  • Just a note:

I started with 12 pd. Blakely's not Brookes. Brooke rifles are the Confederate version of the Parrott for coast defense and use on Confederate ships. The smallest Brooke is 6.4"

      • Finch's Company: (130 men, Regular, Enfield 1853 Rifle & Bayonet)

Assigned 480 "points" of equipment over replacement. Has priority after Bird to purchase rifles from the captured weapon pool at standard pricing (2 points each). Consider reinforcing heavily to a 280+ man battalion and accepting the loss of experience.
Has now been reinforced to 485 men, armed with Enfield 1853 Rifle & bayonet, knife, 1 axe/shovel/or 3 empty cotton or linnen bags per man.

This in fact makes us a small battalion, rather than a company and we can do away with unhistorical platoons.

The new recruits will be incorporated into the earlier system, split in 4 companies of roughly 120 each.

1 will be the skirmisher company, 2-4 will be line companies.

The new men will be adopted into the existing formations, and training will restart as before, so what follows is a copy paste from my original orders.

Try to look for a somewhat natural organisation, grouping men of same families or villages together appointing some figure with an air of authority as sergeants.

1 company will be my tirailleurs, they will train to quickly disperse from a company formation with the battalion to a loose circle surrounding it, or a loose line in any particular direction making use of available cover and firing aimed shots, individually as opportunity allows.

Also obviously - to react to a given bugle signal that will recall them to the main unit, and form up in line at the rear of the battalion.

The other 3 companies will be my line companies, they will individually train to form into either a column three men abreast or a line 3 men deep.

The line companies together will also train to move from column of companies to line of companies quickly and in good order, either by the left or the right.

Throughout these exercises I will look for those talented in these matters and appoint them as NCO to the various company positions.

Hopefully in this manner we should have a somewhat functional battalion by the time the game (picks up again).
Basically the organisation of the unit is what it was before (to avoid confusion among the original recruits and facilitate the training of the new arrivals) but in threefold.

When deployed three companies on line, my frontage should now be 120 men, 3 ranks deep.

With 3 companies in column, 40 men in width, 9 ranks deep, which may even allow a charge with fixed bayonets, if needed.

        Tnx.

        • Cpt Leroy had a hard decision to make for the Tigers. Take on a bunch of raw recruits and reduce his combat effectiveness or replace only those that were lost to keep the espirit de corps he has worked hard to build. He was a line infantry soldier and commander in the past and he knew what happens to green recruits on the firing line when they enter the killing zone. Only the most disciplined or most proud stayed to the end, and even they had thoughts of running to safety. It takes a miracle of effort to keep men not accustomed to the fog of war to keep firing and he respects line companies for that but he knew that wasn't what the Tigers were trained for or best at. That and he didn't want to throw away good men until none were left. Tigers dare to do the impossible to achieve victory. Thankfully, he didn't bring with him many, just enough to replace their losses.

As he came into camp with the weapons and recruits he saw a look a relief as the Tigers dreaded the inevitable. That they would become like the rest and their cohesion would go out the window with new guys swamping their ranks. They knew that they would've had to coddle the recruits like babies on how to do everything which they neither had the time nor energy. Their profession was war and they considered themselves experts at that craft and looking out for men not trained for how they fought would've made them weaker as a whole. They welcomed the new Enfield rifles and bayonets while they turned in their Mississippi muskets. All of them checked and worked their rifles, and some took the liberty of fixing the bayonets and being thankful of the extra reach but knowing there's nothing better than a blade in hand in close combat.

The recruits were dispersed to lieutenants where they filled out the 4 man teams who were missing men. The Tiger's welcomed them as brothers but would test them before they were trusted. It would take a while for the recruits to get used to their New Orleans dock and Louisiana swamp pidgin English but this seemed to have the effect of making the recruits consider the Tiger's as special and them honored to be a part of them. He hoped so as they would waste no time getting the recruits up to speed on how the Tiger's operate.

          • Lt Colonel Fawcett's return to Washington came in rather more comfortable circumstances than his departure scant weeks earlier. He and his junior officers stood out in their green-and-black frocks and butternut when they stepped off the train and made their way through a crowd of local citizens still abuzz with the news of Beauregard's recent victory. With the ex-planter's burning vision vindicated on the field, the party sweeps through the recruits with a very exacting notion of what they are after. In the end only twenty nine men make the cut, that being big strong men who are quick on their feet and possess magnificent beards (or at least the potential with sufficient care and attention).

Initial training after the recruits are divided among the squads and go through the standard grenadier training promoting rapid movement and the use of cover. When von Luntz and the Dreyse arrive, the company withdraws to the Fawcett Place for training for high intensity training throughout the morning, then rest and recreation in groups throughout the long winter afternoons. The Grenadiers enjoyed their winter, their distinctive uniform and heroic reputation brought them plenty of attention from the fairer sex although under Fawcett's stern eye they kept to the principles of chivalry. Mostly.

With the benefits of the new breechloaders, Harry is minded of some of the principles of medieval warfare, and considers means in which the arrowslit could be adopted in modern warfare.

Come the spring or the Colonel's call, the Guard will be ready to meet the foe.

                • Captain Pruitt announces a training schedule for the Legion. Five days a week they will work on Cavalry formations, three days a week there will be target practice, mounted and dismounted. They will also do weekend patrols (these men get a day off during the week). The Captain wants them in particular to hit a horse size object at twenty yards charging. Dismounted Shooting will concentrate on prone, sitting, kneeling and standing. He wants the men familiar with loading in these positions as well. During December and January the men receive limited furloughs to go home. If your home is in North Carolina you get a week to get there and then back. This also gives the men a chance to get winter clothing from their home. Excess gear will be sent home when the campaign season starts. We won't have enough room in the wagon for everyone to have tents.

Captain Pruitt tells his officers that if he has to sleep rough in the open so do they. This does cause a bit of grumbling, but the Captain leads by example. The sick lame and lazy either get a tent or get sent home if seriously ill.

                  • Captain Holden's idea of leisure time is taking out his Badgers militia on training its sharpshooting skills and working on unit cohesion in simulated combat drills. He also finds time in getting to know his men, including raw recruits coming into his command. His expectation is to turn the Badgers into a true sharpshooter unit -- the one that directs its awesome firepower at long range. Holden is determined to find ways to train his men in recognizing enemy officers and pick them off one by one.
