At this point, if the Soviets attack in strength, I'm of the mindset we're not prepared to deal with a large battalion sized counterattack supported by tanks and probably artillery. We pull back, report the rail yard was demolished, and let a larger unit than us with proper resources take on the Soviets.
In practice that would mean the larger unit moving up behind us, and advancing through our positions though, either that, or establishing a PAK front on a ridgeline somewhere behind us.

Either way the "pulling back" part in the middle of the day is not very likely imho, not for the infantry at least.

    • OOC: RL assignment in Iraq, not dissimilar to this scenario, keeps me busy.
      I'll be slow here.

      • Kolzenf has been detached (read: NPC'd) owing to RL commitments, but I've also noticed what seems to be a drop in interest as Kampfgruppe Regenbogen has lost momentum.

        Would the players prefer:

        1. We push on to completion an update at a time, taking all orders issued by the cut off.
        2. I tie off the engagement here, abstracting and summing the remainder of the skirmish based on a statement of general intent.

We've come most of the way through this, so I'm resolved to reach conclusion rather than simply letting it taper off.

        • I vote that the players push through 2 more updates, even if at a reduced rate. At that point we should know if we've cracked them or if we're going to have to withdraw.....and I can issue some general directives along with your general directives for a move to a suitable defensive position and standing by for follow on units.

          • At this point the Pz II platoon is all but combat ineffective. Sure, I can continue to support the infantry against infantry with my two remaining tanks, but taking on what appears to be a company of T34 (6+) vehicles and possibly a KV 1 or 2 or two, is an impossibility.
I managed to take out the objective, but that doesn't mean our unit can fight what appears to be a battalion +of infantry supported by more tanks that are all but invulnerable to our weapons.

            • I ws thinking it would be a great time to just pretend to be still in the fight, but instead just set fire to all the buildings we occupy and bug the hell out of there before the Stukas show.

THe only question for me is; can I salvage my BMWs.
Do I even want to, it we can replace them with 4 x 4s?

              • After each chapter I roll for recovery and replacement against each formation - the later we get in the war, the better the chances of your Aufklarugszug being refitted with armored cars but there are also times of better and worse supply and that will inform the dice roll as well.

Your BMWs are intact, but 4th Platoon has currently been pushed back behind their bikes' location.

Whatever is your preference. I like Tac's option.
