      North to South

The Tar Heels mount up and ride to the railroad cut. Dismounting, they take position on the left end of the line, part of their number in the open behind the track embankment. Bates brings his irregulars up to the low embankment as well, inside the trees of the grove. To the south, Major Leroy columns his Tigers and leads them North through the wood towards the railroad as well.

Loading case, Captain Richter lets fly with his first shots of the engagement, catching the 23rd Massachusetts evidently by surprise. Taking noticeable casualties from the shots, the advance continues to roll forward, men moving to get into the relative safety of the trees.

Continuing to take effective fire from the guns of Gardner's Battery, the 27th shys away to the North, putting a farmhouse partially obscuring their line from the guns. Deploying into line, a larger regiment of Federal troops deploys at a further distance than the 27th did, and halts, apparrently in reserve.

The enemy is laying off in the center, maybe because of the shellfire, but certainly because of the emerging threat to the South. Holden's Badgers and Bird's Green Jackets emerge from the wood and advance, the Badgers flowing around Bird's battalion to exchange positions as they move forward.

But on the southern tip of the wood, black helmeted green men rush forward in bounds, some firing at the houses where the 10th Connecticut is known to be while others run forward to new positions. A few men fall, but the crack troops rushes get them across 300 yards of open ground and to the first houses. Simultaneous with their advance Finch's Battalion steps out of the treeline and unloads a series of volleys at extreme range against the 10th as well. Not able to see any effects, Finch orders his battalion to advance, and they show off a drill that they have been working on for months. In the same three lines that they had been using from the beginning of their training, in contravention to 'proper drill', they spread an arm's length per man. Then with the front ranks kneeling, the rear rank fires and advances about ten yards, the process repeating itself as they slowly move across the open ground while providing a steady series of volleys, about one every ten seconds.

Lt Dyers and two of the GJ troopers, all three on horseback, have already gone forward scouting and looking for any enemy activity that may threaten the GJ.

(OOC: What does that big building look like - A ship maintenance shed, a warehouse, some kind of commercial building?)
With three horsemen scouting their front, Maj Bird is getting impatient as the three GJ company-columns quickly marches towards the warehouse...Impatient, as they should have been closer to the warehouse by now.

Once at the warehouse, the GJ will move North to conduct Hammer 2 against the Yanks.

        • Finally, about time that we got out of this cursed pine forest, thought Major Holden. He could see NCGG's crack troops and Finch's battalion making their way into Carolina City, smiling to himself, that action had only barely began. He is eager to get his men going and engage enemy forces, showing off the hard work of training his men to hone their already legendary sharpshooting skills.

          Major Holden's orders:

1.) Advance quickly (double paced march) until the Badgers is only 500-600 meters from Carolina City itself, it is to be positioned at the southern edge of the grove, with the views of Finch's men and NCGG troops advancing and Major Bird's men making their way toward the large warehouse building near the pier. The Badgers is to remain in skirmishing formation.

2.) Coordinate with Major Bird by having Bird send a runner to us once his men reaches the large building, informing us that the way is clear and that Bird has established the fire base for the Badgers to make its advance toward the same large building that Bird is inside now.

3.) In meanwhile, the Badgers is to open the fire immediately on the 10th CT, downing their officers first. Support Finch and NCGG. Continue firing on them until Major Bird sends the runner, telling us that the way is clear.

4.) Once Major Holden receives the confirmation, the Badgers is to advance quickly to the large warehouse, taking over the building as the fire base, to support Green Jackets advancing into the city along either northerly or northeast route (to another large building, to the east of the city itself).

Finch follows his battalion, if he is somewhat surprised by the swiftness and elan with which his own troops move to what is after all their first attack, he does his best not to show it.

Yeah, both are equally far away through the trees, but the 23rd looks to be the larger target.

I'll harass them with some H.E. at a reasonable pace, no need to burn up too much ammo when we are almost firing blind.

                    • I continue my fire into the 27th. If they crumble, the center of the Union line is gone. That leaves their flanks open to attack from multiple directions.

                      • Finch will continue his advance, but by company in echeloned fashion, the leftmost company will halt and keep up fire, will the companies to the right will continue to advance, one beyond the other so that my right flank company eventually ends up where the Grenadiers are now.

The Grenadiers in turn move into the town and then wheel to the left and attack 10CT from the flank using their high powered rifles to get into grenade range.

The grenades should work well against troops holed up in houses, and their rifles may well shoot through wooden walls at close range.

It's important Finch right companies cooperate closely with the Grenadiers, and do not allow a gap to fall between both units, since they provide the manpower to occupy the ground the grenadiers take, ard they are equipped with bayonets, axes, shovels and empty cotton bags, all of which may come in handy for house to house fighting.

It is equally important though to avoid bunching up in the streets.

To this end Finch will position himself on the right of his line, to personally supervise the cooperation with Trapp.

The idea is obviously to engage 10CT simultaneously with fire from their front/left, grenade attacks on their left flank, then house to house fighting and ultimately close assault.

Hopefully in this manner we can create a shock effect and drive the enemy from the town without actually having to kill them one by one.

Giving clear orders to his company to fix their ranks and prepare for fight. Bates Irregulars were ready to start delivering volleys when Yanks are within effective firing range.

With company prepared for a battle, not in their preferred skirmishing order, but as line infantry made Bates bit uncomfortable. He knows that his men can fight Yank regiments 1vs1 and win, but against two regiments? Looking to his left and right and seeing Pruitts and Richters men with their weapons made him bit more confident.

                          • Tigers take position east of R Btty. We keep eyes and ears open towards the direction of 23MA for when they advance through the forest north of us. We will hold for as long as possible. I have several men sneak across the RR to mark the treeline for ranges and have men adjust sights for their range depending on where they are positioned. When the 23MA comes out of that treeline they will think twice about coming out.
