  • And expect rainbow to move elsewhere now that the situation is stable enough for brigades with less than 3 legendary stars.....

      • Veterancy

So everyone knows where they currently stand.....and what they stand to lose if they reinforce too heavily:

        Gardner: Veteran

        Richter: Veteran

        Tar Heels: Regular

        Saddle Blazers: Regular

        Green Jackets: Crack

Finches: Veteran (verge of Crack, just a really big unit takes more time and success)

        Bates: Crack

        Tigers: Crack

        Badgers: Veteran

        --------------

I'm anticipating maybe next week starting up the next Episode. I have the battle picked, the RP stuff pre-battle done up, most of the enemy OOB arranged, and what NPC augments might be available set. Only thing left is for me to make the map, and I've been working on some scaling stuff this time since generally our maps have been small enough that Gardner could effectively sit in one spot the whole day and hit anything anywhere on the map....trying for something just a wee bit bigger so he might find positioning to be more of a challenge this time.

        • Lets make the housekeeping first before any RP.
          This is my shopping list:
-Increase the troop number from 97 to 126 (30%). Allocate them my remaining carbines.
-Purchase single Calisher & Terry Carbine to arm the last man
-If plausible, acquire revolvers for the troops to increase their potential in melee. My small numbers suffer a lot when fighting against numerically superior foe. Alternatively more single shot pistols, New York reload! Brits weren't wrong during Indian mutiny about them. Bigger caliber stops the enemy.

          Outside game system:
-Acquire ponchos for the men. Dry soldier is happy soldier. In addition acquire better backpacks etc. Plan is to equip Bates Irregulars better so that they can skirmish with greater efficiency.

          • With the battle over, Maj Bird moves his troops back to CC and establishes the GJ lines in the four houses that he requisitioned earlier in the SE corner of the town - One house for the GJ officers and sergeant-major, the other houses splited between the three companies.

The GJ Quartermaster Sergeant also took over the large storage building near the pier where the Federal forces weapons and equipment was now being deposit. He would eventually share the whole building with Rainbow supply train.

Maj Bird was smoking a cigar and having a drink of a smooth alcoholic liquor while sitting on a chair on the veranda of the GJ Officers' House. The drink was offered by the house owners, who decided to stay and host his officers and sergeant-major in their house. This was the case in the other three houses and the GJ Sergeant-Major ensured that the troops did not break or loot anything, and displayed the upmost courtesies to the residents of CC.

Earlier today, in a very short and quick ceremony, while General Sennef was visiting the town and met his mayor, Maj Bird present the 9 NJ colors to the Rainbow Brigade Commander, making sure to emphasized the efforts of the other Rainbow units in the fight that allowed the GJ to collect the enemy regimental flags.

Maj Bird heard that General Sennef was thinking of making him the XO for Rainbow Brigade. He was flattered, but there must surely be better and more enthusiastic candidates with Rainbow Brigade to take that position. He was quite content to only command his Green Jackets.

As for the After-Action Report, here are a few points:

The need for the troops to be armed with revolvers to add to their firepower when in close quarter fighting - Faced with larger Yankee battalions, the extra firepower would compensate for the lack of numbers.

There is a need for better communications, other than tired runners. Maj Bird suggests keeping 8 to 10 of Dee's troopers to act as messengers for the Commanding General - They could be called Dee-Spatch Riders...

Another point, there is a need for cavalry to scout the front of moving and maneuvering infantry that are not in contact with the enemy to mitigate against surprises and therefore allow more rapid movements.

Last point, Rainbow needs another line infantry battalion...skirmishers, cavalry, artillery and elite grenadier companies are great when specialist troops are required, but it is numbers that hold the line and another 400-600 men battalion would make a difference.

            • Well, to answer a couple of things:

              1) Unfortunately you were not able to retain any of the Hussars.

              2) The 150 Veterans are an opportunity to expand one or both of the smaller infantry formations without losing experience.

              3) Revolvers for everyone......that's some fancy budget work.....

                1)

                2) Or someone , other than Finch and Bird, can receive an intake of 300 recruits and build experience as the campaign goes on.

                3) My intent was more revolvers in the line infantry unit, but if you want to give revolvers to everyone, I'm fine with that too! Didn't you already write that Rainbow is the best equipped Confederate force?

Well.....I was speaking to the difficulty of buying 4pt weapons for a lot of men when you only have 1600pts to play with.

                  • Tac & Sennef,

First, this is for Tac, you did a fantastic job of managing the game. I enjoyed it a lot and I know it's a lot of work you put in, if I could, I'd send you a package of Georgia's pecan pies (they are supposedly the best in the nation according to Major Holden).

In any case, I'd like to increase my men from 129 to 132. I note that currently I only have 3 Whitworth rifles available without taking the store points. I think this can be done without input from Sennef.

Now, this is where it gets tricky....maybe Tac can clear up on this one.

                    Second, this is for Sennef,

Since Tac permits us to increase our units by 30% without experience penalty. I would love to increase my unit from 129 to 150 (under 30%). But this means taking some men from the rookie pool and using the points to buy specialty arms (Whitworth rifles), revolvers & cavalry swords. I know that we have 1600 pts but as everyone knows, these can be used up rather quickly.

With the departure of NCGG and Dee's Hussars, a large portion of 1600 pts will be put toward the creation of a new unit or two.

I'm tempted to ask permission to equip my men with scopes, but as Tac explained to me in a PM that the scopes are prohibitively expensive, more than the rifles themselves. But I'll refrain from asking too much.

Even though the Badgers didn't see much action in the last battle, I think you can never have enough Whitworth sharpshooters on the field. As we saw in the battle of New Bern, they were used to great effect in mowing down the officers and causing chaos within the Yankee units.

If placed properly to maximize the effect on the enemy, the Badgers can be the most lethal force before Yankees can reach us within their range.

                    • The Legion requests we get 23 recruits. With over 50 casualties, surely we were able to salvage some revolvers? I for see some dismounted drill ahead for us!

                      • Alright:

Due to some RL issues, and the loss of the XO, Sennef has granted me the reins to a degree on refitting, within the framework he outlined.

                        That being said, priorities are:

                        1) refitting where it can be done without incurring cost.

                        2) Making the Artillery batteries as good as possible.

                        3) Boosting Infantry numbers and firepower

                        4) All other requests.

With that in mind, the following two things have been done:

                        1) Georgia Badgers is now bumped to 150 men.
                        2) Bates Irregulars is now 126 men.

                        The following remains:

                        150 Veterans
                        550 Recruits
                        1416 pts
                        (Access to Dreyse Rifles/Carbines)

And Pruitt, consider 30 revolvers to have been recovered in working condition.

                        • Major Leroy passes around the whiskey for his men drink to celebrate. We have become a more professional force and now only drink during battle when all hope is lost. Besides, with the liquor rations we have and the tolerance of these sailors and dockworkers, it wouldn't do much anyways. Oh and I asked my men if they want revolvers, and they laughed and said, "what are we now, officers or cavalrymen!?" I would only take revolvers for the officers or any man who has experience shooting one accurately.

I know the Tigers didn't do much but sit on their ass the last battle but does every battle add experience regardless of whether we actually were engaged? If so, when do the Tigers get Legendary status? What does that even mean? Don't even know if we took any losses. We're happy with what we got, we're Rainbow after all, not some mindless blue automatons that all look like each other! We will take Veterans but perhaps they would be better to go to either the most depleted or most senior line company.
