A satellite surveillance system would be helpful, even if it is unarmed.

Chief McSwain pores over spreadsheets in between sips of bourbon while mumbling under his breath. "Kids these days, always worried about getting aerospace fighters or satellites. Sure, we'd all love them, we'd also like to be able to afford food and fuel too."

"Chief Warrant Officer McSwain is right. Aerospace Fighters and advanced sensors are a thing we would like to have, but we do not have funds for either. Our profits will go into maintenance, your salaries, refitting this dropship and to pay off our creditors.

For this contract, Lyrans are going to feed us information if something is happening. In addition I will make sure that Chief Engineer Karlsson checks your mech sensors so that you don't get ambushed if we are attacked."

With no one apparently wanting to talk to him, McSwain tosses back the lack of his drink and stalks off to the mech bay to check on his mech, a tigerstripe camo'ed Blackjack with "Hailstorm" stenciled on one breast and the same faded gold Circle with black horse on the other, a crosshair superimposed.

              Raid of Timbuktu (3025)

With the landing to going fine, Crimson’s Rainbow was ready to disembark. Some of the crew waited for a military parade to welcome them at Greenes civilian spaceport, but instead they just found a sergeant showing them a empty hangar where to stash their gear and when to report to 11th Arcturan Guards. It took Captain Harding few days to get the cooperation working with the local forces and without major problems the training started on March 12, 3025.

The next four months went fast. Every week a new company would get to fight against Crimson’s Rainbow in exercises to learn and become better. At first the companies would get trounced by the long range fire from the Rainbow before they learned how to ambush the BattleMechs with infantry and use their own light mechs to flank the heavy Warhammers. Usually by the end of the week, Lyran company managed to snatch win or two from the Rainbow.

Outside the training there were more tasks to be done. Regular patrols by both BattleMechs and by vehicles were done near the spaceport as contracted with the technicians working through the night to get the equipment back to working order. But after the daily rhythm was found, everything went without a hitch.

Then finally on sunny afternoon, 17th of July, on a break during an routine patrol with your full lance, you were contacted from Metallic Bride.

“This is Crimson, multiple contacts have been reported by the Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces. 11th Arcturan Guards are deploying their forces right now. Four dropships have already landed near you position. Our long range scanners show two fast moving lances and two medium lances moving towards the space port. We have no idea of the actual numbers on ground. You are in their way, I say again...BZZZZZZ.”

The pirates have attacked and they have clearly jammed your long range radios. Captain Harding cannot provide you with information during this battle. Both Infantry Platoon and Armoured Lance are at the spaceport with small continent of Lyran defenders. The question is, do you try to reach the spaceport before the pirates get there, or do you try to stop the pirates before they can reach the spaceport?

OOC: This decision will dictate what kind of battle it will be. Spaceport has a lot of expensive stuff near it that the pirates want to steal. There is also a possibility for collateral damage. If you try to catch the pirates before the space port, the field will be mostly empty with just few barren hills.

While technically TacCovert/Chief Warrant Officer McSwain is in charge, you all can say your opinion on this and discuss what to do. You are in a hurry, but not in that big hurry. Also this is much more fun this way. Any questions?

                No questions.

"We must strive to meet them before they get to the spaceport. Have some of the Lyrans set up a second line of defense at the spaceport just in case we fail. We can take the rest with us and intercept them."

Chief McSwain spins up Hailstorm's systems to full and peers at his tactical display.

                  "Dagger, Hoff....Rainbow"

                  "Static"

"Report of 4 lances approaching spaceport. Advise on readiness."

                  "Static"

...."Dammitall I hope those ground pounders get their asses moving out here to provide that support!"

                  ------

                  Switching to unit channel....

"Rainbow Lead to Rainbow, Advise Callsigns, Weapons loadout and Mech Status. Scopes with Hailstorm, 65kph, 2 AC2s 4 MLs all systems Green. Thoughts on hitting those light lances at range if possible rookies?"

OOC: Small clarification. With long range radios being jammed, you don't have connection to forces outside your own lance.

At the moment, the sensors mounted on your mechs don't show anything. This can change fast.

Time to break these enemy mechs. Hit them before they reach the spaceport.

Hearing the suggestions, Chief McSwain rolls his eyes inside the cockpit of Hailstorm. "Well, at least they're not running, now to keep them alive"

Getting on the Lance comms, he quickly details his plan:

"We have a medium-heavy Lance, but only five mechs to what I'd estimate is sixteen pirate mechs. With the numbers in their favor, we need to string them out and let our fire support assets and the locals carry some of the weight, or we all wind up blasted between the spaceport and the pirates.

Rainmaker, you've got the fastest mech. Scout ahead, but do not engage. Find some high ground, with cover if you can, and locate one of the light lances. We will move up behind you for the engagement, hopefully in ambush if you can locate them. If rushed, come straight back to us so we can support.

Dragon, you're rear guard. All your weapons are close range, and I don't want a close-in fight until we're pressed or we've fallen back to within Dagger's LRM and AC5 umbrella nearer the spaceport proper. Keep our backs clear.

Pruitt, Raimius, we three will be the main firing line. Long Range Weapons only, that means PPCs and ACs. Go for guaranteed killing blows, we want this first lance down in record time.

The weather is warm and there aren't any rivers or lakes to cool off in, so heat management, heat management! I want to put down their first scout lance with a sharp engagement outside their firing envelope, then we move and cool off before the next one.

Plan is to move up behind Rainmaker to the first Scout Lance, kill it, then fall back to the next cover. Repeat if possible, then fall back to the spaceport. There we will take on one Medium Lance while our support and the locals take on the second.

                          Questions?"

                                Gee, ya think?

                                Okay, I'm back.

I also notice that we don't have a Dropship... maybe we should send a Striker (our fastest vehicle) to go take a look and find out exactly where they are parked?
Hey, we are Mercs, and that could be a hell of a nice prize...

Until we get close to the enemy, it does not make sense NOT to move at a run. Since the Warhammers move at 64 kph when running it gives us a good chance to gain a good position.
... if our Scout does a good job, that is.

                                Let's get some!
