you have a tech that you trust absolutely go over all your mechs in secret before the training op. We will do the same with our own tech. I would presume that an accident would be arranged. And I wouldn't undo all the damage, allow treachery to occur but have your tech fix the sabotage in such a way as to prevent it from being permanently fatal to the mech or the pilot, and make sure that your key mechs aren't sabotaged. In this way you let them reveal their hand, you know which of your techs is a traitor, and you gain your cassus belli publicly and without any doubts. If you simply go over your kit and fix sabotage, it'll be your word against theirs. I would also ensure that a few mechs that are absolutely in fighting trim are on standby and armed for bear."

"As to the training, that can start immediately and should. We can do that openly, and that'll keep your brother intelligence apparatus busy. We can even plan for specific operations that are opposite to our plans, in order to influence their own planning. Things like an escort operation, but our intent is not to escort you or another HVT, but rather to assault, for example."

Sir Richard has a question: "Can you get this will in your possession now? I am also a lesser son of a good family. I have no problem with my older siblings inheriting before me. I don't mind training your troops and will fight for you as I have signed the contract. I prefer that the whole planet does not come down on us.

Oh yeah.... the Cadre thing turned out to be a hell of a lot more interesting...

Sad to say, put me on auto-pilot for now, this weekend I'm out of town. I'll be back into this in a couple of days.

                        (Perhaps I missed this, but...)

"Is it possible that your brothers can be used against each other? The younger one has absolutely no claim to the inheritance, but perhaps you could offer him something that convinces him to support you instead."

Best not to get caught fighting this battle on two fronts.

                        In addition:

"Your claim that you've seen the will I'll not question for now. But have you thought that there might be another will floating around, most likely counterfeit, ready to be displayed for all to see by one or both of your brothers?"

OCC and In real life, my parents were schisted out of some of my grandfather's inheritance because TWO wills showed up, the other being a forgery but the judge was a friend/relative of the crook involved. It ended up being a split decision on his part, but it shouldn't have been. This thing is still damaging my calm even ten years later.

“Replacing our Astechs and Techs is probably impossible, but having few of your men to be integrated with them could be plausible. Have them teach my Astechs who have seen only peace, how maintenance is run on actual combat situations.

I can try to get the information on the mercenaries serving my little brother. It might take some time, but we will acquire that information.”

Eric von Angedorf takes his glasses and cleans them before continuing.

“Frankly I don’t want to believe that there are spies within my household or forces, but it is distinct possibility. Outside the few men in this room and the MechWarriors in my Household Guard there are not many that I would trust. But you are right, we need to start searching for them. I will leave that for you to do between the exercises, they most likely are wary about my men snooping around, but not you.

I do trust my Chief Mechanic, but he can’t be everywhere same time. If he spots any sabotage, he will inform me. Then we can make the decision what to do.

I don’t see us separating my two brothers. They have always been together and nothing can break that bond, but maybe something can be done to keep them away each other for sometime at least. Regarding the Will, it is in possession of my father. My brothers might try to forge a copy that is in their favour, but to forge the Will I have seen, is quite hard or even impossible.”

Eric von Angedorf walks to a computer and with few clicks opens a file containing the latest data regarding the forces available and the forces the enemy has.

Jeez.... to have a good chance at winning we'd have to take one of those guys out before they can combine their forces.

Spies are easy, just plant slight variations of true but useless information and wait to see what version gets back to the enemy. But, hopefully you have a few prime suspects to plant the info on.

I choose Battle Mechs, its what I know.
