Fawcett directs Holden's command to the north of the line, in support of Leroy or Tremayne.

He should occupy the Fort or the fortified position in that area as he deems fit and put hard cover between his sharpshooters and the multitudinous foe.

    • Major Pruitt orders his men to keep firing from horseback. He will keep a eye on the woods for any sign of more Yankees coming on. He does not want to fight two or more Regiments from horseback. He orders one Platoon to retreat 50 yards and await the rest coming back.

"Men if they come out of the woods, give them two pistols worth and fall back to the other platoon! There, reload the carbines and shoot at the Yankees. Save one pistol for when we move back to the fortified lines!"

      • Maj Bird moved his three companies to Rainbow's main defensive line.

As per the previous withdrawing moves that day, Cpt Walsh and the three companies 2Lts are already there and direct the troops into the fortified position.

The battalion quartermaster and the three hired civilian cooks have already set large pots full of coffee over small fire behind each company’s position. This is important, as the new troops will be dealing with a first adrenaline crash after their very first action against the enemy and the coffee will help them keep alert.

His troops did very well. They survived their first action against the enemy. They kept their discipline and cool when maneuvering against a forward moving threat. They are not battle-hardened soldiers yet, but after their first firefight, they are no longer green recruits either

Walking quickly with his three company columns towards the defensive line, he looks at the forest they left behind. With a little luck, the slight winds from the West will push the smoke of the fires they started into the woods and towards the Yankees. Perhaps, the whole forest will burn down and take the pursuing Yanks with it.

        • Col. Fawcett proceeds down the line to meet Bird with his handful of Saddle Blazer messengers trailing behind.

"Excellent work Major, a short and sharp encounter with a clean separation. I'll wager those blue-bellies are still stumbling around in the wood wondering what happened to them!" He looks across the companies moving into their defensive positions, some within ear-shot and raises his voice subtly.

"How fare the men, Major? Living up to their battle honors?"

          • "Major Pruitt tells his men that as soon as he can tell that the remaining Rainbow units are out of the Woods we will ride for the South end of the Fortified line. There we will await further orders."

Grabbing a coffee mug presented to him by one of the cook, Maj Bird leaves Capt Walsh (the XO) oversee the troops move into their new position His Sergeant-Major is dealing with the head count and the wounded.

"The Green Jackets did very well" tells Maj Bird to Col Fawcett, looking up at the mounted officer. "The Yankees are probably still looking for themselves in the smoke-filled forest."

"Having Holden, Dee, Pruitt and Bates working to secure our flanks helped us to withdraw cleanly. After continuous action, Bates' troops will be quite tired but they never failed to protect our right. They have my admiration."

After a few more minutes of chit-chat, Col Fawcett leaves, letting Maj Bird go back to his business to prepare the defence of his new line. Cpt Walsh reports that all three Green Jackets companies are in position.

                • Dee continues his tactics, moving backwards to engage from far range, using concealment and cover as necessary, until his men are all gathered at the fortifications on the far right.

Good cover provided them a strong position to target Yankees stumbling through the woods, and they feel more confident with Bird on their left. But they’re only a small cavalry detachment.

If their flank becomes exposed or they cannot hold their position, there is still a final fortified position further to the rear to regroup at. Hopefully, however, the woods before them will slow down the Infantry enough to make them easy pickings for Dee’s marksmen - and he certainly is hoping to keep demoralizing them, promising a small purse and a tasty sausage to every officer his men bring down.

                  Orders:
                  A) hold the fortification to protect Bird’s flank, using their superior range and accuracy to hit the federals moving out of the woods ahead.
                  B) to continue to withdraw back further to the rear if Bird is pushed back or the position becomes untenable, the Hussars being cavalry and skirmishers, not combat infantry.

                      • The Green Jackets are in position.

Extra ammo has been provided by their Quartermaster. Some 50% more to each rifleman.

In addition to the coffee, water canteens have been filled and some rations were provided for a quick bite.

The Quartermasters wagons are stationed at a safe distance behind the buildings, ready to push more ammo forward, if needed.

Wounded from the previous forest firefight are moved to the rear.

                        • Gentlemen, I have the honour to report that my Britannic Battery stands ready!
                          Yours, Tremayne
Postscript:- I have already addressed my men with the following stirring speech-

"Fellow Britons, should some of you wonder why you are here fighting for the Confederacy, just remember when the Union onslaught begins in earnest, you won't be fighting for the Confederacy or anything else, you'll be fighting for your lives!
And although we go into battle now on a foreign field, remember that the glory we win here shall belong to Her Majesty Queen Victoria forever!
Let us so acquit ourselves that when our countrymen an ocean away eagerly open their copies of The Times of London they will read with pride that we did our duty! Now get the kettle on"

                            • Cpt Leroy makes sure his men are fed, rested and supplied. We will hold the line in front of the fort for as long as possible and shift men to the south of the fort to make sure they don't make it through the gap between us and Tremayne and fall back into the fort and keep the union from capturing the fort.

That's the general idea; my men are ordered to kill anything wearing blue or floating in the river..
